Development of multi-ARMS-qPCR method for detection of hookworms from cats and dogs.

Hookworms are blood-sucking nematodes that infect dogs, cats, and humans, causing iron-deficiency anemia, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and skin inflammation. Amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS) is a modified technology based on allele-specific PCR, which is widely used in mutation detection and genotyping. However, no data about ARMS application in hookworm detection. This study aims to establish a multi-ARMS-qPCR method for the detection of three hookworm species from dogs and cats. A universal forward primer and three specific primers (ARMS-Cey, ARMS-Can, and ARMS-Tub) were designed

Age-related differences in olfactory cleft volume in adults: A computational volumetric study.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: There is a growing need to understand the underlying mechanisms of age-related olfactory dysfunction with the increasing proportion of older adults over the next 20 years. Despite the importance of olfactory cleft (OC) volumes on odorant deposition and olfactory function, little is known about age-related changes to OC volume. The goal of this study was to use automated techniques in a cross-sectional design to investigate the extent to which OC volumes vary with age and determine the spatial specificity of any age-related effects. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sect

Effects of a skill demonstration video delivered by smartphone on facilitating nursing students' skill competencies and self-confidence: A randomized controlled trial study.

BACKGROUND: The correct and appropriate performance of nursing skills by students can ensure patient safety and care quality. However, developing appropriate teaching and learning strategies to enhance nursing students' nursing skills and knowledge are challenging tasks for nursing faculty members. Nowadays, smartphones are popular mobile devices that are used on campuses by students and could be considered a potential tool to deliver learning materials to nursing students. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the effects of a skill demonstration video delivered by smartphone on facilitati

Machine learning for detecting moyamoya disease in plain skull radiography using a convolutional neural network.

BACKGROUND: Recently, innovative attempts have been made to identify moyamoya disease (MMD) by focusing on the morphological differences in the head of MMD patients. Following the recent revolution in the development of deep learning (DL) algorithms, we designed this study to determine whether DL can distinguish MMD in plain skull radiograph images. METHODS: Three hundred forty-five skull images were collected as an MMD-labeled dataset from patients aged 18 to 50 years with definite MMD. As a control-labeled data set, 408 skull images of trauma patients were selected by age and sex matching.

Village-Integrated Eye Worker trial (VIEW): rationale and design of a cluster-randomised trial to prevent corneal ulcers in resource-limited settings.

INTRODUCTION: Corneal opacity is a leading cause of blindness worldwide. In resource-limited settings, untreated traumatic corneal abrasions may result in infection and ultimately, opacity. Although antimicrobial treatment of corneal ulcers may successfully cure infections, the scarring that accompanies the resolution of infection can still result in visual impairment. Prevention may be the optimal approach for reducing corneal blindness. Studies have employed community health workers to provide prompt administration of antimicrobials after corneal abrasions to prevent infections, but these st

The Value of a Second Opinion for Breast Cancer Patients Referred to a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Cancer Center with a Multidisciplinary Breast Tumor Board.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the changes in diagnosis after a second opinion for breast cancer patients from a multi-disciplinary tumor board (MTB) review at an National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center. METHODS: A retrospective study analyzed patients with a breast cancer diagnosed at an outside institution who presented for a second opinion from August 2015 to March 2016 at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Radiology, pathology, and genetic testing reports from outside institutions were compared with reports generated after an MTB review and subs

Medial Tibial Periprosthetic Bone Resorption and Its Effect on Clinical Outcomes After Total Knee Arthroplasty: Cobalt-Chromium vs Titanium Implants.

BACKGROUND: Recently, concerns arose over the medial tibial bone resorption of a novel cobalt-chromium implant. This study aimed at investigating the effects of tibial component material, design, and patient factors on periprosthetic bone resorption and at determining its association with clinical outcomes after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). METHODS: A total of 462 primary TKAs using 5 types of implants were included. To evaluate tibial periprosthetic bone resorption, we assessed radiolucent lines and change in bone mineral density at the medial tibial condyle (BMDMT). Factors related to bon

Untangling the Complexity of Liver Fluke Infection and Cholangiocarcinoma in NE Thailand Through Transdisciplinary Learning.

This study demonstrates how a transdisciplinary learning approach provided new insights for explaining persistent Opisthorchis viverrini infection in northern Thailand, as well as elucidating problems of focusing solely on the parasite as a means of addressing high prevalence of cholangiocarcinoma. Researchers from diverse backgrounds collaborated to design an investigative homestay program for 72 Singaporean and Thai university students in five northeast Thai villages. The students explored how liver fluke infection and potential cholangiocarcinoma development are influenced by local landscap

Developing and successfully implementing a competency-based portfolio assessment system in a postgraduate family medicine residency program.

The use of portfolios in postgraduate medical residency education to support competency development is increasing; however, the processes by which these assessment systems are designed, implemented, and maintained are emergent. The authors describe the needs assessment, development, implementation, and continuing quality improvement processes that have shaped the Portfolio Assessment Support System (PASS) used by the postgraduate family medicine program at Queen's University since 2009. Their description includes the impetus for change and contextual realities that guided the effort, plus the

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: This study examined correlations between surgical recommendations based on either drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) or common awake examination methods in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, blinded, clinical trial at a university hospital. METHODS: An otorhinolaryngologist designed surgical plans for patients with OSAS after clinical examination, lateral cephalometry, the Müller maneuver, and Friedman staging. Independent learning modules enhance student performance and understanding of anatomy.

Didactic lessons are only one part of the multimodal teaching strategies used in gross anatomy courses today. Increased emphasis is placed on providing more opportunities for students to develop lifelong learning and critical thinking skills during medical training. In a pilot program designed to promote more engaged and independent learning in anatomy, self-study modules were introduced to supplement human gross anatomy instruction at Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University. Modules use three-dimensional constructs to help students understand complex anatomical regions. Reso
