Predictors of surgical management and its impact on outcomes for combined C1-C2 fractures: National registry study.

INTRODUCTION: Combined C1-C2 fractures are common upper cervical injuries with high morbidity and mortality. Controversy exists regarding which patients benefit from surgery because this is an understudied population with only class III evidence available. We examined surgical intervention and its impact on outcomes in patients with C1-C2 fractures. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study of the National Trauma Data Bank included patients admitted between 1/2017 and 1/2023 for combined C1-C2 fractures (ICD-10 diagnosis codes S12.0 and S12.1). Exclusions were admission to a level III-V or non

Atomistic treatment of periodic gold nanowire array nanofasteners under shear loading.

Comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to unravel the mechanics and mechanisms associated with the strength and fracture behavior of a highly ordered gold nanowire (Au-NW) array of a pair of nanofasteners (nanoconnectors) under externally applied shear strain. Large-scale atomic/molecular massively parallel simulator (LAMMPS and embedded atom method were adopted to model the atomic interactions of a number of neighboring nanofasteners. This was affected via the use of a periodic simulation box around a pair of highly ordered nanotube arrays to minimize the cost of the compu

Accessory articulation of cervical vertebral transverse process: a rare case.

There are several anatomical variants of the cervical vertebrae described in literature ranging from benign findings to those with varying clinical implications, including association with congenital diseases. We describe a case of an extremely rare anatomical variant of the cervical spine consisting of an accessory articulation of the cervical vertebrae C4 and C5 right transverse processes. The case is of a 35-year-old female who presented to primary care with 6-week history of intermittent, dull neck pain. An X-ray of the cervical spine was obtained which did not demonstrate radiological evi

[An original protocol for conservative treatment of fractures of the femoral diaphysis in children].

Diaphyseal femoral fractures at children is very common, especially during the children play, traffic accidents and others. In spite on the dramatic clinical status (severe pain, deformity, pathological motions, and loss of stability) and great dislocation, conservative treatment almost always have good clinical result. Basis of this treatment is 3 week of indirect traction and after 6 weeks of plaster cast immobilization with permanent clinical and radiological evaluations. Operative treatment is reserved for cases of unsuccessfull conservative treatment and its complications. Resistutio ad i

Proximal-row carpectomy for diseases of the proximal row.

Twelve patients were studied following proximal-row carpectomy. Four had a follow-up of twenty years or more. The lesions for which the operation was done included Kienböck's disease, perilunar dislocations, and fractures of the carpal scaphoid. The major complaint of pain was relieved following surgery, and a functional range of motion was obtained. Mild degenerative arthritis of the wrist was not a contraindication and progressive degenerative arthritis of the radial capitate articulation did not occur. The operation did not result in weakness and all of the patients resumed their preoperati

Proximal femoral replacement in contemporary revision total hip arthroplasty for severe femoral bone loss: a review of outcomes.

AIMS: Loss or absence of proximal femoral bone in revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains a significant challenge. While the main indication for the use of proximal femoral replacements (PFRs) is in the treatment of malignant disease, they have a valuable role in revision THA for loosening, fracture and infection in patients with bone loss. Our aim was to determine the clinical outcomes, implant survivorship, and complications of PFRs used in revision THA for indications other than malignancy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of 44 patients who underwent revision THA using a
