The role of inferior parietal and inferior frontal cortex in working memory.

Verbal working memory involves two major components: a phonological store that holds auditory-verbal information very briefly and an articulatory rehearsal process that allows that information to be refreshed and thus held longer in short-term memory (A. Baddeley, 1996, 2000; A. Baddeley & G. Hitch, 1974). In the current study, the authors tested two groups of patients who were chosen on the basis of their relatively focal lesions in the inferior parietal (IP) cortex or inferior frontal (IF) cortex. Patients were tested on a series of tasks that have been previously shown to tap phonological s

Neuro-functional differences associated with arithmetic processing in Turner syndrome.

Turner syndrome (TS) is a neurogenetic disorder characterized by the absence of one X chromosome in a phenotypic female. Individuals with TS are at risk for impairments in mathematics. We investigated the neural mechanisms underlying arithmetic processing in TS. Fifteen subjects with TS and 15 age-matched typically developing controls were scanned using functional MRI while they performed easy (two-operand) and difficult (three-operand) versions of an arithmetic processing task. Both groups activated fronto-parietal regions involved in arithmetic processing during the math tasks. Compared with

Neuropsychological outcome of subjects participating in the PKU adult collaborative study: a preliminary review.

Adult subjects with classical phenylketonuria (PKU) who were diagnosed and treated neonatally participated in this long-term follow-up study. Twenty-four subjects received neuropsychological (NP) assessment and a subset received magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to identify: (1) pattern of cognitive dysfunction; (2) effect of high blood phenylalanine (Phe) level at time of cognitive testing; and (3) treatment variables that may be associated with cognitive difficulties in adulthood. All subjects had average IQ except one subject in the borderline range.

Selective attention to spatial frequency: an ERP and source localization analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Physiological correlates of visual selective attention have been observed by recording ERPs to attended versus ignored target stimuli. Over many such studies, spatial attention has been observed to modulate early sensory components beginning 70 ms after stimulus onset, while effects of selection based on other stimulus features such as color and spatial frequency occur at longer latencies. Together, these findings argue for a primacy of location in early attentional selection. However, there have been some reports suggesting attention effects on short latency sensory-evoked potenti

Thallium-201 accumulation in a patient with brain abscess.

A 57-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of high fever and generalized tonic seizure. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) delineated multiple abnormal intensity areas. Thallium-201 (201Tl) scintigraphy revealed abnormal uptake in the brain. The imaging findings did not allow definitive exclusion of brain tumor, even though brain abscess was the more strongly suspected diagnosis. As the patient improved, the multiple abnormal intensity areas in the brain on MRI and the abnormal areas of accumulation on 201Tl scintigraphy were reduced, and eventually completely disappeared. A fi

Stage of specification of the spinal cord and tectal projections from cortical grafts.

In order to determine the embryonic age at which the hodological phenotype developed by neocortical cells is specified, we have examined the spinal or tectal projections developed by embryonic (E) grafts of presumptive frontal or occipital neocortex placed into the frontal or occipital neocortex of newborn host rats. Grafts of E13, E14 and E16 cells of the frontal cortex transplanted into the occipital cortex of newborns are capable of developing and maintaining in adulthood a spinal cord axon. Grafts of E12 cells do not project to the spinal cord but send fibres to the superficial layers of t

Delayed onset of late movement-related cortical potentials and abnormal response to lorazepam in catatonia.

Catatonia is a psychomotor syndrome with an inability to execute and terminate movements completely, leading consecutively to akinesia and posturing, which both respond almost immediately to benzodiazepines, i.e. gaba-potentiators like lorazepam. However, pathophysiological mechanisms of cortical motor and gaba-ergic dysfunction remain unclear. We therefore investigated movement-related cortical potentials (MRPs) and movement kinematics during a motor task before and after lorazepam. Ten akinetic catatonic patients were compared with 10 psychiatric (similar age, sex, medication, and underlying

Frontotemporal dementia: An attempt at clinical characteristics.

The CNS is the second most commonly affected organ in patients with AIDS. Many opportunistic infections may involve the brain, but the four most frequent conditions are toxoplasmosis, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), cryptococcosis and cytomegalovirus infection. Although the incidence of these infections among patients with AIDS has decreased in the past years as a consequence of the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), they remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality in this patient group. This article summarises the clinical manifestations, diagn

Life-span dendritic and spine changes in areas 10 and 18 of human cortex: a quantitative Golgi study.

Dendritic neuropil is a sensitive indicator of the aging process and may exhibit regional cortical variations. The present study examined regional differences and age-related changes in the basilar dendrites/spines of supragranular pyramidal cells in human prefrontal (area 10) and secondary occipital (area 18) cortices. Tissue was obtained from the left hemisphere of 26 neurologically normal individuals ranging in age from 14 to 106 years (M(age) = 57 +/- 22 years; 13 males, 13 females). In tissue prepared by a modified rapid Golgi technique, ten neurons were sampled from each cortical region

Motor neurone disease-inclusion dementia.

We describe nine patients, five women and four men (age at death 58-83 years), who developed isolated progressive frontotemporal dementia over 4 to 12 years. These cases represent nine of the 385 (2.3%) cases from a series of autopsy cases of dementia in a large teaching hospital. One had a mother with a history of frontotemporal dementia and marked frontal lobe atrophy. Another had multiple affected family members with frontotemporal dementia, motor neurone disease or both. None of the nine had clinical evidence of either an upper or lower motor neurone disorder. In each case neuropathologica…

Evaluation of age-related changes in serotonin 5-HT2 and dopamine D2 receptor availability in healthy human subjects.

We assessed the relation between serotonin 5-HT2 receptor availability and aging and compared it with that for dopamine D2 receptors on 19 healthy male volunteers (age range, 21-49 years) using positron emission tomography (PET) and F-18 N-methylspiperone (NMS). 5-HT2 Receptor availability was obtained using the ratio of the distribution volume in the region of interest to that in the cerebellum (Bmax'/Kd' + 1). 5-HT2 Receptor measures were obtained in frontal and occipital cortices. D2 receptor availability in striatum was measured using the "ratio index". 5-HT2 Receptor availability decrease

A study on peritumoural brain oedema around meningiomas by CT and MRI scanning.

There is a great variability in the amount of peritumoural brain oedema accompanying meningiomas. In a previous study it was found that the degree of brain oedema in the white matter around meningiomas correlated with disruption of the layers (especially the cerebral cortex), which separate the tumour from the white matter, as well as with the size and histological subtype of the tumour. In the present study comprising 9 meningiomas, the volume of oedema was calculated by integration of the cross-sectional oedematous areas on serial MRI slices. The volume of oedema was zero in 3 cases and rang

Frontal Variant Alzheimer's Disease or Primary Psychiatric Disorder? A Case Report.

Background and Clinical Significance: In our case study, the patient experienced approximately a year-long delay in her diagnosis, where her initial diagnosis was mistakenly a primary psychiatric disorder, resulting in undue stress on her family. The aim of this case study is to raise awareness of frontal variant Alzheimer's dementia (fvAD) and to increase knowledge amongst clinicians about this disorder, its management and the need for long-term follow up in specialized clinics. Case Presentation: In January 2023, a 56-year-old woman first presented with a 4-month history of worsening cogniti
