Streptococcus-mutans and Porphyromonas-gingivalis adhesion to glazed/polished surfaces of CAD/CAM restorations.

PURPOSE: Dental restorations fabricated using CAD/CAM require modification/adjustment before cementation. Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans) and Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.gingivalis) are prevalent bacterial species that may adhere to these materials and can cause caries, gingivitis/periodontitis. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the bacterial adherence of S.mutans and P.gingivalis to five different kinds of modern CAD/CAM restorative materials with different compositions following chairside finishing/polishing and glazing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Specimens (N = 75) from five t…

Comparison of the Effectiveness of Fluoride Varnish and Fluoride-Releasing Adhesives in Preventing and Managing White Spot Lesions During Fixed Orthodontic Treatment, and Evaluation of Patient-Reported Outcomes: A Randomised Controlled Trial 1 Year After Debonding.

BACKGROUND: White spot lesions (WSL) may appear on teeth during fixed orthodontic treatment. Professionally administered topical fluorides play a key role in preventing such lesions. However, the evidence for their long-term efficacy and patient-reported outcomes is limited. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to evaluate the efficacy of topical fluorides (varnish vs. adhesive) in reducing the incidence of white spot lesions (WSLs) during and after 1 year of fixed orthodontic treatment. The secondary objectives were patient-related outcomes, including perception of WSLs and adverse effects o

Reliability of the dye penetration studies.

The purpose of this study was to compare the classical dye-penetration method to a dye-extraction method, with a fluid-filtration method as control. Forty teeth were prepared with a ProFile device and divided into four groups (n = 10 per group) according to the sealer used for the lateral condensation: Pulp Canal Sealer, Sealapex, AH Plus, and Ketac-Endo. The apical seal was evaluated on the same teeth with all three methods, successively: a fluid-filtration method, a dye-penetration method with 2% methylene blue, and a new method where the roots were dissolved in 65% nitric acid to extract th

Capping the inflamed pulp under different clinical conditions.

BACKGROUND: A great deal of controversy exists regarding the reliability of capping the inflamed pulp. In particular, the use of calcium hydroxide as a capping agent has come into question. In this study, hard tissue barrier formation after inflamed pulps were capped directly or after partial pulpotomy was compared with calcium hydroxide or bonded resin and with no additional seal or an IRM surface seal. Seventy teeth in five dogs were used. Ten untreated teeth were used as negative controls. In 60 teeth, pulpal inflammation was induced by preparing a cavity close to the pulp and sealing a cot

Effect of connector design on fracture resistance in all-ceramic fixed partial dentures for mandibular incisor region.

Yttrium tetragonal zirconia polycrystal frameworks were prepared for all-ceramic fixed partial dentures (FPDs) for the mandibular incisor region. The effects of the cross-sectional area and morphology of the connector on its strength were evaluated by fracture tests. Nine types of zirconia framework for a 3-unit FPD for a defect of 1 mandibular central incisor were prepared, each differing in cross-sectional area and morphology. Fracture tests were performed by loading until fracture using a universal testing machine. Fracture load was determined and fracture site examined. Significant differe

Fluoride released from orthodontic bonding agents alters the enamel surface and inhibits enamel demineralization in vitro.

In this study, we examined two fluoride-releasing orthodontic agents in respect to fluoride release, enamel demineralization inhibition, as well as alterations observed on the enamel surface after their use. Fluoride release was found to occur in the highest concentrations within the first 24 hours for both materials examined. After this period, a dramatic decline in fluoride release was observed in both adhesives, and after 90 days no fluoride was detectable. Both fluoride-releasing materials showed significant differences on enamel demineralization around the brackets when compared with a co

Bond versus rebond strengths of three luting agents for resin-bonded fixed partial dentures.

Recently, new luting materials have been claimed to have adhesion to metal and tooth structure. This study determined if rebonding the specimens affected their tensile bond strength. Ten samples each of Rexillium III metal cylinders (12 x 6.3 mm) were bonded and rebonded with Comspan Panavia and Super-bond materials. The film thickness was controlled with a micrometer device at 20 microns. The samples were stored for 24 hours in deionized water at 37 degrees C and were then thermocycled for 24 hours and tested for tensile failure on an Instron testing machine. A stereomicroscope was used to de

Periprosthetic Hip Joint Infection Involving Fusobacterium nucleatum With Subsequent Isolation of Acinetobacter baumannii: A Case Report.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a serious complication following total hip arthroplasty and is most commonly caused by Gram-positive organisms. Infections involving anaerobic bacteria or multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens are rare and particularly challenging to manage. We report a case of periprosthetic hip infection in a female patient in whom Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) was initially isolated, followed by Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) later in the treatment course. Initial management with debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) was unsucce

Ministromatolite Modular Reef Framework, ~1.5 Ga, Yesanpo, North China.

Earth's earliest known framework reef, ~1500-million-year-old Yesanpo Mound in the Wumishan Formation, North China, consists of columns and cones built by innumerable conjoined originally aragonitic ministromatolites, each ≤ 2 cm wide. The Mound contains numerous irregular, decimetric, cavities. These are now filled with carbonate mud, giant ooids, and originally aragonitic marine cement. The role of ministromatolites in constructing this modular framework very broadly resembles that of polyps in present-day scleractinian coral colonies. Yesanpo Mound preserves geochemical signatures and trace

[Osteomyelitis in diabetic foot: reconstruction with autologous bone graft].

Moderate to severe infections in the diabetic foot (DF), such as osteomyelitis, frequently require surgical intervention and prolonged antibiotic therapy. Amputation is often unavoidable, with high morbidity and mortality rates in the initial years. Bone resection can lead to deformities and loss of foot function, introducing further complications. This report presents a case of a 45-year-old patient with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and osteomyelitis in the first ray, managed through surgical debridement, an antibiotic-loaded cement spacer, and vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) to control infect

MIS technique for separation surgery in lumbar spine metastatic disease.

Around 40% of cancer patients present with spinal metastases (SM), the lumbar spine being the second most involved site (15%-30%) after the thoracic (60%-80%). Since the development of separation surgery, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has increasingly been applied to approach SM, mirroring benefits yielded in the degenerative realm. Moreover, preoperative embolization potentially enhances local control for certain radioresistant histologies. Carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK hardware reduces image artifact, facilitating more accurate follow-up and radiotherapeutic planning. Additionally, short-s
