Electrical activity of the reticular formation during aversive and appetitive conditioning in rats.

Evoked potentials (EP) to a conditioned stimulus (CS) were recorded from several parts of the reticular formation (RF), the midbrain central gray (CG), the occipital cortex (OC), the basolateral amygdala and the ventrobasal thalamus during appetitive and aversive classical conditionings in rats. In addition, single unit activity to rewarding CS (+) and punishing CS (-) in a single discriminative classical conditioning was recorded from RF, OC, CG and the tectum. In the EP study, peak-to-peak (p-p) amplitudes, especially of the pontine RF, increased in the initial phase of pre-conditioning, in …

Stress recognition in Mandarin Chinese: exploring auditory baselines and visual modulation using ERP.

This study aimed to determine the perceptual baseline for stress recognition-whether stress recognition relies on an internal baseline computed through online comparison within a sentence or an external baseline accumulated from prior acoustic experience-and to further examine whether this auditory baseline is modulated by the outcomes of internal cognitive processing. To achieve these goals, two event-related potential (ERP) experiments were designed. Experiment 1 employed a passive auditory oddball paradigm to compare ERP responses between unstressed and logically stressed conditions. The re

Pre-Neural Source of the Envelope-Following Response Revealed in Cases of Auditory Neuropathy.

OBJECTIVES: Complex stimuli such as two-tone stimuli (f 1 and f 2 ) elicit frequency-following responses that reflect phase-locking to the stimulus envelope (f 2 - f 1 ) and temporal fine structure at multiple stages of the auditory pathway, from the cochlea to the cortex. The relative contribution of these structures to the scalp-recorded envelope-following response (EFR) remains a matter of debate. Although subcortical sources have been proposed as the main contributors, near-field recordings close to the cochlea contain pre-neural components and have recently been reported in auditory stead

Intrasubject variability in potential early markers of sensorineural hearing damage.

The quest for noninvasive early markers for sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) has yielded diverse measures of interest. However, comprehensi … y, speech-in-noise intelligibility, distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), and auditory evoked potentials; comprising envelope following responses (EFR) and auditory brainstem responses (ABR). Results confirm high reliability in pure-tone audiometry, whereas the matrix sentence-test exhibited a significant learning effect. The reliability of DPOAEs vari …

Global and Parallel Cortical Processing Based on Auditory Gamma Oscillatory Responses in Humans.

Gamma oscillations are physiological phenomena that reflect perception and cognition, and involve parvalbumin-positive γ-aminobutyric acid-ergic interneuron function. The auditory steady-state response (ASSR) is the most robust index for gamma oscillations, and it is impaired in patients with neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and autism. Although ASSR reduction is known to vary in terms of frequency and time, the neural mechanisms are poorly understood. We obtained high-density electrocorticography recordings from a wide area of the cortex in 8 patients with refractory epilepsy.

Physiological Basis of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in a Tympanal Ear.

Acoustic overexposure, such as listening to loud music too often, results in noise-induced hearing loss. The pathologies of this prevalent sensory disorder begin within the ear at synapses of the primary auditory receptors, their postsynaptic partners and their supporting cells. The extent of noise-induced damage, however, is determined by overstimulation of primary auditory receptors, upstream of where the pathologies manifest. A systematic characterization of the electrophysiological function of the upstream primary auditory receptors is warranted to understand how noise exposure impacts on

Cross-modal reaction of auditory and visual cortices after long-term bilateral hearing deprivation in the rat.

Visual cortex (VC) over-activation analysed by evoked responses has been demonstrated in congenital deafness and after long-term acquired hearing loss in humans. However, permanent hearing deprivation has not yet been explored in animal models. Thus, the present study aimed to examine functional and molecular changes underlying the visual and auditory cross-modal reaction. For such purpose, we analysed cortical visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and the gene expression (RT-qPCR) of a set of markers for neuronal activation (c-Fos) and activity-dependent homeostatic compensation (Arc/Arg3.1). To de…

Multimodality Intraoperative Neuromonitoring in Severe Thoracic Deformity Posterior Vertebral Column Resection Correction.

BACKGROUND: Multimodal intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) has been proposed as an effective way to reduce permanent neurologic injury during spinal deformity surgery. However, few studies have reported evoked potential changes at different surgical stages of thoracic posterior vertebral column resection (PVCR). METHODS: A total of 82 cases with severe thoracic deformity (Yang's A type) treated by PVCR in a single institution between January 2010 and March 2015 were reviewed. Multimodal IONM including somatosensory evoked potential, motor evoked potential, and descending neurogenic evoked p

Visual and auditory steady-state responses in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

We designed a study to investigate the patterns of the steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) and auditory steady-state response (ASSR) in adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) when performing a motor response inhibition task. Thirty 12- to 18-year-old adolescents with ADHD and 30 healthy control adolescents underwent an electroencephalogram (EEG) examination during steady-state stimuli when performing a stop-signal task. Then, we calculated the amplitude and phase of the steady-state responses in both visual and auditory modalities. Results showed that adolesc

Rescue of peripheral vestibular function in Usher syndrome mice using a splice-switching antisense oligonucleotide.

Usher syndrome type 1C (USH1C/harmonin) is associated with profound retinal, auditory and vestibular dysfunction. We have previously reported on an antisense oligonucleotide (ASO-29) that dramatically improves auditory function and balance behavior in mice homozygous for the harmonin mutation Ush1c c.216G > A following a single systemic administration. The findings were suggestive of improved vestibular function; however, no direct vestibular assessment was made. Here, we measured vestibular sensory evoked potentials (VsEPs) to directly assess vestibular function in Usher mice. We report that …

Auditory-steady-state response reliability in the audiological diagnosis after neonatal hearing screening.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Conventional audiometry is the gold standard for quantifying and describing hearing loss. Alternative methods become necessary to assess subjects who are too young to respond reliably. Auditory evoked potentials constitute the most widely used method for determining hearing thresholds objectively; however, this stimulus is not frequency specific. The advent of the auditory steady-state response (ASSR) leads to more specific threshold determination. The current study describes and compares ASSR, auditory brainstem response (ABR) and conventional behavioural tone aud…

Motor and parietal cortex stimulation for phantom limb pain and sensations.

Limb amputation may lead to chronic painful sensations referred to the absent limb, ie phantom limb pain (PLP), which is likely subtended by maladaptive plasticity. The present study investigated whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a noninvasive technique of brain stimulation that can modulate neuroplasticity, can reduce PLP. In 2 double-blind, sham-controlled experiments in subjects with unilateral lower or upper limb amputation, we measured the effects of a single session of tDCS (2 mA, 15 min) of the primary motor cortex (M1) and of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) on

HRV and EEG based indicators of stress in children with Asperger syndrome in audio-visual stimulus test.

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a neurobiological condition which is characterized by poor skills in social communication, and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. We studied whether stress-related indices of heart rate variability (HRV) and electroencephalography (EEG) are different in children with AS than normal controls. We analyzed retrospectively the data of the test where audiovisual stimuli were used. We hypothesized that this test is a stressful situation for individuals with AS and they would have a greater reaction than control subjects. EEG and one-channel electr

Neurophysiological evidence of methylmercury neurotoxicity.

BACKGROUND: A variety of neurophysiological measures are useful in hospital settings for diagnostic and other clinical purposes. Previously, abnormal changes in various sensory evoked potentials (EPs), and heart rate variability (HRV) were observed in patients with acquired and fetal Minamata disease (MD; methylmercury poisoning). In recent years, some of these methods have been used for the risk assessment of low-level methylmercury exposure in asymptomatic children. The objectives of this article were to present an overview of neurophysiological findings involved in methylmercury neurotoxici…

Estimation of nonstationary EEG with Kalman smoother approach: an application to event-related synchronization (ERS).

An adaptive spectrum estimation method for nonstationary electroencephalogram by means of time-varying autoregressive moving average modeling is presented. The time-varying parameter estimation problem is solved by Kalman filtering along with a fixed-interval smoothing procedure. Kalman filter is an optimal filter in the mean square sense and it is a generalization of other adaptive filters such as recursive least squares or least mean square. Furthermore, by using the smoother the unavoidable tracking lag of adaptive filters can be avoided. Due to the properties of Kalman filter and benefits

The somato-sensory evoked potential (SSEPs) as well as brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) did not elicit a cortical response in studied patients with UTF. This spinal reflex is probably integrated in the L5 and S1 segments of the spinal cord. Abnormal movements are common in BD, being present in more than 40% of individuals. UTF …

The neural correlates of conscious vision.

Conflicting accounts of the neurobiology of consciousness have emerged from previous imaging studies. Some studies suggest that visual consciousness relates to a distributed network of frontal and partietal regions while others point to localized activity within individual visual areas. While the two positions seem mutually exclusive, timing issues may help reconcile the two. Networks that appear unified in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies may reflect processes that are widely distributed in time. To help resolve this issue, we have investigated timing across a network corr

Functional activity within brain tumors: a magnetic source imaging study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether low-grade gliomas contain functional cortical activity more often than high-grade gliomas within radiologically defined abnormal tissue. METHODS: Patients with intra-axial cerebral lesions located in the vicinity of eloquent brain cortex preoperatively underwent magnetic source imaging. A dual 37-channel biomagnetometer was used to perform the imaging. Evoked magnetic fields were analyzed using the single-equivalent dipole representation to ascertain the neuronal source. Stimuli included painless tactile somatosensory stimulation of fingers, toes, and lips and
