We have studied the interaction of viqualine, a 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) uptake inhibitor, with ethanol in 16 healthy men aged 20 to 34 years. The subjects were randomly assigned to receive ethanol dosed to maintain blood alcohol concentrations of 17-22 mmol.l-1 (n = 8) or orange juice (n = 8) on each of two test days one week apart and preceded, in random order, by 3 days of viqualine 75 mg bd or placebo. A system has been developed to collect and process clinical trial data in general practice using a hand-held computer in the patient's presence. It was based on a Psion Organiser II (model XP) computer using software produced for the trial. The major advantages are: (a) avoidance of protocol violations and other incorrect data entries; and (b) saving of time for investigators and company personnel. The present coding of symptoms was found to be the only major drawback, but this problem could be remedied for future studies.

We studied the effect of pretreatment with single doses of bromocriptine on the pattern of subjective and physiologic responses to single doses of intravenous (IV) cocaine. Using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, we measured plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) in 38 patients who were treated with either antilipid A antibody or a placebo for presumed gram-negative bacteremia. Sixteen of the 38 patients had positive blood cultures: 14 with gram-negative rods and 2 with Streptococcus pneumoniae. The Romanian product Silimarina (synonym Legalon) was administered in a randomized double-blind trial, to a group of 180 patients with chronic persistent hepatitis (CPH), chronic active hepatitis (CAH) and hepatic cirrhosis (HC). The trial lasted for 40 days. The results showed favourable effects similar with those obtained with other preparations produced by foreign drug industries. 175 patients with severe psoriasis of different types were treated with 10, 25, or 50 mg acitretin and compared with patients receiving 50 mg etretinate over a period of 8 weeks in a randomized, double-blind multicenter study in the Federal Republic of Germany. Traction therapy for low back pain with sciatica has been evaluated in a double blind study. 60 patients hospitalized for sciatica with or without signs of sensory or motor deficiency were randomized to 3 treatment groups: "placebo traction" (5 kg), "light traction" (15 kg) and "normal traction" (50 kg). The ability of a single oral 750-mg dose of ciprofloxacin to eradicate Neisseria meningitidis from persistent nasopharyngeal carriers was prospectively evaluated in a placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blinded study.
