Genetic etiology of hereditary hearing loss in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

The past 30 years have seen an exponential growth concerning the identification of genes and variants responsible for hereditary hearing loss (HL) worldwide. This has led to a huge gain in our understanding of molecular mechanisms of hearing and deafness, which improved diagnosis for populations with hereditary HL. Many communities around the world, especially in the Middle East and North Africa, have a high prevalence of consanguineous marriages. Congenital monogenic conditions, such as recessive HL, are more common in these populations due to high consanguinity rates. Many studies have shown…

[Analysis of OTOGL gene variants in a child with moderate non-syndromic hearing loss].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the genetic basis for a child with moderate non-syndromic hearing loss. METHODS: Next generation sequencing was carried out for the child. Co-segregation of the phenotype and candidate variants was verified among his family members by Sanger sequencing. RESULTS: The child was found to harbor biallelic variants of the OTOGL gene, namely c.2773C>T (p.Arg925Ter) and c.2826C>G (p.Tyr942Ter), which were respectively inherited from his phenotypically normal father and mother. Both variants were predicted to cause premature termination of protein synthesis and be disease causi

Perceived Listening Difficulty in the Classroom, Not Measured Noise Levels, Is Associated With Fatigue in Children With and Without Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine if classroom noise levels and perceived listening difficulty were related to fatigue reported by children with and without hearing loss. METHOD: Measures of classroom noise and reports of classroom listening difficulty were obtained from 79 children (ages 6-12 years) at two time points on two different school days. Forty-four children had mild to moderately severe hearing loss in at least one ear. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to evaluate if measured noise levels, perceived listening difficulty, hearing status, language abilities

Brain plasticity and hearing disorders.

Permanently changed sensory stimulation can modify functional connectivity patterns in the healthy brain and in pathology. In the pathology case, these adaptive modifications of the brain are referred to as compensation, and the subsequent configurations of functional connectivity are called compensatory plasticity. The variability and extent of auditory deficits due to the impairments in the hearing system determine the related brain reorganization and rehabilitation. In this review, we consider cross-modal and intra-modal brain plasticity related to bilateral and unilateral hearing loss and

The Acquisition of Acoustic Cues to Onset and Coda Voicing Contrasts by Preschoolers With Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: Children with hearing loss (HL), including those with hearing aids (HAs) and cochlear implants (CIs), often have difficulties contrasting words like " b each" versus " p each" and "do g " versus "do ck " due to challenges producing systematic voicing contrasts. Even when acoustic contrasts are present, these may not be perceived as such by others. This can cause miscommunication, leading to poor self-esteem and social isolation. Acoustic evidence is therefore needed to determine if these children have established distinct voicing categories before entering school and if mispercept

Reverberation Degrades Pitch Perception but Not Mandarin Tone and Vowel Recognition of Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: The primary goal of this study was to investigate the effects of reverberation on Mandarin tone and vowel recognition of cochlear implant (CI) users and normal-hearing (NH) listeners. To understand the performance of Mandarin tone recognition, this study also measured participants' pitch perception and the availability of temporal envelope cues in reverberation. DESIGN: Fifteen CI users and nine NH listeners, all Mandarin speakers, were asked to recognize Mandarin single-vowels produced in four lexical tones and rank harmonic complex tones in pitch with different reverberation tim

Modeling the effects of age and hearing loss on concurrent vowel scores.

A difference in fundamental frequency (F0) between two vowels is an important segregation cue prior to identifying concurrent vowels. To understand the effects of this cue on identification due to age and hearing loss, Chintanpalli, Ahlstrom, and Dubno [(2016). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 140, 4142-4153] collected concurrent vowel scores across F0 differences for younger adults with normal hearing (YNH), older adults with normal hearing (ONH), and older adults with hearing loss (OHI). The current modeling study predicts these concurrent vowel scores to understand age and hearing loss effects. The YNH

New-born Hearing Screening Programmes in 2020: CODEPEH Recommendations.

Programmes for early detection of congenital hearing loss have been successfully implemented mainly in developed countries, after overcoming some conceptual errors argued against their implementation and some criticism of their efficacy. However, some difficulties and weaknesses are still identified in these programmes: the detection of late-onset hearing loss and the percentage of children who did not pass the screening and did not complete the process of diagnosis and treatment, these being cases that are lost in the process. The purpose of this Document is to analyse these problems to deter

Reading and Theory of Mind in Adolescents with Cochlear Implant.

Previous research has shown a possible link between reading comprehension and theory of mind (ToM), but these findings are unclear in adolescents with cochlear implants (CI). In the present study, reading comprehension and ToM were assessed in adolescents with CI and the relation between both skills was also studied. Two sessions were performed on two groups of adolescents aged between 12 and 16 years of age (36 adolescents with CI and 54 participants with typical hearing, TH). They were evaluated by means of a standardized reading battery, a false belief task, and Faux Pas stories. The result

[Comparison of different measurements of the benefit in hearing aid fitting using the APHAB].

BACKGROUND: Questionnaires measuring the subjective outcome of hearing aid benefit are used in diagnostics of hearing loss additionally. Since 2012, the APHAB is part of the quality agreement for statutory insured patients in hearing aid fitting. Actually, calculating the benefit by the given formula (improvement quotient A) causes distortion by patients with negative results. In general, these dues to misinterpretation of the results. In this study, we proposed two alternative ways of calculation and compared the results together. METHODS: Using the data of 6861 hearing aid fitted patients f

Gesture, communication, and adult acquired hearing loss.

Nonverbal communication, specifically hand and arm movements (commonly known as gesture), has long been recognized and explored as a significant element in human interaction as well as potential compensatory behavior for individuals with communication difficulties. The use of gesture as a compensatory communication method in expressive and receptive human communication disorders has been the subject of much investigation. Yet within the context of adult acquired hearing loss, gesture has received limited research attention and much remains unknown about patterns of nonverbal behaviors in conve

Saccular function evolution related to cochlear implantation in hearing impaired children.

Vestibular sensorial input is essential for psychomotor development of the very small children. In consequence, possible vestibular impairment induced by cochlear implantation in deaf children could affect the balance and walking learning process. Some of cochlear implanted children can present congenital vestibular deficit. The anatomical and embryological relation between auditory and vestibular system explains why congenital neurosensorial hearing loss may associate vestibular impairment. The cochlear implant surgery presents a vestibular lesion risk. Bilateral vestibulopathy, as it appears

Effect of level on spectral-ripple detection threshold for listeners with normal hearing and hearing loss.

This study investigated the effect of presentation level on spectral-ripple detection for listeners with and without sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Participants were 25 listeners with normal hearing and 25 listeners with SNHL. Spectral-ripple detection thresholds (SRDTs) were estimated at three spectral densities (0.5, 2, and 4 ripples per octave, RPO) and three to four sensation levels (SLs) (10, 20, 40, and, when possible, 60 dB SL). Each participant was also tested at 90 dB sound pressure level (SPL). Results indicate that level affected SRDTs. However, the effect of level depended on r

Development of Sign Language Motion Recognition System for Hearing-Impaired People Using Electromyography Signal.

Sign languages are developed around the world for hearing-impaired people to communicate with others who understand them. Different grammar and alphabets limit the usage of sign languages between different sign language users. Furthermore, training is required for hearing-intact people to communicate with them. Therefore, in this paper, a real-time motion recognition system based on an electromyography signal is proposed for recognizing actual American Sign Language (ASL) hand motions for helping hearing-impaired people communicate with others and training normal people to understand the sign
