Some samples of cow milk proteins and enzymatic hydrolysates prepared on their basis were investigated in experiments on male guinea pigs to elucidate their sensitizing properties and influence on sensitivity to histamine LD50. The data obtained are discussed with respect to a possible modulation of allergic reactions by the products of incomplete enzymatic proteolysis.

The role of the mast cell in ocular allergy is becoming understood. As a result, the therapeutic effects of agents that stabilize the mast cell have been evaluated in the treatment of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, atopic keratoconjunctivitis, and giant papillary conjunctivitis. At present, cromolyn sodium is the only available mast cell stabilizer of known effectiveness. Clinical and laboratory investigations of the effectiveness of cromolyn sodium in the treatment of ocular allergy are reviewed in the present article.

Celery allergies are commonly observed in mugwort pollen-allergic patients. This situation is frequently associated with an allergy to spices of the umbelliferous family. The effects of lysozyme and sodium diethyl-dithiocarbamate (DTC) were studied on antibody synthesis induced by immunization with a hapten-carrier complex. The immunomodulating effects of lysozyme could be partially reversed by DTC, a sulphur derivative which has been previously shown to modulate the immune response, probably at the macrophage level. The mechanisms whereby lysozyme and DTC modulated the immune response are discussed.

Eleven patients who suffered a reaction to the administration of muscle relaxants during induction of general anesthesia were explored using skin tests, leukocyte histamine release, lymphocyte transformation test, and the Prausnitz-Küstner test (P-K). A method of preparing an antiserum to bovine reaginic immunoglobulins is described. Sera administered intravenously to mice hypersensitized with normal horse serum and with horse serum of anti-lymphocytic activity, produce reactions that differ considerably in mice treated in different ways. The experiments of the authors indicate that the anaphylactogenic effect of ATS is substantially stronger than that or normal horse serum. The paper discusses the clinical and theoretical conclusions to be drawn from this phenomenon observed in the experiments.
