[Injuries of ligaments and tendons of foot and ankle : What every radiologist should know].

Injuries of the ligaments and tendons of the ankle and foot are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries. A correct and precise description of the pathology and possible accompanying injuries is essential for treatment planning by trauma and orthopedic surgeons. While X‑ray is used to exclude fractures, ultrasound is a very useful tool to assess the ligaments and tendons. For the radiologist, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is invaluable regarding the correct assessment of (partial) ruptures, as well as for evaluating accompanying injuries. The aim of the present overview is to provide …

Involvement of the renin-angiotensin system in the progression of severe hand-foot-and-mouth disease.

BACKGROUND: Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is generally considered as a mild exanthematous disease to infants and young children worldwide. HFMD cases are usually mild and self-limiting but for few cases leads to complicated severe clinical outcomes, and even death. Previous studies have indicated that serum Ang II levels in patients with H7N9 infection were related to the severity of infection. However, the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of severe HFMD remain unclear. This study was undertaken to clarify the role of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in the progression of severe H…

Recent development of enterovirus A vaccine candidates for the prevention of hand, foot, and mouth disease.

INTRODUCTION: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a childhood illness commonly caused by enterovirus A. Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) and coxsackievirus A16 (CV-A16) are the most commonly identified viruses associated with HFMD. Recently, outbreaks caused by different enterovirus A including CV-A6 and CV-A10 are increasing. Being available now to protect against EV-A71 infection, inactivated EV-A71 vaccines cannot prevent coxsackievirus infections, thus limiting their general application in controlling HFMD. Multivalent HFMD vaccines are suggested to have broad cross-neutralizing responses agai…

Atypical hand, foot, and mouth disease caused by Coxsackievirus A6 in Argentina in 2015.

We present two groups of cases of atypical hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) caused by Coxsackievirus A6 (CV-A6) detected in Argentina in 2015. The first group involved 14 patients from Chubut province and the second group affected 12 patients from San Luis province. Molecular analysis of the complete VP1 protein gene revealed the circulation of E2 sublineage, the most predominant worldwide. To our knowledge, this is the first report of CV-A6 infections associated with atypical HFMD in Argentina and South America.

New Fixation Methods for the Treatment of the Diabetic Foot: Beaming, External Fixation, and Beyond.

Surgical correction of complex foot and ankle deformities secondary to Charcot neuroarthropathy remains a significant surgical challenge. New technological advancements in hardware have allowed for the use of augmented fixation techniques in midfoot deformity correction, including the use of indication-specific locking plates and beaming techniques that offer enhanced stability. Severe hindfoot deformity management can employ the use of internal fixation, including intramedullary hindfoot nails and circular external fixation frames for limb salvage.

Case Study: Rare Case of Mantle Cell Lymphoma With Extranodal Involvement in the Foot.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that commonly affects extranodal sites. The most commonly affected sites are the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract, Waldeyer's ring, lung, and pleura. We report the case of an 80-year-old diabetic male, in MCL remission, who presented with a small dome-shaped nodule on his calf and an ipsilateral second digit non-healing ulceration after a traumatic fall. Despite surgical and conservative treatment, the wound worsened, resulting in histopathologic examination, which confirmed the presence of lymphocytes, indicating MCL relapse

Micronutrients and Natural Compounds Status and Their Effects on Wound Healing in the Diabetic Foot Ulcer.

The diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is an invariably common complication of diabetes mellitus, it is also a significant cause of amputation as well as extended hospitalization. As most patients with DFU suffer from malnutrition, which has been related to improper metabolic micronutrients status, alterations can affect impaired wound healing process. Micronutrients and herbal remedies applications present a wide range of health advantages to patients with DFU. The purpose of this review is to provide current evidence on the potential effect of dietary supplementations such as vitamins A, C, D, E, mag…

Venous Thromboembolic Prophylaxis in Foot and Ankle Surgery: A Review of Current Literature and Practice.

UNLABELLED: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a well-known and feared complication following foot and ankle surgery, as it is a source of morbidity and mortality in the perioperative phase. The most recent CHEST guidelines recommended against the use of chemoprophylaxis and the majority of the literature has found a low incidence of VTE following foot and ankle surgery. Some authors prefer screening patients for risk factors and recommend the use of chemoprophylaxis on a case-by-case basis. Interestingly, studies that found high incidence of VTE were unable to determine a statistically significa…

A pictorial review of reconstructive foot and ankle surgery: evaluation and intervention of the flatfoot deformity.

This pictorial review focuses on basic procedures performed within the field of podiatric surgery, specifically for elective reconstruction of the midfoot and rearfoot with focus on the flatfoot deformity. Our goal is to demonstrate objective radiographic parameters that surgeons utilize to initially define the deformity, lead to procedure selection, and judge post-operative outcomes. We hope that radiologists will employ this information to improve their assessment of post-operative radiographs following reconstructive foot surgeries. First, relevant radiographic measurements are defined and …

A missense mutation of HOXA13 underlies hand-foot-genital syndrome in a Chinese family.

Hand-foot-genital syndrome (HFGS) is a rare autosomal dominant inherited syndrome characterized by limb malformations and urogenital defects. HFGS is caused by mutations in the HOXA13 gene. The aim of this study was to identify causative mutations in individuals and to explore the molecular pathogenesis in a Chinese family with HFGS. We performed Sanger sequencing and identified a recurrent missense mutation in the homeodomain (c.1123G>T, p.V375F) of HOXA13, molecular modelling predicted the mutation would affect DNA binding, and a luciferase reporter assay indicated that it impaired the abili…

Prevalence and orthopedic management of foot and ankle deformities in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

INTRODUCTION: Foot deformities are frequent complications in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) patients, often requiring orthopedic surgery. However, there are no prospective, randomized studies on surgical management, and there is variation in the approaches among centers both within and between countries. METHODS: In this study we assessed the frequency of foot deformities and surgery among patients recruited into the Inherited Neuropathies Consortium (INC). We also designed a survey addressed to orthopedic surgeons at INC centers to determine whether surgical approaches to orthopedic compl…
