The increased risk of developing lung diseases in cigarette smokers has been well recognized. The association between smoking and the risk of developing pulmonary infections in HIV-1-infected patients, however, which has not been established, was evaluated in the present study. Twenty-seven cases with lower respiratory infections (15 Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), 12 TB cases) were compared with 27 age, gender, socio-economic and HIV status-matched patients, without history of respiratory diseases. Medical history and physical examinations were obtained every 6 months. Blood was drawn f

There have been significant increases in growth and development of commercial broilers, turkeys, and ducks. The large decline in days to market and disproportional increases in breast yield have contributed to greater incidences of various skeletal anomalies. Across all three species, tibial dyschondroplasia is observed about half-way through the growing period (50%), but in each case the birds have achieved 40% or less of their final BW. Relative tibia development (length and width) is significantly slower in broilers compared with turkeys and ducks, which suggests a greater susceptibility to

The evaluation of 28- and 90-day repeated-dose toxicity studies in rodents is typically performed at the highest tier of regulatory toxicology. Despite detailed guidance from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the practical implementation and evaluation of these studies remain challenging and may lead to variability across assessments. In risk assessment of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) intended for import into the European Union, these studies primarily provide information for evidence of adverse effects. A seri

The high prevalence of dental caries and periodontal disease place a significant burden on society, both socially and economically. Recent advances in genomic technologies have linked both diseases to shifts in the oral microbiota - a community of >700 bacterial species that live within the mouth. The development of oral microbiome transplantation draws on the success of fecal microbiome transplantation for the treatment of gut pathologies associated with disease. Many current in vitro oral biofilm models have been developed but do not fully capture the complexity of the oral microbiome which

An unprecedented global health crisis has developed due to the emergence of the mysterious coronavirus-2 of the severe acute respiratory syndrome, which has resulted in millions of deaths around the globe, as no therapy could control the 'cytokine storm'. Consequently, many vaccines have been developed and several others are being developed for this infection. Although most of the approved vaccines have been highly effective, many developing, and economically poor countries are still deprived of vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 due to the unequal distribution of vaccines worldwide. Furthermore,

People with dementia (PwD) face cognitive decline, placing added stress on family caregivers. Challenging behaviour, such as agitation, is one of the prominent behaviours exhibited by PwD, and family caregivers are often faced with the challenge of finding an appropriate intervention strategy to cope with it. To address this problem, current research focuses on developing digital solutions for the support of unprofessional caregivers, allowing them to ease the stress factor while dealing with agitation. A major challenge in any digital solution is the required domain knowledge. This knowledge

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Brucellosis is a globally significant zoonotic disease that causes reproductive failure in animals and chronic infection in humans, resulting in substantial economic and public health burdens. The pathogenicity of Brucella species is largely mediated by virulence determinants such as the type IV secretion system and lipopolysaccharide biosynthetic machinery. Despite extensive studies on individual components, a comparative and integrative understanding of conserved virulence factors across major Brucella species remains limited. This study aimed to perform a comprehensive i

UNLABELLED: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of vision loss in the working-age population, with public health economic implications worldwide. Systemic inflammation and leukocyte activation are early events in diabetes, whereas microglial activation, neuroinflammation, and retinal neurodegeneration are early events in DR. Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) plays a complex role in monocyte and macrophage activation, which may affect DR. We investigated the role of myeloid cell-specific PTP1B using LysMcre-PTP1B fl/fl (LysM-PTP1B) transgenic mice, as well as pharmacological in

Small hive beetles, Aethina tumide, are free-flying parasites of social bee colonies where they feed and reproduce. In case of mass infestation, A. tumida can cause significant economic losses. There is an urgent need to explore novel green molecular approaches for sustainable control of A. tumida. It has been confirmed that juvenile hormone acid methyl transferase (JHAMT) plays a crucial role in regulating the synthesis of juvenile hormone (JH). However, its impact on female reproduction of A. tumida remains unclear. In the present study, a novel JHAMT gene was identified from A. tumida with

BACKGROUND: Reproductive efficiency is crucial for the long-term economic sustainability of beef cattle production. Pregnancy loss and stillbirth are complex reproductive traits that do not yet have their genomic background fully understood, especially in zebu breeds (Bos taurus indicus). Hence, this study aimed to perform a genome-wide association study (GWAS) and functional annotation for conception success (CS), pregnancy loss (PL), stillbirth (SB), and pre-weaning calf mortality (PWM) in Nellore cattle. In this study, 3,728 cows with 17,094 reproductive records and 11,785 calves were evalu

BACKGROUND: Carceral settings are a key focus of the 2030 WHO global hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination goals. Despite this, access to HCV testing and treatment services in prisons remains low globally, limiting opportunities to achieve these goals. Advocacy efforts are needed to address service inequities and mobilise support for enhanced HCV programs in prisons globally. INHSU Prisons, a special interest group of the International Network on Health and Hepatitis in Substance Users (INHSU) is developing a Prisons HCV Advocacy Toolkit to address this need. Here we present findings of a mixed

The use of specific drugs (e.g. methamphetamine, GHB/GBL and other stimulants) to enhance sex among men who have sex with men (MSM), is the focus of global public health concern because of links to social harms, poor mental and sexual health. Often called 'chemsex' in Western settings or 'hi-fun' in Southeast Asia, this type of sexualised drug use is increasingly visible in Thailand where the unique sociocultural and legislative environments shape sexual cultures and harms. This study aimed to develop an understanding of key informants' perspectives on hi-fun contexts, harms and current respon

In Asia, there are an estimated 12 million annual cases of enteric fever, a potentially fatal systemic bacterial infection caused by Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi (STy) and Paratyphi A (SPA). The recent availability of typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCV), an increasing incidence of disease caused by SPA and growing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) across the genus Salmonella makes a bivalent STy/SPA vaccine a useful public health proposition. The uptake of a stand-alone paratyphoid vaccine is likely low thus, there is a pipeline of bivalent STy/SPA candidate vaccines. Several candidates are cl

BACKGROUND: Peripheral vascular diseases have a significant impact on functional quality of life. Previous research has demonstrated the complex, limiting and costly economic implications of these conditions such as lower limb ulceration chronicity and ischaemic amputation. These complex, limb and life threatening conditions demand the development of novel interventions with objective research as part of that development. Hence, a novel intermittent negative pressure medical device in the form of a wearable boot (FlowOx™) was developed. As part of the development process, this study aimed to e

Modern broiler chickens are associated with rapid growth rates and superior feed efficiency. However, they are also susceptible to physiological and metabolic disorders (e.g., skin lesions, lameness, sudden death, enteric diseases, myopathies) that exert substantial economic losses to producers. This is further exacerbated by consumer pressure and mandated cessation of production practices such as indiscriminate use of antimicrobial growth promoters. Manipulation of broiler breeder (BB) nutrition and management can influence chick quality, robustness, and resilience to stressors in the product

The hemagglutinin (HA) surface protein is the primary immune target for most influenza vaccines. The neuraminidase (NA) surface protein is often a secondary target for vaccine designs. In this study, computationally optimized broadly reactive antigen (COBRA) methodology was used to generate the N1-I NA vaccine antigen that was designed to cross-react with avian, swine, and human influenza viruses of the N1 NA subtype. The elicited antibodies bound to NA proteins derived from A/California/07/2009 (H1N1)pdm09, A/Brisbane/59/2007 (H1N1), A/Swine/North Carolina/154074/2015 (H1N1), and A/Viet Nam/1

BACKGROUND: The mosquitoes Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus are the primary vectors of dengue virus, and their geographic distributions are predicted to expand further with economic development, and in response to climate change. We aimed to estimate the impact of future climate change on dengue transmission through the development of a Suitable Conditions Index (SCI), based on climatic variables known to support vectorial capacity. We calculated the SCI based on various climate change scenarios for six countries in the Asia-Pacific region (Australia, China, Indonesia, The Philippines, Thailan…

BACKGROUND: Diarrhoeal infections are one of the leading causes of child's mortality and morbidity. Vaccines against Shigella, enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), norovirus and invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella are in clinical development, however, their full value in terms of short and long-term health and socio-economic burden needs to be evaluated and communicated, to rationalise investment in vaccine development, and deployment. While estimates of mortality of enteric infections exist, the long-term morbidity estimates are scarce and have not been systematically collected.
