Short-term and long-term risk of mortality and neurodevelopmental impairments after bacterial meningitis during infancy in children in Denmark and the Netherlands: a nationwide matched cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have reported the long-term consequences of bacterial meningitis during infancy, and studies that have been done usually do not include a comparison cohort. We aimed to assess short-term and long-term risk of mortality, neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI), and health-care use and household income in cohorts of children with and without a history of bacterial meningitis during infancy in Denmark and the Netherlands. METHODS: In this nationwide cohort study, infants with a history of bacterial meningitis before age 1 year were identified through the Danish Medical Birth

Quorum Sensing Communication: Molecularly Connecting Cells, Their Neighbors, and Even Devices.

Quorum sensing (QS) is a molecular signaling modality that mediates molecular-based cell-cell communication. Prevalent in nature, QS networks provide bacteria with a method to gather information from the environment and make decisions based on the intel. With its ability to autonomously facilitate both inter- and intraspecies gene regulation, this process can be rewired to enable autonomously actuated, but molecularly programmed, genetic control. On the one hand, novel QS-based genetic circuits endow cells with smart functions that can be used in many fields of engineering, and on the other, r

Single-plex quantitative assays for the detection and quantification of most pneumococcal serotypes.

Streptococcus pneumoniae globally kills more children than any other infectious disease every year. A prerequisite for pneumococcal disease and transmission is colonization of the nasopharynx. While the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines has reduced the burden of pneumococcal disease, understanding the impact of vaccination on nasopharyngeal colonization has been hampered by the lack of sensitive quantitative methods for the detection of >90 known S. pneumoniae serotypes. In this work, we developed 27 new quantitative (q)PCR reactions and optimized 26 for a total of 53 qPCR reacti…

Quorum-sensing regulators in Gram-positive bacteria: 'cherchez le peptide'.

Gram-positive bacteria can regulate gene expression at the population level via a mechanism known as quorum sensing. Oligopeptides serve as the signaling molecules; they are secreted and then are either detected at the bacterial surface by two-component systems or reinternalized via an oligopeptide transport system. In the latter case, imported peptides interact with cognate regulators (phosphatases or transcriptional regulators) that modulate the expression of target genes. These regulators help control crucial functions such as virulence, persistence, conjugation and competence and have been

Antipneumococcal activity of ertapenem (MK-0826) compared to those of other agents.

The activities of ertapenem (MK-0826) and eight other agents against a range of penicillin-susceptible and -resistant pneumococci were tested by determination of MICs by the microdilution method and by the time-kill methodology. For 125 penicillin-susceptible, 74 penicillin-intermediate, and 86 penicillin-resistant pneumococci, the MICs at which 50% of isolates are inhibited (MIC(50)s) and MIC(90)s, as determined by the microdilution method, were as follows: for ertapenem, 0.016 and 0.03, 0.125 and 0.5, and 0.5 and 1.0 microg/ml for penicillin-susceptible, penicillin-intermediate, and penicill

Right-sided diaphragmatic hernia following group B streptococcal pneumonia and sepsis.

A case of right-sided diaphragmatic hernia following group B streptococcal pneumonia and sepsis is reported herein. The clinical course was characteristic. The position of the right hemidiaphragm was initially normal. After an antecedent group B streptococcal infection, an abnormal shadow indicating either pneumonia or a pleural effusion on the chest x-ray was recognized and an elevation of the bowel and liver into the right hemithorax gradually appeared. Repair of the hernia was indicated and the postoperative result was excellent. The relationship between a delayed-onset diaphragmatic hernia

Lacrimal conjunctivitis.

In the course of an acute phase of pneumococcal conjunctivitis, a serpiginous corneal ulcer has never been reported to develop. However, if there is a pneumococcal chronic dacryocystitis and a resultant lacrimal conjunctivitis, the association with pneumococcal serpiginous ulcers is significant. This is most likely due to the fact that those serological types that are particularly virulent for the cornea have an affinity to colonize and infect the lacrimal sac.

Pharmacokinetics and bacteriological efficacies of apalcillin and cefpiramide in experimental pneumococcal meningitis.

Rabbits with experimentally induced pneumococcal meningitis were given single 25-mg/kg doses of apalcillin or cefpiramide. Mean percentages of the drug concentration in cerebrospinal fluid versus that in blood serum were 7.6% with apalcillin and 3.9% with cefpiramide. Bactericidal activity in cerebrospinal fluid resulted in mean reductions of from 4 to 5 log10 CFU/ml, and cerebrospinal fluid cultures became sterile for four of six animals treated with each drug.

SARS-CoV-2-related pneumonia cases in pneumonia picture in Russia in March-May 2020: Secondary bacterial pneumonia and viral co-infections.

BACKGROUND: We are communicating the results of investigating statistics on SARS-CoV-2-related pneumonias in Russia: percentage, mortality, … 433 COVID-19 patients (35.96%) were tested positive for various bacterial aetiological agents, with Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and Haemophilus influenzae infections accounting for the majority of secondary pneumonia cases. CONCLUSIONS: SARS-CoV-2, a low-pathogenic virus itself, becomes exceptionally dangerous if secondary bacterial pneumonia attacks …

Biochemical characterization of actinomycete from Namibia rocky crest mountainous soil and analyzing their bioactive metabolites for antagonistic effect against human respiratory pathogens.

INTRODUCTION: the present study aimed at isolating and characterizing actinomycete from unexplored Windhoek rocky crest mountainous soil and extracting bioactive metabolites as possible therapeutics against common life-threatening Streptococcus pneumonia (S. pneumonia) and Stachybotrys chartarum (S. chartarum). METHODS: chemotaxonomy and biochemical methods were used to identify the isolates. The solvent extraction method was used to extract bioactive compounds. Agar overlay and disc diffusion methods were used to determine the antimicrobial activity of isolates and extracted bioactive metabo

Improved sensitivity of the skin pathergy test with polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine antigens in the diagnosis of Behçet disease.

OBJECTIVE: The skin pathergy test (SPT) is an important tool in the diagnosis of Behçet disease (BD), but its decreasing sensitivity over years has resulted in less frequent use in the clinical practice. This study aimed to improve the sensitivity of the SPT without compromising its specificity. METHODS: BD patients, patients with other inflammatory diseases, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, and healthy controls comprised the study group. The SPT was conducted using 20G needle and 21G lancet pricks, or with additional application of 23-valent polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine (PS-23), Alum, o
