BACKGROUND: In multiple endocrine neoplasia type I and renal failure, the type of initial parathyroidectomy for hyperparathyroidism may influence the operative risks and development of recurrence. We compared subtotal parathyroidectomy with total parathyroidectomy and immediate forearm autotransplantation (TPFA) in a large series with long-term follow-up.
METHODS: The data of patients treated from 1977 to 2009 by initial or reoperative TPFA or subtotal parathyroidectomy were examined for outcomes including the interval to sites and tissue patterns of recurrence.

In the course of producing the 2009 NHS Evidence--skin disorders Annual Evidence Update on Acne Vulgaris, 25 randomised controlled trials were examined. We attempt to disentangle the effect on alcohol-related accidents and fatal crashes when New Mexico lifted its ban on Sunday packaged alcohol sales on July 1, 1995. Using crash incidents between January 1990 and December 2005, from data maintained by the Division of Government Research in New Mexico, we estimate a negative binomial model that controls for unobservable factors affecting overall accidents. METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis of 399 children aged 3 to 48 months who were referred to a child advocacy center at an academic medical center. The lifetime prevalence of duodenal ulcer in the United States is 8 to 10%, whereas another 1% of the population is affected by gastric ulcer. Both central and peripheral dopamine pathways may influence ulcer pathogenesis. Dopamine agonists prevent whereas antagonists augment stress- and chemically induced gastrointestinal ulcers in preclinical models. The dopaminergic neurotoxin 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,36-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) depletes central dopamine and induces lesions in the substantia nigra, and, if given in high doses, MPTP induces a Parkinson disease-like syndrome and gastric ulcers.
