Automated Cough Analysis with Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network.

Chronic cough is associated with several respiratory diseases and is a significant burden on physical, social, and psychological health. Non-invasive, real-time, continuous, and quantitative monitoring tools are highly desired to assess cough severity, the effectiveness of treatment, and monitor disease progression in clinical practice and research. There are currently limited tools to quantitatively measure spontaneous coughs in daily living settings in clinical trials and in clinical practice. In this study, we developed a machine learning model for the detection and classification of cough

Supplementation with Folic Acid or 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate and Prevention of Neural Tube Defects: An Evidence-Based Narrative Review.

Background: Folic acid (FA), which in its chemical form is pteroylglutamic acid, is the fully oxidised, water-soluble, monoglutamic form of vitamin B9. This compound is part of the folate group but with higher bioavailability, and it is found in vitamin supplements and fortified foods and drugs. Folate metabolism is complex and associated with various metabolic pathways, all of which confer protection on the cell and allow its survival. Methods: We conducted a non-systematic search of articles published in English and Spanish including controlled trials, cohort studies, systematic re-views, an

Stimulant-like subjective effects of alcohol are not related to resting-state connectivity in healthy men.

Individual differences in subjective, stimulant-like effects of alcohol are associated with the risk of developing alcohol use disorder. Specifically, individuals who experience more pronounced stimulant-like effects from alcohol are more likely to continue and escalate their usage. The neural basis for these individual differences in subjective response is not yet known. Using a within-subject design, 27 healthy male social drinkers completed three fMRI scans after ingesting a placebo, 0.4 and 0.8 g/kg alcohol, in a randomized order under double-blind conditions. Subjective stimulant effects

Automatic recognition of schizophrenia from brain-network features using graph convolutional neural network.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness that imposes considerable economic burden on families and society. However, its clinical diagnosis primarily relies on scales and doctors' clinical experience and lacks an objective and accurate diagnostic approach. In recent years, graph convolutional neural networks (GCN) have been used to assist in psychiatric diagnosis owing to their ability to learn spatial-association information. Therefore, this study proposes a schizophrenia automatic recognition model based on graph convolutional neural network. Herein, the resting-state electroencephalography

Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation Improves Memory Function in Alzheimer's Mice by Ameliorating Abnormal Gamma Oscillation.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is considered to have a positive effect on the rehabilitation of Alzheimer's disease (AD) as an intervention method that matches stimulation frequency to neurogenesis frequency. However, when tACS intervention is delivered to a single target, the current received by brain regions outside the target may be insufficient to trigger neural activity, compromising the effectiveness of stimulation. Therefore, it is worth studying how single-target tACS restores gamma-band activity in the whole hippocampal-prefrontal circuit during rehabilitation. We

Neural correlates of body image processing in binge eating disorder.

Although body image disturbances play a central role in the development, maintenance and relapse of binge eating disorder (BED), studies investigating the neural basis underlying body processing in BED are still missing. To address this gap, we conducted a preregistered (German Clinical Trials Register [Deutsches Register Klinischer Studien; DRKS], Registration DRKS00008107) combined functional magnetic resonance (fMRI)/eye tracking study in which 38 women with BED and 22 healthy controls weight-matched for overall equivalence processed images of their own bodies, an unfamiliar weight-matched

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of posterior fossa abnormalities (PFA) in the intrauterine period and association with pregnancy outcomes are still controversial. PFA is generally referred to maternal-fetal medicine specialists. The primary purpose of PFA diagnosis is to screen for other accompanying abnormalities, provide prognostic information to families, and discuss the termination option. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in patients diagnosed with PFA between January 2013 and September 2020 in a tertiary perinatology clinic. All patients underwent routine second-trim

Effects of Mind-Body Exercise on Brain Structure and Function: A Systematic Review on MRI Studies.

Mind-body exercise has been proposed to confer both physical and mental health benefits. However, there is no clear consensus on the neural mechanisms underlying the improvements in health. Herein, we conducted a systematic review to reveal which brain region or network is regulated by mind-body exercise. PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases were systematically searched to identify cross-sectional and intervention studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to explore the effect of mind-body exercise on brain structure and func

Oxidative stress, apoptosis and histopathological alterations in brain stem and diencephalon induced by subacute exposure to fipronil in albino rats.

Fipronil (FIP) is a highly effective insecticide that has been used in agriculture and veterinary medicine. Its neurotoxic effect to insects and to non-target organisms, after nonintentional exposure, was reported. Many studies were conducted to evaluate FIP effects on mammals. However, slight is known about its effect on the brain stem and diencephalon. The current study was designed to investigate the ability of FIP to induce oxidative stress as a molecular mechanism of FIP neurotoxicity that resulted in apoptosis and neural tissue reactivity in these regions. Ten adult male rats received 10

Early neurophysiological stimulus processing during a performance-monitoring task differentiates women with bipolar disorder from women with ADHD.

Adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or bipolar disorder (BD) may display similar cognitive impairments and clinical symptoms, which might reflect shared mechanisms. Initial evidence indicates disorder-specific and overlapping neurophysiological alterations using event-related potentials (ERPs) in individuals with BD or ADHD during attentional tasks, but it is unknown whether impairments generalize across other processes and tasks. We conduct the first comparison between women with ADHD (n = 20), women with BD (n = 20) and control women (n = 20) on ERPs from a performanc

SAR and QSAR research on tyrosinase inhibitors using machine learning methods.

Tyrosinase is a key rate-limiting enzyme in the process of melanin synthesis, which is closely related to human pigmentation disorders. Tyrosinase inhibitors can down-regulate tyrosinase to effectively reduce melanin synthesis. In this work, we conducted structure-activity relationship (SAR) study on 1097 diverse mushroom tyrosinase inhibitors. We applied five kinds of machine learning methods to develop 15 classification models. Model 5B built by fully connected neural networks and ECFP4 fingerprints achieved the highest prediction accuracy of 91.36% and Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC)

Altered neuronal excitability in a Hodgkin-Huxley model incorporating channelopathies of the delayed rectifier potassium channel.

Channelopathies involving acquired or genetic modifications of the delayed rectifier K+ channel Kv1.1 include phenotypes characterized by enhanced neuronal excitability. Affected Kv1.1 channels exhibit combinations of altered expression, voltage sensitivity, and rates of activation and deactivation. Computational modeling and analysis can reveal the potential of particular channelopathies to alter neuronal excitability. A dynamical systems approach was taken to study the excitability and underlying dynamical structure of the Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) model of neural excitation as properties of the d

Default network contributions to episodic and semantic processing during divergent creative thinking: A representational similarity analysis.

Cognitive and neuroimaging evidence suggests that episodic and semantic memory-memory for autobiographical events and conceptual knowledge, respectively-support different aspects of creative thinking, with a growing number of studies reporting activation of brain regions within the default network during performance on creative thinking tasks. The present research sought to dissociate neural contributions of these memory processes by inducing episodic or semantic retrieval orientations prior to performance on a divergent thinking task during fMRI. We conducted a representational similarity ana

Low Smoking Exposure, the Adolescent Brain, and the Modulating Role of CHRNA5 Polymorphisms.

BACKGROUND: Studying the neural consequences of tobacco smoking during adolescence, including those associated with early light use, may help expose the mechanisms that underlie the transition from initial use to nicotine dependence in adulthood. However, only a few studies in adolescents exist, and they include small samples. In addition, the neural mechanism, if one exists, that links nicotinic receptor genes to smoking behavior in adolescents is still unknown. METHODS: Structural and diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired from a large sample of 14-year-old adolescen

A Review of Heterogeneity in Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects approximately 8%-12% of children worldwide. Throughout an individual's lifetime, ADHD can significantly increase risk for other psychiatric disorders, educational and occupational failure, accidents, criminality, social disability and addictions. No single risk factor is necessary or sufficient to cause ADHD. The multifactorial causation of ADHD is reflected in the heterogeneity of this disorder, as indicated by its diversity of psychiatric comorbidities, varied clinical profiles, patterns of neurocog
