Plasticity in the subcortical motor basal ganglia-thalamo-cerebellar network plays a key role in the acquisition and control of long-term memory for new procedural skills, from the formation of population trajectories controlling trained motor skills in the striatum to the adaptation of sensorimotor maps in the cerebellum. However, recent findings demonstrate the involvement of a wider cortical and subcortical brain network in the consolidation and control of well-trained actions, including a brain region traditionally associated with declarative memory-the hippocampus. Here, we probe which ro

The "epilepsy-dyskinesia" spectrum is increasingly recognized in neurogenetic and neurometabolic conditions. It can be challenging to diagnose because of clinical and genetic heterogeneity, atypical or nonspecific presentations, and the rarity of each diagnostic entity. This is further complicated by the lack of sensitive or specific biomarkers for most nonenzymatic neurometabolic conditions. Nevertheless, clinical awareness and timely diagnosis are paramount to facilitate appropriate prognostication, counseling, and management. This report describes a case of a teenage girl who had presented a

Pseudodystonia is a term that describes abnormal postures, repetitive movements, or both, where clinical analysis, imaging, laboratory, or electrophysiologic investigations indicate that these movements are not consistent with dystonia. Grisel syndrome (GS), characterized by rotatory subluxation of the atlantoaxial joint (AAJ) due to nontraumatic causes, is a cause of pseudodystonia. GS is seen in children less than 12 years of age and should be suspected in patients with acute onset of painful torticollis. We report 2 girls, aged 9 and 6 years, who developed painful torticollis following uppe

Parkinson's disease is the fastest growing neurological disorder worldwide. Traditionally, diagnosis and monitoring of its motor manifestations depend on examination of the speed, amplitude, and frequency of movement by trained providers. Despite the use of validated scales, clinical examination of movement is semi-quantitative, relatively subjective and it has become a major challenge during the ongoing pandemic. Using digital and technology-based tools during synchronous telehealth can overcome these barriers but it requires access to powerful computers and high-speed internet. In resource-l

Malocclusion is considered as a developmental disorder rather than a disease, and it may be affected by the composition and proportions of masseter muscle fibers. Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that deals with diagnosis and care of various irregular bite and/or malocclusion. Recent developments of 3D scanner and 3D printing technology has led to the use of a removable thermoplastic aligner (RTA), which is widely used due to its aesthetic excellence, comfortableness, and time efficiency. However, orthodontics using only an RTA has lower treatment efficacy and accuracy due to the diffe

The Na leak-current channel (NALCN) regulates the resting membrane potential in excitable cells, thus determining the likelihood of depolarization in response to incoming signals. Gain-of-function (gf) mutations in this channel are associated with severe dystonic movement disorders in man. Currently, there are no known pharmacological antagonists or selective modulators of this important channel. A gain-of-function mutation in NALCN of C. elegans [known as unc-77(e625)] causes uncoordinated, hyperactive locomotion. We hypothesized that this hyperactive phenotype can be rescued with pharmacolog…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Strabismus is an eye movement disorder in which shows the abnormal ocular deviation. Cover tests have mainly been used in the clinical diagnosis of strabismus for treatment. However, the whole process depends on the doctor's level of experience, which could be subjected to several factors. In this study, an automated technique for measurement of ocular deviation using a virtual reality (VR) device is developed.
METHODS: A VR display system in which the screens that have the fixation target are changed alternately between on and off stages is used to simulate the norm

The human trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint has a crucial evolutionary importance as it permits rotation and opposition of the thumb to the other fingers. In chronic TMC joint osteoarthritis (i.e., rhizarthrosis), this motor ability, essential for pinching, grasping, and manipulating objects, may become difficult or impossible due to intolerable pain. Here, we assess whether patients with rhizarthrosis show signs of abnormal brain representation of hand movements. To this end, we studied 35 patients with rhizarthrosis, affecting predominantly one of the two hands, and 35 healthy subjects who unde

We reported previously that both transcutaneous electrical spinal cord stimulation and direct pressure stimulation of the plantar surfaces of the feet can elicit rhythmic involuntary step-like movements in noninjured subjects with their legs in a gravity-neutral apparatus. The present experiments investigated the convergence of spinal and plantar pressure stimulation and voluntary effort in the activation of locomotor movements in uninjured subjects under full body weight support in a vertical position. For all conditions, leg movements were analyzed using electromyographic (EMG) recordings an

Hemifacial microsomia is a hypoplastic disorder of the first and second branchial arches that significantly impacts on the development of the jaws, leading to malocclusion and facial asymmetry. There is little in the literature regarding the application of orthodontic/orthognathic approaches to the correction of these deformities and the stability of the surgical results. To address this, a retrospective chart review of 10 patients with complete orthodontic records and greater than 1 year of follow-up was performed. Posteroanterior cephalograms were assessed by modified Grummons analysis to de

OBJECTIVE: We carried out a systematic video-polysomnographic analysis of the number and type of motor events during REM sleep in narcolepsy-cataplexy patients with REM sleep behavior disorder (NC + RBD) but not clinical RBD (NC-RBD).
METHODS: Twelve NC + RBD and 10 NC-RBD male patients underwent video-polysomnography (video-PSG). Motor events of different type and complexity (i.e., elementary and complex movements and vocalizations) occurring during REM sleep were visually assessed, and indices of their frequency per hour of REM sleep were calculated. Subsequently, the index values were comp

Sleep-related disordered breathing (SDB) and its influence on desaturation were examined in stable COPD patients with waking SpO2 > 90%. With respiratory inductance plethysmography, thoracic-abdominal respiratory movements for all events with more than 4% desaturation were analyzed in 26 patients. Types of SDB were confirmed by full polysomnography. Irregular breathing induced desaturation, while stable respiration continued during some desaturation events. Three types of altered ventilation were observed: hypoventilation, paradoxical movement and periodic breathing. An unusual type of paradox

This study identified acute and chronic akathisia in acute psychiatric inpatients receiving conventional antipsychotic medication, and evaluated the clinical characteristics, risk factors and clinical implications of the condition. Akathisia and other movement disorders were systematically assessed in patients consecutively admitted to an acute psychiatric ward over one year. Akathisia was diagnosed in 15 (21%) of 72 patients. Akathisia, developing as an acute condition in seven patients, generally presented with the subjective experience of dysphoria and unease without restless movements. Thi…

1. It has been proposed that the upper airway is more compliant during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep than during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. The purpose of this study was to test this hypothesis in a group of subjects without sleep-disordered breathing. 2. On the first night, the effect of sleep stage on the relationship of retropalatal cross-sectional area (CSA; visualized with a fibre-optic scope) to pharyngeal pressure (PPH) measured at the soft palate during eupnoeic breathing was studied. Breaths during REM sleep were divided into phasic (associated with eye movements) and tonic

In this study, a paradigm is presented for the assessment of manual dexterity in subjects with cerebral palsy (CP) that divides the prehensile action into a 'time-to-contact' phase and a 'time-in-contact' phase. Two experiments were performed that determined the effect of object weight on the timing of both phases for the impaired hand and non-impaired hand of subjects with spastic hemiparesis (N = 14). In the first experiment, subjects had to reach for and lift a tube at their own preferred speed. The results showed that the prehensile deficit of the impaired limb is to a large degree manifes

PROBLEM: The interdependencies between movements of the thighs and the lumbar vertebral shape are of high practical interest. Which are the normals of this phenomenon?
METHOD: In an experiment on 107 volunteers without before known spinal disorders and complaints of back pain (47 f, 60 m, 17 a-30 a), the interdependencies between movements of the thighs in the sagittal and the lumbar back profile were analysed. Hip joint movements were provoked by a lift jack, elevating the feet to the volunteers, which sat on a bicycle chair. The hip joint flexion was measured by a Zebris CMS 50. The sagitta

An individual's inability to control the movements of their own hand is known as the Anarchic Hand Syndrome. The hand may perform apparently purposeful actions but acts as if it has a will of its own. Although the syndrome was first described over a century ago, the nature of the condition remains, for the most part, obscure, in particular in terms of the definition of the main symptoms and the underlying neural networks. The present study compares the results from in-depth assessments, made at repeated intervals (2, 4 and 7 months from the lesion onset) of the anarchic hand symptoms in three
