The laboratory colonization of African simuliids would facilitate critical work on many aspects of their biology and onchocerciasis vectors could be studied away from natural breeding-sites. In addition to a review of the literature of past achievements in this field, the authors' own studies are described: these centred on the Simulium damnosum and S. neavei complexes because they include vectors of human onchocerciasis. Other species studied included vectors of Onchocerca gutturosa and avian Haematozoa. Techniques for collecting the various developmental stages of African simuliids are discu…

An 8-year-old mixed breed dog, was referred for lethargy, abdominal discomfort, hematemesis, and melena. Abdominal ultrasound revealed mineralization of the "right splenic vein" with collateral spiraling and a suspected splenic duplication. Computed tomography confirmed the duplication along with torsion of the splenic pedicle. Exploratory laparotomy confirmed the splenic torsion associated with congestion of the gastrointestinal vessels, indicative of a chronic onset of secondary regional splenic vein hypertension.

A horse allergic rider completed 60 riding lessons on Curly Horses within six months. This rider has become clinically tolerant to normal horse breeds within this time. This case may indicate that riding and brushing ABCR Curly Horses after 60 riding hours facilitates tolerance induction. Our data indicate that this could be a valid alternative to the common recommendation to strictly avoid horse riding.

Aspergillus ochraceus, a widely distributed filamentous fungus, was isolated and identified by cytology and culture as the cause of unilateral ceruminous purulent otitis in a 4-year-old male mixed-breed dog. The pathogenic role of the fungal isolate was confirmed by a good response to antifungal therapy and the absence of other pathogens. No underlying diseases were identified and the dog recovered after 3 weeks of therapy with oral itraconazole and topical miconazole.

Multiple endocrine neoplasms, including an insulinoma, bilateral adrenocortical adenocarcinomas and an aortic paraganglioma, were diagnosed after euthanasia in a 12-year-old spayed female dog of mixed breed with a history of progressive anorexia, vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, polyuria and polydipsia, regenerative anaemia and hypoglycaemia. The clinical, gross pathological, microscopical, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural findings were consistent with the human syndrome of multiple endocrine neoplasia.

The technique of experimental operative procedures in the distal area of the brain stem in the reach of the fourth brain ventricle is described in rabbits. The experiments were carried out in 25 rabbits (breed great-chinchilla, body-weight 4.5 to 5.25 kg) of both sexes. All manipulations were performed in general anesthesia. The best methods for endotracheal intubation of the rabbit and for the surgical technique in the floor of the fourth ventricle were searched.

Canine mast cell tumors are among the most common skin neoplasms in dogs and exhibit highly variable biological behavior. Several factors have been associated with their development and prognosis, including breed, body size, and histological grade; however, the influence of neutering status, particularly age at neutering, on the odds of tumor diagnosis and survival remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate clinical features, factors associated with diagnosis, and survival outcomes in dogs with mast cell tumors (MCTs), with emphasis on neutering status and age at neutering. A retrospective

BACK GROUND: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) poses a significant economic threat to livestock producers because of its highly contagious nature. This study aimed to determine FMD seroprevalence and identify associated risk factors in cattle across districts surrounding the Massif Bale Mountain in Ethiopia. From May to June 2024, a cross-sectional study was conducted in which 1073 cattle serum samples were collected and tested for FMD virus nonstructural protein (NSP) antibodies. Multivariate logistic regression was employed to identify factors associated with seroprevalence, including sex, age, b

Virtual fencing (VF) is a promising technology for pasture management, but its successful implementation depends on understanding the factors that influence the animal learning. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the significance of individual animal factors that affect the behavioural and performance-based learning process in cattle during a VF training period. We analysed collar-derived performance data from 171 mixed-age Angus and Salers breed cattle over a 12-day training trial. Learning performance was primarily measured by daily success ratio (SR) and confidence ratio (CR). Lea

Innate immune-related genes are shaped by strong selection pressures due to host-pathogen co-evolution, yet the evolutionary trajectory of cathelicidin antimicrobial (AMP) gene is poorly understood. Despite their central role in innate immunity, the extent of sequence diversification of myeloid cathelicidins across livestock subspecies remains unclear. Present study investigated inter-breed and inter-species level sequence variations of myeloid cathelicidin gene in Vechur cattle (Bos taurus indicus), Ankamali pig (Sus scrofa domesticus), Naked neck chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) and compar

OBJECTIVES: To identify risk factors associated with periodontal disease in pet dogs, based on detailed owner-reported demographic, health and behaviour survey data.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 12,753 pet owners completed a one-time questionnaire that included questions concerning their pet's demographics and health.
RESULTS: Overall periodontal disease prevalence was 50.5% (95% CI 0.50 to 0.51). Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified age, breed characteristics, oral diagnoses, symptoms and oral care habits as key risk factors for periodontal disease. Age was strongly as

AIM: Injuries of the Manus and Pes, including the carpus and tarsus are a primary cause of lameness and subsequent economic loss in the camel industry. This retrospective study aimed to determine the prevalence of manus and pes lesions, including the carpus, and tarsus and evaluate the diagnostic utility of radiography in confirming clinical diagnoses of these conditions in dromedary camels. Furthermore, it investigated the risk factors associated with these injuries in the Qassim region.
METHODS: A total of 222 dromedary camels of various ages, sexes, and breeds were presented to the Univers

Structural variants (SVs) are a type of mutations in animal genomes that have shown their role in the process of domestication. An insertion/ deletion of 579 bp SV in intron 21 of PIK3C3 gene in Xiang pigs was detected by genome resequencing method in our previous study. Phosphoinositide-3-kinase, class III (PIK3C3), is a critical regulator of autophagy, essential for cellular homeostasis, pathogen clearance, and immune modulation. The aim of this study was to investigate the polymorphism of intron 21 of the PIK3C3 gene of Xiang pigs and its effect on PIK3C3 expression. The polymorphism of SV

In small, closed populations such as the Lipizzan horse, maintaining genetic diversity while limiting inbreeding is a key challenge in conservation breeding. The Lipizzan is an indigenous Slovenian breed with a small population and restricted gene flow from other subpopulations. Inbreeding is traditionally monitored with pedigree-based coefficients, but these often underestimate realised autozygosity, particularly when pedigree depth is limited. This study compared pedigree-based inbreeding (F_PED) with four genomic estimators (F_HOM, F_ROH, F_HBD, F_GRM) in 329 Slovenian Lipizzan horses genot…

Aortic body paragangliomas (ABPs) are the most common heart base tumor in dogs; however, descriptions of their computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings are lacking. Although generally considered benign, ABPs can present as malignant neoplasms with local invasion and metastasis. The objectives of this study were to describe the CT and MRI features of confirmed benign and malignant ABPs and identify significant features associated with malignancy. Forty-four dogs with 43 CTs and 3 MRIs were included. Most (68%) dogs were males, and 48% were brachycephalic breeds. At
