Urachal calculi: a case report and review of the literature.

A 59-year-old man presented with lower abdominal pain. Plain X-ray of the urinary tract revealed radio-opaque shadows in the suprapubic region. Cystogram and intravenous urography showed these shadows in relation to the anterior part of the bladder. On cystoscopy, a small opening leading to a sac was seen. This was excised and stones were retrieved. The histology of the excised mucosa confirmed inflamed urachus. Four years later the patient remains asymptomatic.

Associated carotid body tumour and pharyngeal pouch.

Paragangliomas are rare tumours which most commonly present as an asymptomatic neck mass. A small percentage of patients may have associated dysphagia. A 63-year-old male presented with a ten-month history of dysphagia. Physical examination revealed a pulsatile submandibular triangle neck mass. Computed tomography and angiography were diagnostic of a carotid body tumour. Barium swallow illustrated a hypopharyngeal pouch. He was treated by surgical excision of both lesions and cricopharyngeal myotomy. The simultaneous occurrence of both lesions has not been described before and highlights the n

Diverticulosis of the vermiform appendix in patients with cystic fibrosis.

This paper presents a study of diverticulosis of the vermiform appendix in patients with cystic fibrosis. The records of two hospitals were reviewed. A total of 39 autopsy specimens and 18 surgical specimens were obtained. Diverticulosis of the appendix was found in 14 per cent (eight of 57) of all appendices. Two of these cases also showed diverticulitis. These results stand in contrast to the incidence of diverticulosis of the appendix in the general population, which has been measured at 1 to 2 per cent in various reviews.

Intramural pseudodiverticulosis of the esophagus.

Intramural pseudodiverticulosis of the esophagus is a rare benign disease, developing most frequently in older males, but occurring in both sexes, at all ages. In some patients symptoms from early childhood suggest congenital origin. The characteristic appearance of "pinhead" outpouching from the lumen of the esophagus is seen with contrast esophagram. The major symptom is dysphagia with episodic exacerbations, often with foreign body lodgement. The pseudodiverticula are formed by abnormally dilated adnexal glands and ducts which lie in the submucosa of the esophagus. Secondary infection, most
