Distinct neural correlates of social and object reward seeking motivation.

The "Choose-a-Movie-CAM" is an established task to quantify the motivation for seeking social rewards. It allows participants to directly assess both the stimulus value and the effort required to obtain it. In the present study, we aimed to identify the neural mechanisms of such cost-benefit decision-making. To this end, functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging data were collected from 24 typical adults while they completed the CAM task. We partly replicated the results from our previous behavioural studies showing that typical adults prefer social over object stimuli and low effort over higher e

Duration of illness and cortical thickness in trichotillomania: Preliminary evidence for illness change over time.

Trichotillomania is a psychiatric condition characterized by repetitive pulling out of one's hair, leading to marked functional impairment. The aim of this study was to examine the association between duration of trichotillomania (defined as time between initial age of onset and current age) and structural brain abnormalities by pooling all available global data. Authors of published neuroimaging studies of trichotillomania were contacted and invited to contribute de-identified MRI scans for a pooled analysis. Freesurfer pipelines were used to examine whether cortical thickness and sub-cortica

Euthymic bipolar disorder patients and EEG microstates: a neural signature of their abnormal self experience?

BACKGROUND: A growing number of neuroimaging studies have revealed spatial abnormalities of resting-state functional brain network activity in bipolar disorder (BD). Conversely, abnormalities of resting state temporal dynamics have been scarcely investigated so far. The aim of this study was to characterize the EEG microstates activity in BD patients with a history of manic predominant polarity. Patients were euthymic and pharmacologically stabilized. METHODS: Nineteen BD patients (mean age 34.4 ± 11.0, 7 female) and 19 healthy controls (HC; mean age 38.2 ± 9.9, 7 female) were recruited. The

Detecting acute pain signals from human EEG.

BACKGROUND: Advances in human neuroimaging has enabled us to study functional connections among various brain regions in pain states. Despite a wealth of studies at high anatomic resolution, the exact neural signals for the timing of pain remain little known. Identifying the onset of pain signals from distributed cortical circuits may reveal the temporal dynamics of pain responses and subsequently provide important feedback for closed-loop neuromodulation for pain. NEW METHOD: Here we developed an unsupervised learning method for sequential detection of acute pain signals based on multichanne

Epilepsy-Related Outcomes in Children With Neonatal Cerebellar Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Acute brain injury is a frequent perinatal neurologic complication that can involve the cerebellum. Although short-term outcomes of infants with neonatal cerebellar injury are well described, neurologic sequelae in older children are underreported. Here, we describe epilepsy-related outcomes in young children who suffered from neonatal cerebellar injuries. METHODS: In-house automated software identified patients with neonatal brain injuries who were evaluated at our institution both as neonates (≤28 days) and as children (≥1 year). Neonatal hospital course, neuroimaging, and outcom

ACR Appropriateness Criteria® Dementia.

Degenerative disease of the central nervous system is a growing public health concern. The primary role of neuroimaging in the workup of patients with probable or possible Alzheimer disease has typically been to exclude other significant intracranial abnormalities. In general, the imaging findings in structural studies, such as MRI, are nonspecific and have limited potential in differentiating different types of dementia. Advanced imaging methods are not routinely used in community or general practices for the diagnosis or differentiation of forms of dementia. Nonetheless, in patients who have

Does writing handedness affect neural representation of symbolic number? An fMRI adaptation study.

A key question in the field of numerical cognition is how the human brain represents numerical symbols (e.g., Arabic digits). A large body of research has implicated left parietal regions in symbolic number processing. One possible explanation for this lateralization of neural activity is the handedness of participants. Specifically, participants in neuroimaging research are almost exclusively right-handed. The current study sought to probe whether number representation in the brain is associated with hand preference for handwriting. To address this question, we used functional Magnetic Resona

The core episodic simulation network dissociates as a function of subjective experience and objective content.

Episodic simulation - the mental construction of a possible future event - has been consistently associated with enhanced activity in a set of neural regions referred to as the core network. In the current functional neuroimaging study, we assessed whether members of the core network are differentially associated with the subjective experience of future events (i.e., vividness) versus the objective content comprising those events (i.e., the amount of episodic details). During scanning, participants imagined future events in response to object cues. On each trial, participants rated the subject…

Altered Spontaneous Brain Activity in Patients with Classical Trigeminal Neuralgia Using Regional Homogeneity: A Resting-State Functional MRI Study.

OBJECTIVE: Neuroimaging studies have shown that patients with pain-related conditions have altered neuronal activity and structural functions. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether patients with classical trigeminal neuralgia (CTN) exhibit changes in corresponding neuronal activity via analysis of neuronal activity regional homogeneity (ReHo). METHODS: A total of 28 patients presenting with sore eyes (12 men and 16 women) were matched with 28 healthy controls (12 men and 16 women). All participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This ReHo method was use

Evidence of reward system dysfunction in youth at clinical high-risk for psychosis from two event-related fMRI paradigms.

Abnormal reward processing is thought to play an important role in the development of psychosis, but relatively few studies have examined reward prediction errors, reinforcement learning (RL), and the reward circuitry that subserves these interconnected processes among individuals at clinical high-risk (CHR) for the disorder. Here, we present behavioral and functional neuroimaging results of two experimental tasks designed to measure overlapping aspects of reward processing among individuals at CHR (n = 22) and healthy controls (n = 19). We found no group differences in response times to posit…

Clinical findings of autosomal-dominant striatal degeneration and PDE8B mutation screening in parkinsonism and related disorders.

BACKGROUND: Autosomal-dominant striatal degeneration (ADSD) is a rare neurodegenerative movement disorder caused by mutations in the Phosphodiesterase 8B (PDE8B) gene. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the clinical and imaging features of a Chinese ADSD family and determine whether mutations in PDE8B are associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) or Parkinsonism. METHODS: Clinical, imaging and genetic findings in a Chinese ADSD family are reported. Rare, potentially pathogenic variants in PDE8B were searched in whole-exome sequencing datasets from 1714 PD or parkinsonism patients and 1039 controls. RES

Obesity, body weight regulation and the brain: insights from fMRI.

Obesity constitutes a major global health threat. Despite the success of bariatric surgery in delivering sustainable weight loss and improvement in obesity-related morbidity, effective non-surgical treatments are urgently needed, necessitating an increased understanding of body weight regulation. Neuroimaging studies undertaken in people with healthy weight, overweight, obesity and following bariatric surgery have contributed to identifying the neurophysiological changes seen in obesity and help increase our understanding of the mechanisms driving the favourable eating behaviour changes and su

Brain processing of pictures of children in men with pedophilic disorder: A positron emission tomography study.

Although structural and functional neuroimaging techniques have recently been used to investigate the mechanisms of sexual attraction to children, a hallmark of pedophilic disorder, the differences in the processing of child sexual stimuli between men attracted to children and those attracted to adults remain unclear. Here, our purpose was to identify through positron emission tomography the brain responses of 15 male outpatients with pedophilic disorder to validated visual sexual stimuli depicting children (VSSc) and to compare them with 15 male healthy controls matched for sexual orientation…

Neurogenic stress cardiomyopathy: What do we need to know.

The interaction between the heart and brain is complex and integral to the maintenance of normal cardiovascular function. Even in the absence of coronary disease, acute neuronal injury can induce a variety of cardiac changes. Recent neuroimaging data revealed a network including the insular cortex, anterior cingulate gyrus, and amygdala playing a crucial role in the regulation of central autonomic nervous system. Damage in these areas has been associated with arrhythmia, myocardial injury, higher plasma levels of brain natriuretic peptide, catecholamines, and glucose. Some patients after brain

Differentiation of Types of Visual Agnosia Using EEG.

Visual recognition deficits are the hallmark symptom of visual agnosia, a neuropsychological disorder typically associated with damage to the visual system. Most research into visual agnosia focuses on characterizing the deficits through detailed behavioral testing, and structural and functional brain scans are used to determine the spatial extent of any cortical damage. Although the hierarchical nature of the visual system leads to clear predictions about the temporal dynamics of cortical deficits, there has been little research on the use of neuroimaging methods with high temporal resolution

Speech perception in autism spectrum disorder: An activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is often characterized by atypical language profiles and auditory and speech processing. These can contribute to aberrant language and social communication skills in ASD. The study of the neural basis of speech perception in ASD can serve as a potential neurobiological marker of ASD early on, but mixed results across studies renders it difficult to find a reliable neural characterization of speech processing in ASD. To this aim, the present study examined the functional neural basis of speech perception in ASD versus typical development (TD) using an activation l

Deep Learning based Classification of FDG-PET Data for Alzheimers Disease Categories.

Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) measures the decline in the regional cerebral metabolic rate for glucose, offering a reliable metabolic biomarker even on presymptomatic Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. PET scans provide functional information that is unique and unavailable using other types of imaging. However, the computational efficacy of FDG-PET data alone, for the classification of various Alzheimers Diagnostic categories, has not been well studied. This motivates us to correctly discriminate various AD Diagnostic categories using FDG-PET data. Deep learning h

Proposal for a Prospective Registry for Moyamoya Disease in Japan.

The number of clinical research papers published worldwide on moyamoya disease (MMD) has increased recently. However, the majority of the literature comprises retrospective single-center studies collecting data on small numbers of patients. Several multi-center studies are ongoing in Japan; however, the current data are insufficient for comprehensively outlining the various characteristics of MMD. To enhance our knowledge on epidemiologic, vascular, and genetic aspects of MMD, a prospective multicenter registry will be established in Japan that will help to streamline clinical research as well

Neuroanatomic Variations in Graves' Dysthyroid Ophthalmopathy as Studied With MRI.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether patients with Graves' dysthyroid ophthalmopathy (GDO) have changes in brain anatomy that can be assessed by neuroimaging as compared to age-matched controls. METHODS: We examined 10 female, euthyroid patients with GDO and 14 age and gender matched controls using high-resolution structural MRI scanning. An automatic cortical segmentation algorithm was used to estimate the thickness of each subject's gray matter across the brain. The resulting cortical thickness measurements were transferred to a standard reference space via a template-based warping procedure. A sta
