Diet in neurogenic bowel management: A viewpoint on spinal cord injury.

The aim of this review is to offer dietary advice for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) and neurogenic bowel dysfunction. With this in mind, we consider health conditions that are dependent on the level of lesion including skeletal muscle atrophy, autonomic dysreflexia and neurogenic bladder. In addition, SCI is often associated with a sedentary lifestyle, which increases risk for osteoporosis and diseases associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, including cardiovascular and chronic kidney diseases. The Mediterranean diet, along with exercise and dietary supplements, has been su

Berry fruits modulate kidney dysfunction and urine metabolome in Dahl salt-sensitive rats.

Berries are rich sources of (poly)phenols which have been associated with the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in animal models and in human clinical trials. Recently, a berry enriched diet was reported to decrease blood pressure and attenuate kidney disease progression on Dahl salt-sensitive rats. However, the relationship between kidney function, metabolism and (poly)phenols was not evaluated. We hypothesize that berries promote metabolic alterations concomitantly with an attenuation of the progression of renal disease. For that, kidney and urinary metabolomic changes induced by the ber

Effects of a probiotic intervention on Escherichia coli and high-fat diet-induced intestinal microbiota imbalance.

Obesity is often associated with intestinal microbiota imbalance and increased Gram-negative bacteria characterized by higher endotoxin levels. Therefore, a study on the joint effects of a high-fat diet and Gram-negative bacteria prechallenge might provide further information on the interactive effects of intestinal microbiota and obesity as well as the effects of a probiotic intervention on these processes. This study focused on the joint effects of a high-fat diet and Escherichia coli on mouse inflammatory cytokines, intestinal microbiota, hepatic pathological changes, and the alleviating ca

Intestinal Microbiota Protects against MCD Diet-Induced Steatohepatitis.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease in western countries, with a continuously rising incidence. Gut-liver communication and microbiota composition have been identified as critical drivers of the NAFLD progression. Hence, it has been shown that microbiota depletion can ameliorate high-fat diet or western-diet induced experimental Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). However, its functional implications in the methionine-choline dietary model, remain incompletely understood. Here, we investigated the physiological relevance of gut microbiota in methionine-

Self-reported eating behaviors of military recruits are associated with body mass index at military accession and change during initial military training.

Eating behaviors such as eating fast and ignoring internal satiety cues are associated with overweight/obesity, and may be influenced by environmental factors. This study examined changes in those behaviors, and associations between those behaviors and BMI, cardiometabolic biomarkers, and diet quality in military recruits before and during initial military training (IMT), an environment wherein access to food is restricted. Eating rate and reliance on internal satiety cues were self-reported, and BMI, body fat, cardiometabolic biomarkers, and diet quality were measured in 1389 Army, Air Force

Nutritional 1C Imbalance, B12 Tissue Accumulation, and Pregnancy Outcomes: An Experimental Study in Rats.

Vitamin B12 deficiency during pregnancy has been associated with poor fetal outcome. Here we investigate the influence of a one-carbon (1C) imbalanced diet (low B12, high folate, high methionine) on maternal B12 status, fetal outcome, B12 distribution, and on the 24-h distribution of synthetic cyano-B12 (CN-B12) and natural hydroxo-B12 (HO-B12). Female Wistar rats were mated while on a 1C balanced (n = 12) or imbalanced diet starting two weeks (n = 10) or four weeks (n = 9) prior to pregnancy and continuing throughout pregnancy. At gestation day 18 (out of 21), all rats received an oral dose o

Congenital muscle dystrophy and diet consistency affect mouse skull shape differently.

The bones of the mammalian skull respond plastically to changes in masticatory function. However, the extent to which muscle function affects the growth and development of the skull, whose regions have different maturity patterns, remains unclear. Using muscle dissection and 3D landmark-based geometric morphometrics we investigated the effect of changes in muscle function established either before or after weaning, on skull shape and muscle mass in adult mice. We compared temporalis and masseter mass and skull shape in mice with a congenital muscle dystrophy (mdx) and wild type (wt) mice fed o

Sodium restriction modulates innate immunity and prevents cardiac remodeling in a rat model of metabolic syndrome.

In the view of the relationships between excessive sodium intake, immunity and target organ damage, we hypothesized that reduction in dietary sodium would be beneficial in the prevention of cardiac alterations through a restrained local immunity response in a rat model of metabolic syndrome. Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a 60% fructose diet with either a normal sodium (0.64% NaCl) or a low sodium content (<0.01% NaCl) for 8weeks. After 4weeks, rats were infused or not with angiotensin II (200ng·kg-1·min-1, sc) for 4weeks. Tail-cuff blood pressure was determined in conscious rats. Heart and left

Nopal feeding reduces adiposity, intestinal inflammation and shifts the cecal microbiota and metabolism in high-fat fed rats.

Nopal is a cactus plant widely consumed in Mexico that has been used in traditional medicine to aid in the treatment of type-2 diabetes. We previously showed that chronic consumption of dehydrated nopal ameliorated hepatic steatosis in obese (fa/fa) rats; however, description of the effects on other tissues is sparse. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of nopal cladode consumption on intestinal physiology, microbial community structure, adipose tissue, and serum biochemistry in diet-induced obese rats. Rats were fed either a normal fat (NF) diet or a HF diet containing

Fructose-derived advanced glycation end-products drive lipogenesis and skeletal muscle reprogramming via SREBP-1c dysregulation in mice.

Advanced Glycation End-Products (AGEs) have been recently related to the onset of metabolic diseases and related complications. Moreover, recent findings indicate that AGEs can endogenously be formed by high dietary sugars, in particular by fructose which is widely used as added sweetener in foods and drinks. The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of a high-fructose diet and the causal role of fructose-derived AGEs in mice skeletal muscle morphology and metabolism. C57Bl/6J mice were fed a standard diet (SD) or a 60% fructose diet (HFRT) for 12 weeks. Two subgroups of SD an

Time-dependent changes and association between liver free fatty acids, serum lipid profile and histological features in mice model of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Methionine-choline deficient (MCD) diet duration necessary for development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the dynamic of lipid profile and fatty acids are not completely established. The study examined dynamics and association between liver free fatty acids (FFA), serum lipid profile and liver morphological changes on MCD diet-induced NAFLD in mice. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice (n = 28) were divided into four groups (n = 7 per group): control: fed with standard chow, MCD diet-fed groups: 2, 4 or 6 weeks. After treatment, liver and blood samples were taken

High-fat feeding increases hepatic vitamin C synthesis and its circulatory mobilization in mice.

PURPOSE: Vitamin C (vitC) deficiency has been linked to obesity and increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Whereas humans are unable to synthesize vitC and therefore to compensate for increased turnover, we investigated whether mice--independent of dietary vitC--are able to modulate their vitC homeostasis during high-fat (HF) feeding. METHODS: Twenty-five male 5-week-old C57BL/6 mice were fed high- or low-fat diets for 14 weeks. An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed after 12 weeks of intervention. Terminal fasting plasma samples were analyzed for insulin,

Pasture v. standard dairy cream in high-fat diet-fed mice: improved metabolic outcomes and stronger intestinal barrier.

Dairy products derived from the milk of cows fed in pastures are characterised by higher amounts of conjugated linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid (ALA), and several studies have shown their ability to reduce cardiovascular risk. However, their specific metabolic effects compared with standard dairy in a high-fat diet (HFD) context remain largely unknown; this is what we determined in the present study with a focus on the metabolic and intestinal parameters. The experimental animals were fed for 12 weeks a HFD containing 20 % fat in the form of a pasture dairy cream (PDC) or a standard dairy cr

Maternal protein restriction leads to pancreatic failure in offspring: role of misexpressed microRNA-375.

The intrauterine environment of the fetus is a preeminent actor in long-term health. Indeed, mounting evidence shows that maternal malnutrition increases the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in progeny. Although the consequences of a disturbed prenatal environment on the development of the pancreas are known, the underlying mechanisms are poorly defined. In rats, restriction of protein during gestation alters the development of the endocrine pancreas and favors the occurrence of T2D later in life. Here we evaluate the potential role of perturbed microRNA (miRNA) expression in the decreased β-cell

Involvement of brain oxidation in the cognitive impairment in a triple transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease: noninvasive measurement of the brain redox state by magnetic resonance imaging.

Oxidative stress is considered to be related to the onset and/or progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but there is insufficient evidence of its role(s). In this study, we evaluated the relationships between the brain redox state and cognitive function using a triple transgenic mouse model of AD (3 × Tg-AD mouse). One group of 3 × Tg-AD mice started to receive an α-tocopherol-supplemented diet at 2 months of age and another group of 3 × Tg-AD mice was fed a normal diet. The levels of α-tocopherol, reduced glutathione, oxidized glutathione, and lipid peroxidation were decreased in the cerebr

Dietary methyl donor deficiency during pregnancy in rats shapes learning and anxiety in offspring.

Two important lines of research have enhanced our understanding of the molecular role of nutrition in influencing behavior. First, exposure to an adverse environment during early life can influence the long-term behavior of the offspring. Second, regulation of the nervous system development and functioning appears to involve epigenetic mechanisms that require a continuous supply of methyl group donors in food. We hypothesized that a maternal diet during pregnancy deficient in methyl donors (MDD) may lead to altered behavior in offspring through permanent changes in hippocampal DNA methylation.
