Morphological and histopathological changes in placentas of pregnancies with intrauterine growth restriction.

AIM: The definition of fetal growth restriction (FGR) refers to the incapability of a fetus to achieve the appropriate estimated growth, with expected fetal weight below the 10th percentile calculated for its gestational age. Placental factors and hypoxemia are considered to be essential elements with influence on intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and fetal death. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the macroscopic and microscopic pathological findings regarding the placentas in pregnancies complicated by influence on IUGR. PATIENTS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study inclu

Congenital cataract - clinical and morphological aspects.

Congenital cataract is one of the main causes of blindness in newborns and children. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are about 14 million children suffering from congenital cataract. Our study is based on 82 children, males - 46 (56.1%) and females - 36 (43.9%), with congenital cataract operated in the same ophthalmological centre in Bucharest, Romania. Of the 82 patients, 49 (59.76%) had bilateral cataract and 33 (40.24%) unilateral cataract. Clinically, the most frequent was the total cataract, followed by lamellar, nuclear and cerulean. We employed nine surgical appr

Prenatal diagnosis of syndromic alobar holoprosencephaly associated with digynic triploidy fetus.

Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is a dramatic human brain malformation sequence with an extreme variable phenotypic spectrum and genetic heterogeneity, variable degree of severity and unknown etiology, in many cases. HPE is classified into syndromic, chromosomal, and non-syndromic, non-chromosomal. The most cases of HPE are syndromic. We present an atypical case of syndromic alobar HPE associated with digynic triploidy fetus, prenatally diagnosed, early at 18 weeks of gestation, by ultrasound (US) and complex genetic investigations. The US examination was performed with a specialized US machine, Gener

A fetus with an immature umbilical cord teratoma associated with exomphalos: case report and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the antenatal and pathological features of an immature umbilical cord teratoma associated with exomphalos, and to review the literature on this subject. CASE PRESENTATION: An abdominal wall defect, suspected to be an exomphalos, was identified during routine ultrasound examination performed at 13 weeks of gestation. The pregnancy was terminated. Fetopathological examination revealed an immature umbilical cord teratoma associated with exomphalos. Chromosomal microarray analysis was normal. CONCLUSIONS: Umbilical cord teratomas, albeit very rare, should be emphasized as

Prenatal findings and pregnancy outcome in fetuses with right and double aortic arch. A 10-year experience at a tertiary center.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to evaluate the accuracy of the prenatal diagnosis and the relation between the type of right aortic arch (RAA) with other intra- or extracardiac (EC) and chromosomal anomalies. METHODS: A retrospective, observational study was conducted between 2011-2020 in a Romanian tertiary center. All RAA cases, including double aortic arch (DAA), were extracted from the databases and studied thoroughly. RESULTS: We detected 18 RAA cases: five (27.78%) type I (mirror image, "V" type), 11 (61.12%) type II ("U" type), and two (11.10%) DAA cases. Heart anomalies were associated

Histopathological and immunohistochemical aspects of bone tissue in aseptic necrosis of the femoral head.

Femoral head osteonecrosis, also known as avascular necrosis, is a disease with a multifactorial etiology, characterized by a profound change of bone architecture, which leads to the diminishing of bone resistance and femoral head collapse. The main causes that lead to femoral head necrosis are represented by the decrease of local blood perfusion and increase of intraosseous pressure, because of an excessive development of adipose tissue in the areolas of the trabecular bone tissue in the femoral head. The histopathological and immunohistochemical (IHC) study performed by us showed that most o

Primary thyroid angiosarcoma in a non-endemic region - a rare case.

Thyroid angiosarcoma (AS) is a specific type of vascular tumor that arises from the endothelial cells, being highly aggressive, with increased recurrence rates and metastasis. It is characterized by positive endothelial markers and co-positive markers for cytokeratins and epithelial membrane antigen. We are describing the case of a 76-year-old patient who presented to the hospital for dyspnea and asthenia. The clinical and paraclinical investigations confirmed the presence of a right large thyroid nodule, which turned out positive at immunostaining for AS. Even if thyroid AS is a rare type of

Giant pleomorphic sarcoma of the tongue base - a cured clinical case report and literature review.

Pleomorphic sarcoma of the tongue base is an extremely rare pathology finding. Our review of current databases returned fewer than 10 articles available free full text on this subject. We review the current state of art management guidelines for this type of tumor. Our case presented surprisingly a favorable evolution despite the huge dimensions, the tumor type, and associated pathology. The patient received radiation therapy and oncological treatment followed by revision surgery consisting of partial glossectomy for the residual tumor. Histological examination of the operatory specimen showed

Successful management of spontaneous bone regeneration after jaws cystectomy using PRGF approach; case series.

In the jaws, the healing process of bone defects occurs differently compared with other anatomical sites where healing is done by the formation of scar tissue. This is due to physiological bone remodeling and continuous bone resorption and apposition. In the case of large cysts, there is an increased risk of postoperative infection due to the retraction of the blood clot on the bony walls. The use of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF), with or without autologous bone addition, for filling the cystic cavities is beneficial not only for its antimicrobial effect, but also due to simultaneously

Analysis of the distribution and expression of some tumor invasiveness markers in palate squamous cell carcinomas.

Oral cancer remains an important global health issue and despite recent diagnostic and therapeutic advances, it continues to have an unfavorable prognostic and decreased survival. Although palatal tumors represent one of the rarest locations of oral squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), they are among the most aggressive local tumors, leaving behind important morpho-functional disabilities. In order to explain such local aggressiveness, the present study aims to investigate the immunohistochemical expression in palate SCCs of some markers known to be involved in the process of tumor invasiveness, s

Comparative clinicopathological aspects of chronic tonsillitis and adenoiditis in children.

Chronic palatal and nasopharyngeal inflammations are common lesions in pediatric pathology, with major effects on children's development. The study included 34 cases of chronic tonsillitis and adenoiditis for which we quantified immunohistochemically and analyzed the distribution of inflammatory elements in the follicular, extrafollicular and epithelial compartments, in relation to the composite histological scores and the clinico-epidemiological profile of the lesions. The cases were more frequent under the age of 10, in female patients, coming from urban areas, with the diagnosis of tonsilli

Endocardial fibroelastosis and dilated cardiomyopathy - the past and future of the interface between histology and genetics.

Endocardial fibroelastosis (EFE) signifies the pathological process by which collagen and elastin are focally or diffuse deposited in the endocardium of the left ventricle. The new layer causes left ventricular dysfunction sometimes with fulminant progression to heart failure. EFE is a major component in many congenital heart abnormalities but can also occur in the absence of heart malformations, either as a primary process or in response to cardiac injury. The endothelial-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) abnormalities seem to be main pathogenic factor in fibroelastosis development. The "gold st

Predictors of early and sustained virological response of viral hepatitis C.

Due to complex interplay between host and viral factors, pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is considered a challenging issue. Infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is not confined only to liver but can induce disturbances in many other organs and systems. Our primary aim for this study was to evaluate biological response rates and sustained virological response (SVR) in patients diagnosed with CHC, treated with Interferon-alpha (IFN-α), Pegylated (PEG)-IFN-α2a or -α2b plus Ribavirin. The second aim of the study was the identification of predictive factors for a favorable response to a

Matrix metalloproteinases expression in lentigo maligna∕lentigo maligna melanoma - a review of the literature and personal experience.

Cutaneous melanoma is the most aggressive type of skin cancer, with high invasive potential. Lentigo maligna melanoma (LMM) is a relatively rare type, accounting for about 10% of all melanomas, while the most common subtype of melanoma on the face, typically on chronically sun-exposed skin of elderly people. Its in situ stage is lentigo maligna (LM). During the process of transformation from LM to LMM, tumor cells secrete or induce the release from neighboring cells of large amounts of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that degrade the extracellular matrix. Some MMPs, as MMP3 and MMP9 expressed
