BACKGROUND: Basophils are blood leukocytes constituting less than 1% of leukocytes. They share morphological and functional similarities with mast cells, but recent studies indicate that basophils play non-redundant roles via the release of several cytokines and lipid mediators, as well as functioning as antigen presenting cells. The various effects of ageing on the auditory system, collectively termed presbycusis, are being studied across a wide range of animal species, including humans. GH3 cells, a PRL-secreting rat pituitary tumor cell line, are sensitive to bromocriptine, and provide a useful model for the present studies. A study was made on Langerhans cells (LC) in the dermal lesions of leprosy after epicutaneous application of 2:4 dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) to the lesion. LC were quantitated with OKT6 monoclonal antibody and indirect immunofluorescence. A depletion or reduction in the numbers of CD1+ epidermal LC was observed at both 4 and 24 hours after the application of DNCB in the lesions of both tuberculoid and lepromatous leprosy, compared to untreated lesions.

A study of mast cell content of the small intestinal mucosa in children with celiac disease is presented. Twenty patients with true celiac disease were studied and compared with 7 patients with transient gluten intolerance and 20 normal control patients. In healthy children we found (mean +/- SE) 142.5 +/- 16.4 mast cells/mm2. In children with active celiac disease, only 40.1 +/- 19.5 cells were found. Elective regional lymph-node dissection was performed on 98 patients with clinical Stage I cutaneous malignant melanoma and 26 of them were found to have microscopic evidence of metastases. The histology of the primary lesions was reviewed in order to find possible prognostic parameters that would allow prediction of nodal involvement. Gastric mucosal mast cell population was studied following sub-diaphragmatic vagotomy in albino rats, 6 and 12 h after pylorus ligation. Sub-diaphragmatic vagotomy significantly increased the gastric mucosal mast cell population in both 6 and 12 h groups, the increase being more in the latter. The results suggest that the vagal impulses act on the gastric mucosal mast cells causing their degranulation. Following vagotomy the contents stay bound within the mast cells. The ultrastructure of the Type I cells in rat carotid bodies was studied after treatment with 5-OH-Dopa and L-Dopa. Type I cells from the L-Dopa treated rats were also analysed by morphometric methods. The ascending colon of the guinea pig was cut serially and stained with the periodic-acid-Schiff-hematoxylin method.
