A survey of diseases of working farm dogs in New Zealand.

AIMS: To record the incidence of specific diseases affecting working farm dogs; identify any apparent breed predispositions; determine the most important causes of loss from death, euthanasia, or retirement of the dog; and identify potential interventions that could reduce the incidence of disease. METHODS: A national questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted to identify the incidence of specific diseases, and circumstances of trauma affecting working farm dogs that presented to rural veterinary practices over a 12-month period, between April 2008 and April 2009. The practices w

The "ulnar fovea sign" for defining ulnar wrist pain: an analysis of sensitivity and specificity.

PURPOSE: Eliciting tenderness in the region of the ulnar fovea is a possibly useful clinical test for defining the source of ulnar-sided wrist pain. Until now, no reports of the clinical sensitivity and specificity of this test have been available. Based on anecdotal observations, a hypothesis was developed stating that ulnar fovea tenderness (positive "ulnar fovea sign") is sensitive and specific in detecting two ulnar-sided wrist conditions: foveal disruption of the distal radioulnar ligaments and ulnotriquetral (UT) ligament injuries. METHODS: The clinical records of 272 consecutive patien

[Pigmentation change, muscle wasting, and tendon rupture after corticosteroid injection in the Congo].

Unlike complications of systemic corticosteroid therapy that have been extensively described, complications of locoregional corticosteroid injection are not well documented. The purpose of this report is to describe a case involving iatrogenic injury due to local corticosteroid therapy in a 17-year-old woman. Following injection of triamicinolone into the wrist, the patient developed pigmentation change, muscle wasting, and tendon rupture. Injection was performed by a nurse, thus indicating the need for training before delegating this procedure in areas with limited resources.

Acute calcific prevertebral tendinitis.

Acute calcific prevertebral tendinitis, also known as retropharyngeal calcific tendinitis and longus colli tendinitis, is an uncommon benign condition presenting as acute neck pain.Typical characteristics of this entity are calcifications at the superior insertion of the longus colli tendons at C1-C2 level and a fluid collection in the retropharyngeal space. Differential diagnosis consists of retropharyngeal abscess, traumatic injury or infectious spondylitis. Knowledge of the clinical and imaging findings can prevent misdiagnosis with inappropriate attempts at surgical drainage.

Screw fixation of a 4 1/2-year-old PCL avulsion injury.

We report about the case of a 4(1/2)-year delayed screw fixation of a tibial posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) avulsion fracture in combination with a posterolateral stabilization. After open reduction and rigid screw fixation, combined with a posterolateral stabilization using a semitendinosus tendon autograft, the patient returned to full activity in sports and daily life. If the PCL substance is sufficient, a delayed refixation in an old PCL avulsion injury seems to be a viable alternative to PCL reconstruction.

Restoration of opposition of the thumb.

During the period 1966--75 operation to restore thumb opposition was performed in thirty four patients. Out of twenty seven patients who could be traced, twenty one had obtained a satisfactory result, five had considerably improved, while one had to be classified as a failure. Complications from the operation and the motor tendon are discussed. Among 147 cases with injury to the median nerve treated during the same period, operation to obtain opposition was indicated in 14%.

Comparison of mini-open repair system and percutaneous repair for acute Achilles tendon rupture.

BACKGROUND: To reduce incision complications, minimally invasive operative approaches for treatment with acute Achilles tendon rupture have been developed, such as Mini-open repair and percutaneous repair. Which technique is the better surgical option? In the present study, we compared the two surgical procedures- modified Mini-open repair versus percutaneous repair-in the treatment of acute Achilles tendon rupture. METHODS: From January 2016 to November 2018, 68 matched patients with acute Achilles tendon rupture were divided into treatment group (Mini-open with modified Ma-Griffith techniqu

Outcomes of the Mini-Open Technique for Achilles Tendon Repair: An Updated Systematic Review.

There is much debate regarding the optimal treatment for acute Achilles tendon rupture. Surgical repair consists of open repair, percutaneous repair, and mini-open repair. The purpose of this review is to evaluate studies reporting outcomes after mini-open Achilles tendon repair (ATR) through evaluation of return to activity (RTA), complication rates, and postoperative patient-reported outcomes (PROs). A systematic review search following the guidelines established by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses was performed in three databases for studies including m

Arthroscopic Superior Capsular Reconstruction With Knotless Double-Row Dermal Allograft and Margin Convergence Augmentation.

BACKGROUND: Superior capsular reconstruction (SCR) is an effective treatment option for rotator cuff injury. A variety of techniques and grafts can be used, and no clear method of graft fixation has been established. INDICATIONS: SCR is indicated for the treatment of irreparable rotator cuff tears refractory to conservative measures, as was observed in this 58-year-old male patient. This procedure reduces superior translation of the humeral head and strengthens the superior capsule of the shoulder. TECHNIQUE DESCRIPTION: The patient was positioned in the beach-chair position. Three knotless

Distribution of normal and abnormal fluid collections in the glenohumeral joint: implications for MR arthrography.

Although magnetic resonance (MR) images of the glenohumeral joint frequently demonstrate intraarticular fluid, no specific criteria have, to the authors' knowledge, been published that allow accurate assessment of the amount of fluid present. Also, despite the increasing use of MR arthrography of the shoulder, the optimal amount of intraarticular fluid that should be used with this technique has not been determined. The authors progressively distended the glenohumeral joint in six cadaveric shoulder specimens with a dilute gadopentetate dimeglumine solution and obtained MR images after injecti

Polydeoxyribonucleotide improves scar healing following limited scar resection for chronic Achilles tendon rupture in a rat model.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Achilles tendon rupture (CATR) results from delayed diagnosis or treatment, leading to retracted tendon ends filled with biomechanically inferior scar tissue. Limited scar resection (LSR) offers a less invasive surgical option by preserving and repairing scar tissue between tendon stumps, but the quality of healing remains suboptimal. Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) has demonstrated pro-healing properties in tendon disorders, yet its effects on scar remodeling after LSR are unknown. METHODS: Chronic Achilles tendon rupture was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats by full-thi

Flexor Carpi Radialis Tendon Rupture from Scapho-Trapezio-Trapezoid Osteoarthritis: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Subcutaneous rupture of the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) tendon from scapho-trapezio-trapezoid (STT) osteoarthritis is a rarely reported and diagnosed condition. A 65-year-old female presented in the clinic with wrist pain aggravated with movement. On physical examination, there was a 2-cm soft elastic mass at the radial side of the volar wrist. There was no tenderness, but pain was elicited with range of motion. Computed tomography confirmed an osteoarthritic STT with large spurs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed impingement on the tract of the FCR associated with synovitis. Complete ru

Comparison of Suture Types and Techniques in Achilles Tendon Repair: An Ex Vivo Biomechanical Animal Experiment.

BACKGROUND: The ideal suture technique and type in tendon repair remain unclear. This biomechanical study aimed to assess the biomechanical characteristics of three techniques-modified Kessler (mKE), modified Krackow (mKR), and modified tension Bunnell (mtBU)-in sheep Achilles tendon tear repair using three suture types-polypropylene, polyester, and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)-which are also compared. METHODS: Sixty-three Achilles tendons harvested from sheep were transversely hacked as a replacement for rupture in a standardized measure and repaired using mKE, mKR, and

Audit of a Revised Pathway Aimed at Expediting Diagnosis and Treatment for Suspected Achilles Tendon Rupture.

Treatment outcomes for Achilles tendon ruptures depend upon prompt diagnosis and management. A local study in 2018 highlighted inefficiencies in patient management, and a revised protocol was introduced allowing investigation and referral to be initiated by other healthcare professionals. This retrospective audit evaluates the impact of this on the timescale from presentation to treatment. It analyzes all suspected Achilles tendon ruptures within one District General Hospital from April 2021 to March 2022. Data regarding patient timelines was compared to the 2018 study. Over 12 months, 99 pati

Hyperuricemia May Increase Risk of Achilles Tendon Rupture: A Case Control Study.

It has been demonstrated in a number of studies that high levels of uric acid can cause crystal deposition in the tendons of the lower extremities, which in turn can impair the Achilles tendon. This study aimed to interpret whether hyperuricemia is relevant with Achilles tendon rupture. Patients diagnosed with Achilles tendon rupture at the same institution between 2013 and 2022 were included in the case group. Healthy subjects who had physical examinations during the same period were included in the control group. Propensity score matching was used to match in a 1:1 ratio. Demographic and cli
