BACKGROUND: Pterodon emarginatus is a tree of the Brazilian Savannah. The beans of this tree are used in folk medicine as anti-inflammatory preparations, especially for infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus. These bacteria can cause simple infections or serious illnesses such as pneumonia, meningitis, endocarditis, toxic shock syndrome, septicemia, and others.
OBJECTIVE: This study had the goal of verifying the effect of the essential oil (OE) from P. emarginatus on the inhibition of S. aureus in culture medium, i.e., " in vitro" tests.

Osteopetrotic mice lacking functional M-CSF recover with ageing, suggesting alternate osteoclastogenesis pathways exist. One alternative is GM-CSF, treatment with which improves the osteopetrosis. This manuscript summarizes our experience with recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) with high-dose Cytoxan, carmustine and etoposide (CBV in Hodgkin's disease). rhG-CSF regularly shortened the neutropenic phase following autologous bone marrow transplantation. Treatment with GM-CSF or G-CSF is becoming widely used in patients with chronic neutropenia, or who are aplastic following chemotherapy or autologous or allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. Recently, some authors have described a phenomenon analogous to cyclic agranulocytosis following treatment with G-CSF in a patient with chronic neutropenia. Fish tank granuloma has traditionally been associated with Mycobacterium marinum. We report the case of a 54 old-year woman that worked in a freshwater fish pet store and developed a skin ulcer in a hand finger with a suppurative granuloma secondary to Microbacterium paraoxydans. This is a bacterial fish pathogen, rarely observed in human infections. Identification was performed by colony morphology and MALDI-TOF. She evolved satisfactorily after receiving a sequential treatment with beta-lactams and linezolid. To our knowledge, it is the first known description of this type.

Singapore surrendered to the Japanese invasion in February 1942 after its water supply collapsed. At the suggestion of the colonial medical authorities, an emergency typhoid immunisation campaign was then begun using locally manufactured vaccine from extemporary materials; within 3 months, >600 000 had been immunised. Comparison with prewar statistics suggests that a postsurrender typhoid fever epidemic was prevented despite an increase in other enteric infections. Public health crises with disrupted supply chains may make locally manufactured vaccines of increasing importance in the future.

Listeria monocytogenes is a model intracellular pathogen that can invade the cytoplasm of host mammalian cells. We prepared a newer growth medium, banana peel extract agar (BPEA) containing the extracts of chopped banana peels for the selective cultivation of Cryptococcus neoformans. Over the medium, the growth resulted in the development of light to the dark brown coloured colonies indicating the chromogenic potential of the BPEA.
