BACKGROUND: The difficult airway remains a challenge especially in emergencies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The use of laryngeal tube suction in 8 cases involving difficult airways in emergencies was reviewed.
RESULTS: Use of the laryngeal tube was successful in all cases to bridge patients until a secure airway was established; insertions were successful at the first attempt and classified as easy. In 6 out of 8 patients a secure airway was established by cricothyreotomy or by surgical tracheotomy while using the laryngeal tube for oxygenation and ventilation of the patient.

CONCLUSIONS: For T2 tumors, surgery was indicated if functional preservation was possible. For T3/T4 tumors, the rate of primary disease control was not high and surgery frequently involved total laryngectomy. Points that surgeons must heed when performing such surgery were delineated.

We report the presentation, management and outcomes of patients operated for hyperparathyroidism at our hospital. Patient sunder going surgery for hyper parathyroidism from 20 05 to 2 015 were retrospectively reviewed. Preoperative biochemistry, diagnostic scans and surgical procedures were studied. CONCLUSIONS: We found that the great auricular nerve (GAN) passes at the median (m) point between the tips of the mandibular angle and mastoid process. We also established the GAN definitive line using this point for rapid identification of the trunk of the GAN and systematic parotidectomy combined with procedures for identification of the GAN, elevation of the skin flap, and exposure of the parotid capsule, which showed a high rate of preservation of the nerve and the lobular branch.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to improve parotidectomy and the rate of preservation of the GAN.
