Therapeutic efficacy of an ivermectin dose of 200 μg/kg/day for 2 consecutive days to treat Strongyloides stercoralis infection: A serological evaluation in Vietnam.

Strongyloidiasis is a neglected infectious disease with diverse clinical manifestations that may lead to severe complications, including death in immunocompromised individuals. Uncomplicated infections can be diagnosed early using serological testing. Regarding treatment, the World Health Organization recommends ivermectin, thiabendazole, and albendazole as effective therapies against Strongyloides stercoralis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effectiveness of ivermectin 200 μg/kg/day for 2 consecutive days in patients infected with S. stercoralis, with the aim of op

Efficacy of two brands of Mebendazole (500 mg) in the treatment of Ascaris lumbricoides and hookworm infection among school-aged children in South Gondar zone, Northwest Ethiopia: a randomized open label trial.

BACKGROUND: Parasitic worms remain a serious public health problem in developing countries. Mebendazole is a widely used anthelmintic, but variations in drug efficacy among different brands of mebendazole may impact treatment outcomes. This trial investigated efficacy of two different brands of mebendazole (Vermox® and X-WORM®) used in the deworming program and available in local pharmaceutical shops. METHODS: A randomized, open label trial was conducted among 212 children in Alember and Addis Zemen primary schools. Convenient sampling technique was used to select schools and study participan

Ivermectin-albendazole combination versus ivermectin or albendazole alone in soil transmitted helminthiasis: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections caused by Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides, and hookworms continue to exhibit a significant prevalence in low and middle-income countries. Monotherapy with albendazole or ivermectin demonstrates limited effectiveness against these, prompting the exploration of combinations of benzimidazoles and macrocyclic lactones as potential alternatives. METHODS: We conducted an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published from March 2023 to May 2025, comparing ivermectin-albendazole (IVM+ALB) w

Unusual presentation of Enterobius vermicularis infestation of the uterine cervix during pregnancy.

Genital tract parasitic infestations are extremely rare, particularly during pregnancy. Awareness of such cases is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management. A 22-week pregnant woman in the 20s presented with lower abdominal pain. The general examination was normal; however, speculum examination revealed worm infestation of the uterine cervix with cervical ectropion. Microscopic examination of the cervical smear identified a gravid female Enterobius vermicularis containing eggs. The patient was treated with albendazole (400 mg, repeated after 2 weeks), and household contacts received the s

Prevalence and intensity of soil-transmitted helminth infections in Narok and Bomet Counties, Kenya: Evidence from program monitoring.

BACKGROUND: The backbone of Kenya's soil-transmitted helminthiasis control program is the periodic distribution of anti-helminthic preventive chemotherapy (PC). PC distribution has been conducted since 2012 through the National School-Based Deworming Programme, which deworms school-age children (SAC, 5-14 years) living in areas at high risk for soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections. After nearly a decade of deworming, the Ministry of Health sought to generate evidence for program monitoring by estimating the prevalence and intensity of STH infection in Narok and Bomet counties among at-ri

Associations of Schistosoma mansoni Infection, Latent Tuberculosis, Host Interferon-γ Concentrations, and Praziquantel Treatment in Tanzanian Adults.

Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and Schistosoma mansoni are common in Africa, and helminth-induced immunomodulation may affect LTBI detection. This study aimed to assess whether S. mansoni infection affects LTBI detection by the QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus (QFT-Plus) assay and alters serum interferon-γ (IFN-γ) concentrations in response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) antigens at baseline and after 1 year, during which participants with S. mansoni infection received praziquantel treatment. At baseline, 65 individuals with schistosome infection had lower average IFN-γ concentrations in TB

Disability in childhood and the equity of health services: a cross-sectional comparison of mass drug administration strategies for soil-transmitted helminths in southern Malawi.

BACKGROUND: School-based approaches are an efficient mechanism for the delivery of basic health services, but may result in the exclusion of children with disabilities if they are less likely to participate in schooling. Community-based 'door to door' approaches may provide a more equitable strategy to ensure that children with disabilities are reached, but disability is rarely assessed rigorously in the evaluation of health interventions. OBJECTIVES: To describe the prevalence and factors associated with disability among children aged 5-17 years and to assess the relative effectiveness of ro

Efficacy of a Single Oral Dose of Artesunate plus Sulfalene-Pyrimethamineversus Praziquantel in the Treatment of Schistosoma mansoni in Kenyan Children: An Open-Label, Randomized, Exploratory Trial.

Unlike praziquantel, artemisinin derivatives are effective against juvenile schistosome worms. We assessed the efficacy and safety of a single oral dose of artesunate plus sulfalene-pyrimethamine versus praziquantel in the treatment of Schistosoma mansoni. Seventy-three schoolchildren (aged 9-15 years) with confirmed S. mansoni infection in Rarieda, western Kenya, were randomly assigned to receive either a single oral dose of artesunate plus sulfalene-pyrimethamine (n = 39) or a single dose of praziquantel (n = 34). The cure and egg reduction rates at 4 weeks posttreatment were 69.4% (25/36) v

Initial Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings in Hepatic Fascioliasis and Serological and Radiological Response After Triclabendazole Treatment.

Fascioliasis, a food-borne trematodiasis, is a disease primarily identified in livestock, such as sheep and cattle. Human fascioliasis has been reported sporadically in Korea, but a recent increase in patients has been associated with a green vegetable juice delivery service. We aimed to investigate the serological and radiological findings of the patients treated for fascioliasis. Patients with peripheral eosinophilia, which is a positive antibody for Fasciola hepatica (F. hepatica) and liver abscess, were considered to have fascioliasis and were treated with triclabendazole at a dose of 10 m

Hydatid cyst in heart and lung: a rare case with a 5-year follow-up.

This report describes a male in his late 20s who presented with a 2-month history of recurrent haemoptysis and chest pain. A chronic infection, such as tuberculosis, was suspected. He had undergone surgical resection of an intrapericardial hydatid cyst in the past. His blood investigations showed peripheral eosinophilia, and his chest X-ray showed a cystic oval lesion in the left upper zone. A CT pulmonary angiogram revealed filling defects in the bilateral segmental and subsegmental arteries with a cystic lesion in the left upper lobe. Further workup, including bronchoalveolar lavage culture

Persistent transmission of soil-transmitted helminths despite 16 years of uninterrupted Mebendazole- and ivermectin-based preventive chemotherapy in the Lomie Health District (East Region, Cameroon): The emergency of complementary control strategies.

BACKGROUND: The control of the Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH) infections primarily relies on the school-based Preventive Chemotherapy (PCT) with mebendazole. Given the efficacy of ivermectin on STH, the control of the latter is expected to be potentialized in areas where ivermectin is also distributed for onchocerciasis and/or lymphatic filariasis control/elimination. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and intensity of STH in the Lomie Health District where annual school-based deworming campaigns and community-directed treatments with Ivermectin have been underway for almost two decad

Effect of mast cell stabilization on angiogenesis in primary and secondary experimental Trichinella spiralis infection.

BACKGROUND: Mast cells are known to affect the primary and secondary immune responses against parasites, and this effect is partially mediated through the release of pro-angiogenic mediators. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of the mast cell stabilizer (MCS), ketotifen, with and without albendazole, an anti-parasitic prescription medicine, on the inflammatory response against Trichinella spiralis, with the overall aim to investigate its effect on angiogenesis accompanying nurse cell formation. METHODS: The effect of ketotifen and albendazole was explored in eight groups of fema

Schistosomiasis Consortium for Operational Research and Evaluation: Mission Accomplished.

The Schistosomiasis Consortium for Operational Research and Evaluation (SCORE), a program focusing on schistosomiasis control in sub-Saharan Africa between 2008 and 2019, investigated ways to improve coverage and efficacy of ongoing chemotherapy programs and concluded that because of continued transmission, mass distribution of praziquantel cannot eliminate the disease without complementary control activities. Schistosomiasis Consortium for Operational Research and Evaluation's activities comprised large-scale, multicountry field studies comparing various mass drug administration strategies an

Baseline patterns of infection in regions of Benin, Malawi and India seeking to interrupt transmission of soil transmitted helminths (STH) in the DeWorm3 trial.

Global efforts to control morbidity associated with soil-transmitted helminth infections (STH) have focused largely on the targeted treatmen … upting the transmission of STH using community-wide delivery of mass drug administration (MDA) with anthelmintics over multiple rounds. Here, we present baseline data and estimate key epidemiological parameters important in determining the likelihood of transmission interruption in the DeWorm3 trial. A baseline census was conducted in October-December 2017 in I …

Clinical Characteristics of Disseminated Strongyloidiasis, Japan, 1975-2017.

Clinical characteristics of disseminated strongyloidiasis, the severest form of strongyloidiasis, are not well described. We conducted a retrospective, consecutive chart review of patients with disseminated strongyloidiasis admitted to Okinawa Chubu Hospital in Okinawa, Japan, during January 1975-December 2017. The 70 patients were classified into 3 clinical phenotypes: dissemination (32 patients [45.7%]), occult dissemination with meningitis caused by enteric organisms (12 patients [17.1%]), and occult dissemination with culture-negative suppurative meningitis (26 patients [37.1%]). Insufficiency of annual praziquantel treatment to control Schistosoma mansoni infections in adult women: A longitudinal cohort study in rural Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Current World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines recommend annual mass drug administration using praziquantel in areas with high schistosome endemicity. Yet little is known about incidence and reinfection rates after treatment in women with frequent exposure to schistosomes. We sought to quantify response to anti-schistosome treatment and incident S. mansoni infections in a cohort of rural women living in a schistosome-endemic area of northwest Tanzania. METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We enrolled women with and without S. mansoni infection into a 12-month longitudinal cohort. E

Two-year longitudinal survey reveals high genetic diversity of Schistosoma mansoni with adult worms surviving praziquantel treatment at the start of mass drug administration in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: A key component of schistosomiasis control is mass drug administration with praziquantel. While control interventions have been successful in several endemic regions, mass drug administration has been less effective in others. Here we focus on the impact of repeated praziquantel treatment on the population structure and genetic diversity of Schistosoma mansoni. METHODS: We examined S. mansoni epidemiology, population genetics, and variation in praziquantel susceptibility in parasites isolated from children across three primary schools in a high endemicity region at the onset of th
