OBJECTIVES: To analyze the urinary repercussions in patients with lipomyelomeningocele.
METHODS: From 1976 to 1993, 20 patients (11 males and 9 females), aged 12-17 years had been referred to our department. All patients were evaluated clinically and analytically, urodynamically and by imaging techniques (cystography, US or IVP).

One hundred patients over age 60 who had lower urinary tract symptoms were evaluated in detail. The five primary diagnoses were urethral syndrome (29%), genuine stress incontinence (21%), unstable bladder (19%), hypoestrogenism (7%), and pelvic relaxation (6%). Displacement of the bladder outside of the pelvis by way of the inguinal canal represents an infrequent presentation of an inguinal hernia that rarely causes urinary tract obstruction. OBJECTIVES: To verify if nerve and seminal sparing radical prostatectomy could represent surgical solution for iatrogenic bladder neck prostatic urethra contracture without external sphincter involvement.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate incidence, characteristics and consequences of urinary and intestinal tract injuries during vaginal hysterectomy for benign conditions.
STUDY DESIGN: From January 1970 to December 1996, 3076 vaginal hysterectomies with or without additional procedures, were performed for benign conditions in our department. We retrospectively analyzed operative injury cases.
RESULTS: Incidence of urinary and intestinal tract injuries were 1.7 and 0.5%, respectively. Concerning urinary tract injuries, we observed only one ureteral lesion, all others being bladder lacerations (54 cases).

A subset of patients receiving radiation therapy for pelvic cancer develop radiation cystitis, a complication characterized by mucosal cell death, inflammation, hematuria, and bladder fibrosis. We report a case of a fused phallus located within the urinary bladder in a child with cloacal exstrophy. Surgical exploration revealed a phallus formed by fusion of the left and right corpus cavernosum and completely covered by bladder urothelium. The painful bladder syndrome (PBS) is a progressive and painful disease of the bladder that may lead to fibrosis, contracture and reduction of bladder capacity. The usual symptoms are urinary urgency, frequency, nocturia, chronic pelvic pain and lower abdominal pain upon filling of the bladder. A retrospective analysis was performed on 21 women with PBS between March 1987 and March 1988. The clinical and urodynamic findings in 1,193 consecutive women referred for investigation of urinary incontinence and other urinary symptoms were reviewed.
