In this case report of a screw extrusion into the gastrointestinal tract of a patient 16 months after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), the authors describe a rare but potentially lethal complication and review the literature on this topic. A 70-year-old white man with a surgical history of ACDF at C3-4 underwent an ACDF at C5-6 with autologous bone graft and a dynamic plate using locking, expanding screws. Sixteen months after the operation the patient presented with severe dysphagia. Radiographic findings indicating pulling out of the implanted plate and screws prompted a surgi

OBJECTIVES: To determine the association between individual radiographic features of lumbar disc degeneration and bone mineral density (BMD) at the spine and hip.
SUBJECTS: were recruited from a population register for a screening survey of vertebral osteoporosis. BMD was assessed at the spine and hip using dual energy x ray absorptiometry. Lateral spinal radiographs were evaluated for features of lumbar disc degeneration. Each vertebral level from L1/2 to L4/5 was assessed for the presence and severity of osteophytes, end plate sclerosis, and disc space narrowing. Linear regression was used

In children with precocious puberty (PP), treatment with GnRH analogs (GnRHa) often decreases height velocity below normal. Based on previous animal studies, we hypothesized that this impaired growth is due to excessive advancement in growth plate senescence induced by the prior estrogen exposure. This hypothesis predicts that the height velocity during treatment will be inversely related to the severity of prior estrogen exposure. We analyzed data from 100 girls (age, 5.8 +/- 2.1 yr; mean +/- SD) with central PP who were treated with GnRHa. During GnRHa therapy, height velocity was low for ag

PURPOSE: Micro-computed tomography (CT) analysis of soft tissues alongside bone remains challenging due to significant differences in X-ray absorption, preventing spatial inspection of bone remodeling including the cellular intricacies of mineralized tissues in developmental biology and pathology. The goal was to develop a protocol for contrast-enhanced micro-CT imaging that effectively visualizes soft tissues and cells in conjunction with bone while minimizing bone attenuation by decalcification.
APPROACH: Murine femur samples were decalcified in ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and treated w

Subchondral bone participates in crosstalk with articular cartilage to maintain joint homeostasis, and disruption of either tissue results in overall joint degeneration. Among the subchondral bone changes observed in osteoarthritis (OA), subchondral bone plate (SBP) thickening has a time-dependent relationship with cartilage degeneration and has recently been shown to be regulated by osteocytes. Here, we evaluate the effect of age on SBP thickness and cartilage degeneration in aging mice. We find that SBP thickness significantly increases by 18-months of age, corresponding temporally with incr

Blood biochemistry and bone metabolism were evaluated to investigate the etiology and mechanism of spontaneous femoral head necrosis (FHN) in broilers. According to the femoral head score of the fourth, fifth, and sixth week old FHN-affected broilers, they were divided into 3 groups, namely Normal group, femoral head separation group, and femoral head separation with growth plate lacerations group, and then carried out a comparative study. The results showed that the liver function (alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase) and lipid metabolism (high-density lipoprotein and trig

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the influence of diet-induced obesity on IL-6 deficiency-induced bone remodeling abnormality. Seven-week-old IL-6(-/-) mice and their wild type (WT) littermates were fed a standard diet (SD) or high-fat diet (HFD) for 25 weeks. Lipid formation and bone metabolism in mice tibiae were investigated by histochemical analysis. Both IL-6(-/-) and WT mice fed the HFD showed notable body weight gain, thickened cortical bones, and adipose accumulation in the bone marrow. Notably, the HFD normalized the bone phenotype of IL-6(-/-) mice to that of their WT counterpart,

Longitudinal bone growth is the result of endochondral bone formation which takes place in the growth plate. The rate of chondrocyte proliferation and hypertrophy, vascular invasion with the formation of primary ossification centers and cartilage replacement by bone tissue are all important processes required for normal growth. We have shown a role for the PI3K signaling pathway in chondrocyte hypertrophy and bone growth in tibia explant cultures. In this current study, we aimed to investigate the role of Akt1, an important target of PI3K, in endochondral ossification. Akt1 KO mice showed redu

We investigated bone-tendon (27 sites) and bone-ligament (12 sites) interfaces in six pairs of crocodile limbs and girdles under light microscopy. These crocodilian interfaces often included a direct, unmediated insertion in which the tendon or ligament fibers inserted directly into the bone itself without fibrocartilaginous mediation. This was quite different from the usual direct insertion known in mammals and lizards. Fibrocartilaginous tissue at the bone-tendon interface is generally believed to protect tendon fibers against shear stress. Other types of insertions were found in the crocodi

This technique presents a workflow that designs the custom surgical guide to cover a trephine bur using simple slicer software and three-dimensional (3D) printing to perform the semilunar technique. This method in autogenous bone grafting surgery harvests a thin layer of cortical bone in the donor site with a trephine bur. Its biologically favorable, round shape can be used as a shell to reconstruct the ridge with a 3D contour acceptable for future implant placement. A 78-year-old female patient required vertical and horizontal bone grafting for future implant placement due to the infection ca

BACKGROUND: Plate and locked intramedullary nailing for humeral fractures are golden standard procedure, but the humerus is a nonweight-bearing bone and can tolerate a larger range of acceptable alignment. We believe the elastic stable intramedullary nails (ESINs) can provide enough relative stability for humeral shaft fractures in certain adult patients.
METHODS: There are four new indications for using ESINs: (1) patient could not tolerate a sugar-tong splint but was a high risk for general anesthesia, (2) intramedullary canal narrowing (<7 mm), (3) long spiral or oblique fracture over the

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this prospective, multicentre study was to evaluate the influence of local bone mineral density (BMD) on the rate of mechanical failure after locking plate fixation of closed distal radius fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between June 2007 and April 2010, 230 women and 19 men with a mean age of 67 years were enrolled. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry measurements for BMD of the contralateral distal radius were made at 6 weeks post-surgery. Follow-up evaluations at 6 weeks, 3 months and 1 year included wrist mobility and strength as well as standard radiographs. Any l

Severe hyperhomocysteinemia, as seen in classic homocystinuria, is associated with several skeletal malformations and osteopenia. Moreover, hyperhomocysteinemia during pregnancy has been associated with multiple developmental defects in the fetus. This study was undertaken to determine whether offspring of hyperhomocysteinemic mothers have demonstrable changes in bone volume and the epiphyseal growth plate. Ten adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to the control or experimental group. The experimental group received 100 mg/kg/day of homocysteine in their drinking water for 3

PURPOSE: Severely hypoplastic phalanges and metacarpals in symbrachydactyly are often associated with a delay or failure of primary ossification evident by radiography at birth. However, little is known about the ossification pattern and further growth of severely hypoplastic bones in symbrachydactyly. To clarify this mechanism, we observed development during ossification of the hypoplastic phalanges in brachypodism mice (which carry functional null mutations of growth differentiation factor 5 and exhibit hypoplastic phalanges) as a model of the bone hypoplasia in symbrachydactyly.
METHODS: F

Microvascular free tissue transfer has provided a variety of methods of restoring vascularized bone and soft tissue to difficult defects created by tumor resection and trauma. Over 7 years, 26 patients have undergone 28 free flaps for mandibular reconstruction, 15 for primary squamous cell carcinoma of the floor of the mouth or tongue, 7 for recurrent tumor, and 6 for other reasons [lymphangioma (1), infection (1), gunshot wound (1), and osteoradionecrosis (3)]. Primary reconstruction was performed in 19 cases and secondary in 9. All repairs were composite flaps including 12 scapula, 5 radial

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic fractures around the knee (TKAPF) often occur in old patients with concomitant diseases. Like any other fragility fracture, the aim of TKAPF management should be a patient-specific strategy considering clinical factors and associated comorbidities. The aim of the present study was to analyse if, in selected groups of unfit patients, osteosynthesis alone without revision even in cases of implant loosening (SOFCOT type 2 and 3) could be a good compromise to avoid invasive surgery and to reduce the mortality rate with reasonable results. The hypothesis was that for TKAP

Bony exostoses, or osteochondromas, are benign bone tumors that usually develop at growth plates during the growth period. Large exostosis can compress nearby vascular structures, causing occlusion, perforation, or pseudoaneurysm. We report a case of a middle-aged woman with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and atherosclerotic risk factors who had an unusual presentation of chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) of the left leg combined with a flare-up of RA. She was found to have an occluded left popliteal artery due to a large femur exostosis. An uncomplicated left femoral-to-popliteal bypass was
