OBJECTIVES: Wideband tympanometry (WBT) measures middle-ear function across a range of frequencies (250 to 8000 Hz) while the ear-canal pressure is varied from +200 to -300 daPa. WBT is a suitable test to evaluate middle-ear function in children, but there is a lack of age-, ear-, gender-, or ethnicity-specific data throughout the literature. Monaural loudness balances were performed by eight normal-hearing subjects to determine the effect of click repetition rate on loudness sensation. Click trains of 500 msec duration were matched in loudness to a standard 500 msec 1000 Hz tone burst presented at three reference loudness levels (70, 80, and 90 phons). Most of the commercial impedance measuring devices for ipsilateral stimulus still apply probe tone and stimulus at the same time, thus eliciting artefacts and a great variety of answers. Results of ipsilateral reaction using the impedance apparatus of Grason and Stadler with an intermittent stimulus generator are shown and discussed. The diagnostic value appears improved.

Between 25 and 48% of schwannomas have been reported to occur in the head and neck region; the acoustic nerve is involved in most cases. Schwannomas arising in the tonsil are extremely uncommon. We report a case of tonsillar schwannoma in a 23-year-old woman. We also review the literature on this rare entity.

Smoking and occupational exposure to noise are factors with independent predisposition to sensorineural hearing loss. This is a sinergistic and additive effect. Nevertheless, we have observed that withdrawal of smoking stops the progression on hearing loss in occupational groups with an acoustic exposition lesser than 80 dB SPL. Actually, there is not an unique ethiologic hypothesis.

A 21 years old man presented biliary colic. Ultrasonography showed in the gallbladder an homogeneous, solid mass, 4 cm large, without acoustic shadowing and no postural movement. The increase of eosinophilic blood cells suggested the diagnosis of distomiasis of the gallbladder. The diagnosis has been confirmed by immunofluorescent test and surgery.

Tremor in Parkinson's disease is most frequently studied in the limbs, even though it also occurs in the vocal tract. In the current study, we assessed the presence of tongue, lip and jaw tremor in 34 individuals with Parkinson's disease (IwPD) and 25 controls (CS).
