A two-year retrospective survey in southern Ethiopia revealed that 49 amputations had been performed, 25 of which were for gangrene following tight splintage applied by traditional bone setters. A prospective study was designed in order to determine to what extent antibiotics are used in treating community-acquired infections and their costs. Between February and July 2001 a total of 43,011 prescriptions from a representative sample of pharmacies in the city of Denizli (Turkey) were evaluated during the study period. Antibiotics accounted for 16.4 % of total prescriptions and 30.8% of the market value of drugs. Penicillins (49.7%), followed by cephalosporins (17.3%), macrolides (9.5%), and aminoglycosides (7.6%) were the most frequently prescribed antibiotics during the study period.

The HIV-1 plague continues unabatedly across sub-Saharan Africa. In Botswana and Swaziland, nearly 40% of the entire adult population is already infected. No current program is capable of slowing the advancing tide. An effective vaccine and widespread treatment are years, if not, decades away. In this most urgent situation, I propose that pre-exposure chemoprophylaxis be studied as a means to reduce the spread of HIV-1 among at-risk individuals.

Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia with conventional oral preparations is handicapped by unpredictable haematological response in addition to potential for irritating gastrointestinal adverse events. Iron polymaltose complex (IPC), a novel oral iron formulation with better absorbability, predictable haematinic response and less side effects was compared with oral ferrous fumarate in 100 female patients with documented iron deficiency anaemia.
