Analysis of audiometric notch as a noise-induced hearing loss phenotype in US youth: data from the National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey, 2005-2010.

OBJECTIVE: Bilateral audiometric notch (BN) at 4000-6000 Hz was identified as a noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) phenotype for genetic association analysis in college-aged musicians. This study analysed BN in a sample of US youth. DESIGN: Prevalence of the BN within the study sample was determined and logistic-regression analyses were performed to identify audiologic and other demographic factors associated with BN. Computer-simulated "flat" audiograms were used to estimate potential influence of false-positive rates in estimating the prevalence of the BN. STUDY SAMPLE: 2348 participants (1

L-type calcium channels refine the neural population code of sound level.

The coding of sound level by ensembles of neurons improves the accuracy with which listeners identify how loud a sound is. In the auditory system, the rate at which neurons fire in response to changes in sound level is shaped by local networks. Voltage-gated conductances alter local output by regulating neuronal firing, but their role in modulating responses to sound level is unclear. We tested the effects of L-type calcium channels (CaL: CaV1.1-1.4) on sound-level coding in the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (ICC) in the auditory midbrain. We characterized the contribution of CaL

Nighttime aircraft noise impairs endothelial function and increases blood pressure in patients with or at high risk for coronary artery disease.

AIMS: Epidemiological studies suggest the existence of a relationship between aircraft noise exposure and increased risk for myocardial infarction and stroke. Patients with established coronary artery disease and endothelial dysfunction are known to have more future cardiovascular events. We therefore tested the effects of nocturnal aircraft noise on endothelial function in patients with or at high risk for coronary artery disease. METHODS: 60 Patients (50p 1-3 vessels disease; 10p with a high Framingham Score of 23%) were exposed in random and blinded order to aircraft noise and no noise con

The neurobiology of speech perception decline in aging.

Speech perception difficulties are common among elderlies; yet the underlying neural mechanisms are still poorly understood. New empirical evidence suggesting that brain senescence may be an important contributor to these difficulties has challenged the traditional view that peripheral hearing loss was the main factor in the etiology of these difficulties. Here, we investigated the relationship between structural and functional brain senescence and speech perception skills in aging. Following audiometric evaluations, participants underwent MRI while performing a speech perception task at diffe

Noise and age-related hearing loss: a study of 40 123 gold miners in South Africa.

OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study aimed to describe the differential effect of noise exposure and age-related hearing loss in a large sample of gold miners in South Africa. STUDY SAMPLE: Audiological data of 40 123 South African mine workers were investigated. Data of a non-noise-exposed control group (n = 6162) and group exposed to underground noise (≥ 85 dB A (TWA) (n = 33 961) were included. Within these two larger noise-exposed groups two homogenous exposure groups (HEG) were also selected for analyses, namely the driller group (n = 4399) and the administration group (

T-817MA, a novel neurotrophic agent, ameliorates loss of GABAergic parvalbumin-positive neurons and sensorimotor gating deficits in rats transiently exposed to MK-801 in the neonatal period.

T-817MA [1-{3-[2-(1-benzothiophen-5-yl)ethoxy]propyl}azetidin-3-ol maleate] is a newly synthesized neuroprotective agent for the treatment of psychiatric disorders characterized by cognitive disturbances, such as Alzheimer's disease. Cognitive impairment has also been suggested to be a cardinal feature of schizophrenia. We sought to determine whether T-817MA would ameliorate sensorimotor gating deficits and loss of parvalbumin (PV)-positive γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurons in the brain of rats transiently exposed to MK-801, an N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor blocker, in the neonatal stage, as

Progress in cochlear physiology after Békésy.

In the fifty years since Békésy was awarded the Nobel Prize, cochlear physiology has blossomed. Many topics that are now current are things Békésy could not have imagined. In this review we start by describing progress in understanding the origin of cochlear gross potentials, particularly the cochlear microphonic, an area in which Békésy had extensive experience. We then review progress in areas of cochlear physiology that were mostly unknown to Békésy, including: (1) stereocilia mechano-electrical transduction, force production, and response amplification, (2) outer hair cell (OHC) somatic mo

Discrete neocortical dynamics predict behavioral categorization of sounds.

The ability to group stimuli into perceptual categories is essential for efficient interaction with the environment. Discrete dynamics that emerge in brain networks are believed to be the neuronal correlate of category formation. Observations of such dynamics have recently been made; however, it is still unresolved if they actually match perceptual categories. Using in vivo two-photon calcium imaging in the auditory cortex of mice, we show that local network activity evoked by sounds is constrained to few response modes. Transitions between response modes are characterized by an abrupt switch,

[On the reliability of brainstem electric response audiometry (BERA)].

BACKGROUND: Brainstem electric response audiometries (BERA) are in clinical use for a number of years. The aim of our study was to evaluate data regarding the long-term reliability of BERA-determined frequency specific thresholds in hearing disabled children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a group of 97 hearing disabled children we sought to compare Notched-Noise- (NN) BERA threshold as well as Click-BERA thresholds taken shortly after birth with behavioral audiometry thresholds determined after 3.2 years (mean). RESULTS: We found a significant correlation between both BERA methods and the behavio

Interactions between corticotropin-releasing factor and the serotonin 1A receptor system on acoustic startle amplitude and prepulse inhibition of the startle response in two rat strains.

Both the neuropeptide, corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and the serotonin 1A (5-HT(1A)) receptor systems have been implicated in anxiety disorders and there is evidence that the two systems interact with each other to affect behavior. Both systems have individually been shown to affect prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle response. PPI is a form of sensorimotor gating that is reduced in patients with anxiety disorders including post-traumatic stress and panic disorder. Here, we examined whether the two systems interact or counteract each other to affect acoustic startle amplit

Auditory processing deficits in individuals with primary open-angle glaucoma.

OBJECTIVE: The high energy demand of the auditory and visual pathways render these sensory systems prone to diseases that impair mitochondrial function. Primary open-angle glaucoma, a neurodegenerative disease of the optic nerve, has recently been associated with a spectrum of mitochondrial abnormalities. This study sought to investigate auditory processing in individuals with open-angle glaucoma. DESIGN/STUDY SAMPLE: Twenty-seven subjects with open-angle glaucoma underwent electrophysiologic (auditory brainstem response), auditory temporal processing (amplitude modulation detection), and spee

Binaural measurement of bone conduction click evoked otoacoustic emissions in adults and infants.

Transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) are usually evoked with air conduction (AC) stimuli. Only a few reports exist about OAEs where stimuli have been delivered using bone conduction (BC) by placing a bone conductor on the forehead or the mastoid. The aims of the present study were to improve the test performance of BC-TEOAEs by using a nonlinear stimulation protocol and to find out, whether this technique can be applied in newborn hearing screening. BC-TEOAEs were measured binaurally in ten normal hearing adults and in ten infants. For measurements in infants, miniaturized probes wi

Unstable distortion-product otoacoustic emission phase in Menière's disease.

The presence of endolymphatic hydrops as a marker of Menière's disease (MD) suggests abnormal pressure in the intralabyrinthine compartments of patients and excessive stiffness of sound-sensitive structures. Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) have been reported to respond to changes in the ear's stiffness, including those produced by intracranial pressure steps, by a characteristic phase shift around 1 kHz, thereby suggesting a noninvasive means of monitoring MD. Here, body tilt was used for modulating intracranial pressure in forty-one patients with definite MD who were tentatively measured at two

Acoustic overstimulation modifies Mcl-1 expression in cochlear sensory epithelial cells.

Acoustic overstimulation causes apoptotic cell death in the cochlea. This death process is mediated, in part, by the mitochondrial signaling pathway involving Bcl-2 family proteins. Myeloid cell leukemia sequence 1 (Mcl-l) is an antiapoptotic member of the Bcl-2 family. Its involvement in noise-induced hair cell death has not been characterized. Here we report the endogenous expression and the noise-induced expression of Mcl-1 in Sprague Dawley rat cochleae. In the sensory epithelia of normal cochleae, there is strong constitutive expression of Mcl-1 mRNA, with an expression level higher than

Mutation of OPA1 gene causes deafness by affecting function of auditory nerve terminals.

Autosomal dominant optic atrophy (DOA) is a retinal neuronal degenerative disease characterized by a progressive bilateral visual loss. We report on two affected members of a family with dominantly inherited neuropathy of both optic and auditory nerves expressed by impaired visual acuity, moderate pure tone hearing loss, and marked loss of speech perception. We investigated cochlear abnormalities accompanying the hearing loss and the effects of cochlear implantation. We sequenced OPA1 gene and recorded cochlear receptor and neural potentials before cochlear implantation. Genetic analysis ident

Distinct profiles of anxiety and dysphoria during spontaneous withdrawal from acute morphine exposure.

The negative motivational aspects of withdrawal include symptoms of both anxiety and depression, and emerge after termination of chronic drug use as well as after acute drug exposure. States of acute withdrawal are an inherent part of intermittent drug use in humans, but the contribution of acute withdrawal to the development of addiction has received limited systematic investigation, because of a lack of preclinical models for withdrawal states that emerge spontaneously after acute drug exposure. Here, we have characterized a spontaneous increase in the magnitude of the acoustic startle refle
