Support vector machine for classification of walking conditions of persons after stroke with dropped foot.

Walking with dropped foot represents a major gait disorder, which is observed in hemiparetic persons after stroke. This study explores the use of support vector machine (SVMs) to classify different walking conditions for hemiparetic subjects. Seven participants with dropped foot (category 4 of functional ambulatory category) walked in five different conditions: level ground, stair ascent, stair descent, upslope, and downslope. The kinematic data were measured by two portable sensor units, each comprising an accelerometer and gyroscope attached to the lower limb on the shank and foot segments.

Fundamental performance bounds on reservoir computing.

Reservoir computing (RC) exploits the intrinsic dynamics of a chaotic system, called the reservoir, to perform various time-varying functions. An important use-case of RC is the generation of temporal sequences via a trainable output-to-reservoir feedback loop while leaving the reservoir intact, providing a hopeful premise where biological neural networks could harness unstructured groups of neurones for functionality. Despite the promise of RC in various domains, an understanding of why RCs fail in certain scenarios is lacking. Here we formulate an existence condition for a feedback loop that

Asthma induces psychiatric impairments in association with default mode and salience networks alteration: A resting-state EEG study.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with a high prevalence of psychiatric disorders. There are specific brain networks responsible for emotional processes, including two important networks associated with psychiatric problems: the default mode network (DMN), which is more active in the resting state, and the salience network (SN), which is structurally connected to DMN. Although previous studies suggested that neuro-phenotypes of asthma may be recognizable by the neural activity of brain circuits, an association between the brain's functional alterations and psychiatric impairm

Leveraging a Deep Learning Model and Computational Screening for the Discovery of ABCG2 Inhibitors against Drug-Resistant Breast Cancer.

Multidrug resistance (MDR) mediated by ATP-binding cassette transporter G2 (ABCG2) remains a major clinical challenge in breast cancer chemotherapy, primarily due to its role in reducing intracellular adriamycin (ADR) concentrations. To address this challenge, we developed an integrated computational strategy for the rapid identification of potent ABCG2 inhibitors capable of reversing ADR resistance. We first established the Prediction of Protein-Ligand's pKd (PPLK), a specialized deep learning model that employs multimodal sequence-ligand representations and feedforward neural networks to acc

Dual-Path Convolutional Neural Network with Squeeze-and-Excitation Attention for Lung and Colon Histopathology Classification.

Lung and colon cancers remain among the leading causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide, underscoring the need for rapid and accurate histopathological diagnosis. Manual examination of biopsy slides is often time-consuming and prone to inter-observer variability, which highlights the importance of developing reliable and explainable automated diagnostic systems. This study presents DPCSE-Net, a lightweight dual-path convolutional neural network enhanced with a squeeze-and-excitation (SE) attention mechanism for lung and colon cancer classification. The dual-path structure captures both fi

G-computation and machine learning for estimating the causal effects of binary exposure statuses on binary outcomes.

In clinical research, there is a growing interest in the use of propensity score-based methods to estimate causal effects. G-computation is an alternative because of its high statistical power. Machine learning is also increasingly used because of its possible robustness to model misspecification. In this paper, we aimed to propose an approach that combines machine learning and G-computation when both the outcome and the exposure status are binary and is able to deal with small samples. We evaluated the performances of several methods, including penalized logistic regressions, a neural network

Recursive multiresolution convolutional neural networks for 3D aortic valve annulus planimetry.

PURPOSE: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is the standard of care in a large population of patients with severe symptomatic aortic valve stenosis. The sizing of TAVR devices is done from ECG-gated CT angiographic image volumes. The most crucial step of the analysis is the determination of the aortic valve annular plane. In this paper, we present a fully tridimensional recursive multiresolution convolutional neural network (CNN) to infer the location and orientation of the aortic valve annular plane. METHODS: We manually labeled 1007 ECG-gated CT volumes from 94 patients with seve

Development of antipsychotic medications with novel mechanisms of action based on computational modeling of hippocampal neuropathology.

A large number of cellular level abnormalities have been identified in the hippocampus of schizophrenic subjects. Nonetheless, it remains uncertain how these pathologies interact at a system level to create clinical symptoms, and this has hindered the development of more effective antipsychotic medications. Using a 72-processor supercomputer, we created a tissue level hippocampal simulation, featuring multicompartmental neuron models with multiple ion channel subtypes and synaptic channels with realistic temporal dynamics. As an index of the schizophrenic phenotype, we used the specific inabil

Classification of heart murmurs using cepstral features and support vector machines.

Murmurs are auscultatory sounds produced by turbulent blood flow in and around the heart. These sounds usually signify an underlying cardiac pathology, which may include diseased valves or an abnormal passage of blood flow. The murmurs are classified based on their occurrence in different parts of the heart cycle; systolic murmurs and diastolic murmurs. This paper investigates features derived from cepstrum of the heart sound signals and use them to train three classifiers; k-nearest neighbor (kNN) classifier, multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural networks and support vector machines (SVM) for cl

Fingerprint spectrum construction for Chinese wolfberry (CW) origin tracing and key element prediction via multi-source data fusion and intelligent algorithms.

Chinese wolfberry (CW), an essential traditional functional food in China, faces challenges like market confusion about its origin and counterfeiting. A multimodal workflow integrating computer vision and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was applied to 120 CW batches from four regions. Chromaticity, visible-light response, Gabor texture, and elemental data were combined to construct a fingerprint for origin discrimination and elemental prediction. Multivariate statistical analysis identified As, Zn, Fe, Energy, yellow-light response, CIE Z, and b⁎ as key variables with var

Magnetic Domain-Wall Racetrack Grating as a Multichannel Analog Optoelectronic Synapse.

Electrical manipulation of magnetic domain wall motion and its applications constitute a long-standing central topic of spintronics. Recent enthusiasm for magnetically tunable diffractive optics calls for a fast and efficient method of device reconfiguration. Here we develop a chiral domain-wall racetrack grating device whose periodic magnetization structures can be electrically reconfigured by spin-orbit torques without the assistance of external magnetic fields, demonstrating a fast, efficient, and continuous tuning of optical diffraction. We further show that these unique features can be ut

LFODet: Lightweight Few-Shot Object Detection with Meta-Learning in Remote Sensing Images.

Balancing detection accuracy with model lightweightness remains a key challenge in remote sensing object detection. Although convolutional neural networks have improved performance, they typically require large-scale datasets, making few-shot detection of novel classes difficult. To tackle this, we propose LFODet, a lightweight few-shot object detection network based on meta-learning. It uses two parallel branches to rapidly adapt to novel classes with limited samples while maintaining performance on base classes. For efficient feature representation, we integrate Semantic Ghost Channel Attent

The cerebellar deep nuclei: a patch for rate codes?

Neural firing rates are thought to represent values which code information. There are drawbacks with using biophysical events to represent numbers. (1) Rate code (like any sequence) is inherently slow to read. (2) At short intervals, the code becomes unintelligible biophysical noise. (3) Transmission times. The vital contribution of the cerebellum to skilled execution and coordination of movements requires precision timing. We present a theory supported by modeling that the output cell group of the cerebellar network is a practical solution to timing problems. In this role, it converts irregul

Dissociating goal from outcome during action observation.

Understanding the goal of an observed action requires computing representations that are invariant to specific instantiations of the action. For example, we can accurately infer the goal of an action even when the agent's desired outcome is not achieved. Observing actions consistently recruits a set of frontoparietal and posterior temporal regions, often labeled the "action observation network." While progress has been made in charting which regions of the action observation network are involved in understanding goals of observed actions, it is not clear where goals are represented independent

Accelerated NLRP3 inflammasome-inhibitory peptide design using a recurrent neural network model and molecular dynamics simulations.

Anomalous NLRP3 inflammasome responses have been linked to multiple health issues, including but not limited to atherosclerosis, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative disease. Thus, targeting NLRP3 and modulating its associated immune response might be a promising strategy for developing new anti-inflammatory drugs. Herein, we report a computational method for de novo peptide design for targeting NLRP3 inflammasomes. The described method leverages a long-short-term memory (LSTM) network based on a recurrent neural network (RNN) to model a valuable latent s

Dual-axes of functional organisation across lateral parietal cortex: the angular gyrus forms part of a multi-modal buffering system.

Decades of neuropsychological and neuroimaging evidence have implicated the lateral parietal cortex (LPC) in a myriad of cognitive domains, generating numerous influential theoretical models. However, these theories fail to explain why distinct cognitive activities appear to implicate common neural regions. Here we discuss a unifying model in which the angular gyrus forms part of a wider LPC system with a core underlying neurocomputational function; the multi-sensory buffering of spatio-temporally extended representations. We review the principles derived from computational modelling with neur

SARS-Net: COVID-19 detection from chest x-rays by combining graph convolutional network and convolutional neural network.

COVID-19 has emerged as one of the deadliest pandemics that has ever crept on humanity. Screening tests are currently the most reliable and accurate steps in detecting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus in a patient, and the most used is RT-PCR testing. Various researchers and early studies implied that visual indicators (abnormalities) in a patient's Chest X-Ray (CXR) or computed tomography (CT) imaging were a valuable characteristic of a COVID-19 patient that can be leveraged to find out virus in a vast population. Motivated by various contributions to open-source community to tac

Pre-supplementary motor area strengthens reward sensitivity in intertemporal choice.

Previous investigations on the causal neural mechanisms underlying intertemporal decision making focused on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex as neural substrate of cognitive control. However, little is known, about the causal contributions of further parts of the frontoparietal control network to delaying gratification, including the pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Conflicting previous evidence related pre-SMA and PPC either to evidence accumulation processes, choice biases, or response caution. To disentangle between these alternatives, we combine
