Epidemiology of mental health problems in COVID-19: a review.

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a pandemic affecting health and wellbeing globally. In addition to the physical health, economic, and social implications, the psychological impacts of this pandemic are increasingly being reported in the scientific literature. This narrative review reflected on scholarly articles on the epidemiology of mental health problems in COVID-19. The current literature suggests that people affected by COVID-19 may have a high burden of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety disorders, stress, panic attack, irrational anger, impuls

Autistic-like traits and their association with mental health problems in two nationwide twin cohorts of children and adults.

BACKGROUND: Autistic-like traits (ALTs), that is restrictions in intuitive social interaction, communication and flexibility of interests and behaviors, were studied in two population-based Swedish twin studies, one in children and one in adults: (1) to examine whether the variability in ALTs is a meaningful risk factor for concomitant attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, conduct problems, depression and substance abuse, and (2) to assess whether common genetic and environmental susceptibilities can help to explain co-existence of ALTs and traits associated with such conco

Vulnerable child syndrome, parental perception of child vulnerability, and emergency department usage.

BACKGROUND: Vulnerable child syndrome (VCS) describes children perceived to be at risk for behavioral, developmental, or medical problems. Families with the dynamics of VCS overuse health care resources with frequent visits to doctors' offices. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to explore the relationship between VCS, parental perception of child vulnerability (PPCV), and frequency of emergency department (ED) visits. DESIGN/METHODS: Parents of patients 1 to 15 years old presenting with nonurgent complaints to a pediatric ED were eligible. Participants completed questionnaires in whi

Dissociation predicts later attention problems in sexually abused children.

OBJECTIVE: The goals of this research are to develop and test a prospective model of attention problems in sexually abused children that includes fixed variables (e.g., gender), trauma, and disclosure-related pathways. METHODS: At Time 1, fixed variables, trauma variables, and stress reactions upon disclosure were assessed in 156 children aged 8-13 years. At the Time 2 follow-up (8-36 months following the initial interview), 56 of the children were assessed for attention problems. RESULTS: A path analysis involving a series of hierarchically nested, ordinary least squares multiple regression

Parenting, attention and externalizing problems: testing mediation longitudinally, repeatedly and reciprocally.

BACKGROUND: Building on prior work, this paper tests, longitudinally and repeatedly, the proposition that attentional control processes medi … ed (54 months--> approximately 6 years; approximately 6 years--> approximately 8 years), but not of problem behavior on attention. CONCLUSIONS: Because attention control partially mediates the effects of parenting on externalizing problems, intervention efforts could target both parenting and attentional processes.

Orofacial problems in scuba diving: prevalence and prevention-a large-scale survey among civilian divers in France.

Self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA) diving is becoming widely democratized among hobbyist practitioners. It can cause orofacial problems, mostly linked to pressure changes. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of these problems and to analyze civilian divers' behavior about their dental prevention in France, via a cross-sectional study. Data from 1015 French civilian divers were collected via a nationwide online questionnaire in which participants indicated information concerning orofacial experienced problems during their diving activity, and their medical prev

Feasibility of Brief Screening for At-Risk Gambling in Consumer Credit Counseling.

Gambling disorder and problem gambling often lead to major suffering in the form of mental health problems, interpersonal conflict, and financial crises. One potential setting for detecting at-risk gambling is credit counseling as gambling problems may manifest themselves in the form of financial distress and bankruptcy. Research studies have not considered those seeking credit counseling as individuals at risk for gambling problems even though gambling may contribute to financial distress. Therefore, the current study sought to quantify the prevalence of at-risk gambling in credit counseling

The Parent-Child Relationship and Posttreatment Child Outcomes Across Two Treatments for Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

This study examined the degree to which the parent-child relationship uniquely predicted clinical outcomes in externalizing problems and adaptive skills in children meeting diagnostic criteria for oppositional defiant disorder and whether facets of this relationship moderated the effects of two unique psychosocial treatments. We recruited 134 children and their parents (38.06% female; M age = 9.52 years, range = 7-14; 83.58% White). Families were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: Parent Management Training (PMT) and Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS). We formed principal compone

The joint role of impulsivity and distorted cognitions in recreational and problem gambling: A cluster analytic approach.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Pathways Model (Blaszczynski & Nower, 2002) posits that problem gambling is a heterogeneous disorder with distinct subgroups (behaviorally conditioned gamblers, emotionally vulnerable gamblers, and antisocial-impulsivist gamblers). Impulsivity traits and gambling-related cognitions are recognized as two key psychological factors in the onset and maintenance of problem gambling. To date, these constructs have been explored separately, and their joint role in determining problem gambling subtypes has received little attention. The goal of our study was to identify subgro

Treatment of trauma related anger in operation enduring freedom, operation Iraqi freedom, and operation New Dawn veterans: Rationale and study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Problems with anger and aggression are highly prevalent in Veterans of multiple war eras, including the most recent conflicts in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom; OEF) and Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom; OIF). The consequences of these problems, such as increased rates of divorce, domestic violence, occupational instability, arrests and incarceration, are often devastating. Despite the seriousness of these problems, relatively little is known about effective treatments for anger in Veterans. METHOD AND DESIGN: This paper describes the rationale and study protocol of a random

Accelerated long-term forgetting and behavioural difficulties in children with epilepsy.

Patients with epilepsy have been shown to exhibit a range of memory deficits, including the rapid forgetting of newly-learned material over long, but not short, delays (termed accelerated long-term forgetting; ALF). Behavioural problems, such as mood disorders and social difficulties, are also overrepresented among children with epilepsy, when compared to patients with other chronic diseases and the general population. We investigated whether ALF was associated with behavioural or psychosocial deficits in children with epilepsy. Patients with either idiopathic generalised epilepsy (IGE; n = 20

Internet-based interventions for disordered gamblers: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial of online self-directed cognitive-behavioural motivational therapy.

BACKGROUND: Gambling disorders affect about one percent of adults. Effective treatments are available but only a small proportion of affected individuals will choose to attend formal treatment. As a result, self-directed treatments have also been developed and found effective. Self-directed treatments provide individuals with information and support to initiate a recovery program without attending formal treatment. In previous research we developed an telephone-based intervention package that helps people to be motivated to tackle their gambling problem and to use basic behavioral and cognitiv

22q11.2 deletion syndrome: behaviour problems of children and adolescents and parental stress.

BACKGROUND: 22q11.2 deletion syndrome can be associated with a variety of somatic symptoms, developmental delays and psychiatric disorders. At present, there is little information on behaviour problems, parental stress and possible relations between these factors. Therefore, this study investigates behaviour problems of children and adolescents with 22q11.2DS, and their primary caregivers' stress. METHODS: Parents of 4-17 year old subjects known to the German 22q11.2 deletion syndrome foundation were anonymously asked to fill out several questionnaires, e.g. the Child Behavior Checklist 4-18

Gender, violence, and killing: Revisiting femicide, and the overlooked realities of male victimization.

The term femicide, widely used in reference to the "killing of a woman because she is a woman," has been questioned on the ground that it implies unequal dignity of men and women victims of gender related death. This position called for an analysis of the terminology used to describe and define the various forms of killing of women and men. We conclude that the use of the term "femicide" retains as a central facet the objective of raising awareness of this crime and combating violence directed at women by men. We also analyzed the current use of the word "androcide" and concluded that its pres
