Unrestricted eye movements strengthen effective connectivity from hippocampal to oculomotor regions during scene construction.

Scene construction is a key component of memory recall, navigation, and future imagining, and relies on the medial temporal lobes (MTL). A parallel body of work suggests that eye movements may enable the imagination and construction of scenes, even in the absence of external visual input. There are vast structural and functional connections between regions of the MTL and those of the oculomotor system. However, the directionality of connections between the MTL and oculomotor control regions, and how it relates to scene construction, has not been studied directly in human neuroimaging. In the c

Neural Mechanisms of Motor Dysfunction in Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Despite the prevalence of motor symptoms in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), their underlying neural mechanisms have not been thoroughly studied. OBJECTIVE: This review summarizes the neural underpinnings of motor deficits in MCI and AD. METHODS: We searched PubMed up until August of 2021 and identified 37 articles on neuroimaging of motor function in MCI and AD. Study bias was evaluated based on sample size, availability of control samples, and definition of the study population in terms of diagnosis. RESULTS: The majority of studies investigated ga

Effects of remifentanil on brain responses to noxious stimuli during deep propofol sedation.

BACKGROUND: The safety of anaesthesia has improved as a result of better control of anaesthetic depth. However, conventional monitoring does not inform on the nature of nociceptive processes during unconsciousness. A means of inferring the quality of potentially painful experiences could derive from analysis of brain activity using neuroimaging. We have evaluated the dose effects of remifentanil on brain response to noxious stimuli during deep sedation and spontaneous breathing. METHODS: Optimal data were obtained in 26 healthy subjects. Pressure stimulation that proved to be moderately painf

Essential Topics About the Imaging Diagnosis and Treatment of Hemorrhagic Stroke: A Comprehensive Review of the 2022 AHA Guidelines.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a severe stroke with a high death rate (40% mortality). The prevalence of hemorrhagic stroke has increased globally, with changes in the underlying cause over time as anticoagulant use and hypertension treatment have improved. The fundamental etiology of ICH and the mechanisms of harm from ICH, particularly the complex interaction between edema, inflammation, and blood product toxicity, have been thoroughly revised by the American Heart Association (AHA) in 2022. Although numerous trials have investigated the best medicinal and surgical management of ICH, ther

Multivariate morphometry statistics reveal the morphological change pattern of hippocampus during normal aging.

There have been numerous studies focusing on normal aging in previous decades which is accompanied by the structural and functional decline in the hippocampus, while the pattern of hippocampal alteration with age remains unclear. Figuring out the mechanism of hippocampal changes precisely is beneficial for a better understanding of the aging process. In this study, we included a total of 451 T1 MRI scans of subjects of age 50-90 who were labeled as normal in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. Taking 10 years of age as an age band, we divided the subjects into four groups (denoted

Future trends in brain aging research: Visuo-cognitive functions at stake during mobility and spatial navigation.

Aging leads to a complex pattern of structural and functional changes, gradually affecting sensorimotor, perceptual, and cognitive processes. These multiscale changes can hinder older adults' interaction with their environment, progressively reducing their autonomy in performing tasks relevant to everyday life. Autonomy loss can further be aggravated by the onset and progression of neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., age-related macular degeneration at the sensory input level; and Alzheimer's disease at the cognitive level). In this context, spatial cognition offers a representative case of hig

Exploring Motor Neuron Diseases Using iPSC Platforms.

The degeneration of motor neurons is a pathological hallmark of motor neuron diseases (MNDs), but emerging evidence suggests that neuronal vulnerability extends well beyond this cell subtype. The ability to assess motor function in the clinic is limited to physical examination, electrophysiological measures, and tissue-based or neuroimaging techniques which lack the resolution to accurately assess neuronal dysfunction as the disease progresses. Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA), hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

Sacral Neuromodulation Improves Abnormal Prefrontal Brain Activity in Patients with Overactive Bladder: A Possible Central Mechanism.

PURPOSE: We explored the central pathogenesis of overactive bladder (OAB) and the central mechanism of action of sacral neuromodulation (SNM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively enrolled patients with OAB who chose SNM and healthy controls (HCs). At baseline, all subjects completed a 72-hour voiding diary, OAB symptom score and prefrontal cortex functional near-infrared spectroscopy scan synchronous urodynamic monitoring. All OAB patients were tested after implantation of the SNM electrode, and both success and failure groups were reevaluated. NIRS_KIT software was used to analyze prefro

Research on Voxel-Based Features Detection and Analysis of Alzheimer's Disease Using Random Survey Support Vector Machine.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a degenerative disease of the central nervous system characterized by memory and cognitive dysfunction, as well as abnormal changes in behavior and personality. The research focused on how machine learning classified AD became a recent hotspot. In this study, we proposed a novel voxel-based feature detection framework for AD. Specifically, using 649 voxel-based morphometry (VBM) methods obtained from MRI in Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), we proposed a feature detection method according to the Random Survey Support Vector Machines (RS-SVM) and co

EEG correlates of developmental dyslexia: a systematic review.

Dyslexia is one of the most studied learning disorders. Despite this, its biological basis and main causes are still not fully understood. Electroencephalography (EEG) could be a powerful tool in identifying the underlying mechanisms, but knowledge of the EEG correlates of developmental dyslexia (DD) remains elusive. We aimed to systematically review the evidence on EEG correlates of DD and establish their quality. In July 2021, we carried out an online search of the PubMed and Scopus databases to identify published articles on EEG correlates in children with dyslexia aged 6 to 12 years withou

Tinnitus Perception in Light of a Parietal Operculo-Insular Involvement: A Review.

In tinnitus literature, researchers have increasingly been advocating for a clearer distinction between tinnitus perception and tinnitus-related distress. In non-bothersome tinnitus, the perception itself can be more specifically investigated: this has provided a body of evidence, based on resting-state and activation fMRI protocols, highlighting the involvement of regions outside the conventional auditory areas, such as the right parietal operculum. Here, we aim to conduct a review of available investigations of the human parietal operculo-insular subregions conducted at the microscopic, meso

Detecting Risk Gene and Pathogenic Brain Region in EMCI Using a Novel GERF Algorithm Based on Brain Imaging and Genetic Data.

Fusion analysis of disease-related multi-modal data is becoming increasingly important to illuminate the pathogenesis of complex brain diseases. However, owing to the small amount and high dimension of multi-modal data, current machine learning methods do not fully achieve the high veracity and reliability of fusion feature selection. In this paper, we propose a genetic-evolutionary random forest (GERF) algorithm to discover the risk genes and disease-related brain regions of early mild cognitive impairment (EMCI) based on the genetic data and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imagin

Resting state functional connectivity correlates of rumination and worry in internalizing psychopathologies.

BACKGROUND: Rumination and worry are repetitive negative thinking (RNT) tendencies that contribute to the development and maintenance of internalizing psychopathologies. Accruing data suggest rumination and worry represent overlapping and unique transdiagnostic cognitive processes. Yet, prior neuroimaging research has mostly focused on rumination in depression, which points to involvement of resting-state brain activity in default mode, executive, salience, and/or affective networks. METHODS: The current study examined relations between brain activity during rest and RNT in a transdiagnostic

Similarities and differences between internet gaming disorder and tobacco use disorder: A large-scale network study.

Studies have shown that internet gaming disorder (IGD) has the potential to be a type of addiction; however, direct comparisons (similarities and differences) between IGD and traditional addictions remain scarce, especially at the neuroimaging level. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were collected from 92 individuals with IGD, 96 individuals with tobacco use disorders (TUDs) and 107 individuals who served as healthy controls (HCs). Independent component analysis (ICA) was performed to explore the similarities and differences among these three groups; Granger caus

Primary Tumors of the Pituitary Gland: Radiologic-Pathologic Correlation.

Primary tumors of the pituitary gland are the second most common histologic category of primary central nervous system tumors across all age groups and are the most common in adolescents to young adults, despite originating from a diminutive endocrine gland that is often described as "about the size of a pea." The vast majority of these represent primary tumors of the adenohypophysis, specifically pituitary adenomas, which can be either functional or silent with regard to hormone hypersecretion. According to the fourth edition of the World Health Organization classification of endocrine tumors

Glutamate- and GABA-Modulated Connectivity in Auditory Hallucinations-A Combined Resting State fMRI and MR Spectroscopy Study.

Background: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) have been linked to aberrant interhemispheric connectivity between the left and the right superior temporal gyrus (STG), labeled the interhemispheric miscommunication theory. The present study investigated if interhemispheric miscommunication is modulated at the neurochemical level by glutamate (Glu) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) concentrations in temporal and prefrontal lobe areas, as proposed by the theory. Methods: We combined resting-state fMRI connectivity with MR spectroscopy (MRS) in a sample of 81 psychosis patients, comparing patie

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) as a tool to assist the diagnosis of major psychiatric disorders in a Chinese population.

Advances in neuroimaging have promised the development of specific and objective biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. Recently, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has been used during cognitive tasks to measure cortical dysfunction associated with mental illnesses such as Schizophrenia (SCH), Major-Depressive disorder (MD) and Bipolar Disorder (BD). We investigated the ability of fNIRS as a clinically viable tool to successfully distinguish healthy individuals from those with major psychiatric disorders. 316 patients with major psychiatric disorders (

Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound capsulotomy for refractory obsessive compulsive disorder and major depressive disorder: clinical and imaging results from two phase I trials.

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are common, often refractory, neuropsychiatric conditions for which new treatment approaches are urgently needed. Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a novel surgical technique permitting incisionless ablative neurosurgery. We examined the safety profile, clinical response, and imaging correlates of MRgFUS bilateral anterior capsulotomy in patients with refractory obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD, N = 6) and major depressive disorder (MDD, n = 6). There were no serious adverse events. Nonserious adve

Do Individuals With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder Share Similar Neural Mechanisms of Decision-Making Under Ambiguous Circumstances?

Impaired decision-making is well documented in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and a range of electrophysiological and functional neuroimaging measures have begun to reveal the pathological mechanisms that underlie the decision-making process. Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) has core symptoms that often overlap with OCD, but similarities between these disorders at the behavioral and neurological levels are often unclear, including whether OCPD exhibits similar decision-making deficits and shared neurological dysfunction. To address these issues, we examined 24 cases of OCD…
