Two-year prevalence rates of mental health and substance use disorder diagnoses among repeat arrestees.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders often rapidly cycle through the justice system with multiple arrests. Therefore, is it imperative to examine the prevalence of mental health and substance use diagnoses among arrestees and repeat arrestees to identify opportunities for intervention. METHODS: We linked police arrest and clinical care data at the individual level to conduct a retrospective cohort study of all individuals arrested in 2016 in Indianapolis, Indiana. We classified arrestees into three levels: 1 arrest, 2 arrests, or 3 or more arres

Predicting Dental Caries Outcomes in Children: A "Risky" Concept.

In recent years, unprecedented gains in the understanding of the biology and mechanisms underlying human health and disease have been made. In the domain of oral health, although much remains to be learned, the complex interactions between different systems in play have begun to unravel: host genome, oral microbiome with its transcriptome, proteome and metabolome, and more distal influences, including relevant behaviors and environmental exposures. A reasonable expectation is that this emerging body of knowledge can help improve the oral health and optimize care for individuals and populations

A framework for integrated environmental health impact assessment of systemic risks.

Traditional methods of risk assessment have provided good service in support of policy, mainly in relation to standard setting and regulation of hazardous chemicals or practices. In recent years, however, it has become apparent that many of the risks facing society are systemic in nature - complex risks, set within wider social, economic and environmental contexts. Reflecting this, policy-making too has become more wide-ranging in scope, more collaborative and more precautionary in approach. In order to inform such policies, more integrated methods of assessment are needed. Based on work under

A Physiolomics Approach to Reveal Systemic Organ Dynamics in a Rodent.

The central nervous system controls the activity states of the peripheral organs in response to various environmental changes. However, the physiological interactions across multiple organs remain largely unknown. Recently, we have developed an electrophysiological recording system that simultaneously captures neuronal population activity patterns in the brain, heartbeat signals, muscle contraction signals, respiratory signals, and vagus nerve action potentials in freely moving rodents. This paper summarizes several recent insights obtained from this recording system, including the observation

Positive fertility outcomes in a female with classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia following bilateral adrenalectomy.

BACKGROUND: Many women suffer from daily distressing symptoms related to lymphedema following breast cancer treatment. Lymphedema, an abnormal accumulation of lymph fluid in the ipsilateral body area or upper limb, remains an ongoing major health problem affecting more than 40% of 3.1 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. Patient-centered care related to lymphedema symptom management is often inadequately addressed in clinical research and practice. mHealth plays a significant role in improving self-care, patient-clinician communication, and access to health information. Determinants of lung cancer screening follow-up care in community care settings: A qualitative multi-case study in the ACCELL trial.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to lung cancer screening (LCS) follow-up is essential to achieve mortality benefits from screening. However, population-based studies demonstrate follow-up is <50% in clinical settings. Determinants (barriers and facilitators) of LCS follow-up in community settings are under-studied. RESEARCH QUESTION: What are determinants of LCS follow-up in community settings? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This qualitative multi-case study informed a pre-post intervention trial, testing pragmatic interventions to address LCS follow-up in community settings. We conducted rapid ethnographi

Emerging and Novel Ovine Viruses: Molecular Diagnostics, Genomic and Metagenomic Surveillance, and One Health Perspectives.

Emerging and novel ovine viruses pose increasing threats to animal health, livestock productivity, trade, food security, and public health preparedness. Their emergence is driven by complex interactions among animal movement, mixed-species production systems, wildlife-livestock interfaces, arthropod vectors, environmental changes, and viral evolution. This review critically compares current strategies for identifying major, emerging, re-emerging, zoonotic, and newly recognized ovine viruses, with emphasis on their analytical sensitivity, turnaround time, throughput, operational cost, accessibi

Dataset of anonymized clinical events and notes from obstetric electronic health records for NLP.

Interoperability remains a global challenge in healthcare systems. Addressing the need for standardized health data to ensure compatibility would enable large-scale clinical data analysis and systematic studies across heterogeneous databases, generating statistical information to support the analysis of health conditions. Healthcare data documented in Spanish face a critical limitation: the limited availability of standardized, representative, and publicly accessible real-world clinical datasets to support the development and evaluation of data-driven approaches, including Natural Language Pro

Trust in federal statistical agencies and vaccine uptake among U.S. adults.

BACKGROUND: In the United States (US), COVID-19 vaccination saved 3.2 million lives from 2020 to 2023, yet vaccine uptake remains a public health challenge. Seasonal influenza vaccination also remains an important public health priority because influenza contributes substantially to preventable morbidity and mortality each year. Examining the administration of COVID-19 and influenza vaccines provides an opportunity to understand the factors influencing vaccine uptake. METHODS: Repeated cross-sectional data were obtained from the Household Pulse Survey. COVID-19 and influenza vaccine uptake we

Regional Differences in Cancer Research Trends in East and Southeast Asia Based on Analyses of the PubMed Registry.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer represents a major and growing public health burden across Asia, yet cancer research capacity, priorities, and methodologies vary substantially between East Asia (EA) and Southeast Asia (SEA). How scientific activity has evolved across these regions over time remains incompletely characterized. METHODS: We conducted a large-scale bibliometric and text-mining analysis of PubMed-indexed cancer-related publications from 2000 to 2025, covering 18 countries and territories in EA and SEA. Publication metadata, Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), author affiliations, and country infor

AI as a Therapist, Companion, and Romantic Partner: Emerging Roles, Benefits, and Risks for Mental Health in Participatory Medicine.

The line between tool and companion was once obvious, but conversational AI is blurring it in ways few researchers anticipated. Large language model chatbots and purpose-built AI companion agents are now used by millions of people every day. They are not being used to simply retrieve information but, instead, to offer emotional support, help process personal distress, and sustain what many describe as genuine relationships. Research puts the scale of this shift in sharp relief as nearly half (48.7%) of individuals with self-reported mental health concerns report having used a large language mo

Neurosurgical admission and management of traumatic brain injury: a comparative study across high and lower-middle-income country settings.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) represents a major global health burden, with the highest incidence occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). While outcomes of severe TBI are well described, less is known about how health-system structure influences neurosurgical admission patterns and management across income settings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed an observational cohort study comparing neurosurgical admissions and management of TBI over 1 year at a high-income country (HIC) tertiary neurosurgery centre (Institute of Neurological Sciences, Scotland) and a LMIC te

Navigating the Generosity of Medicines (Gen-MED): characterizing the complex relationships of medication donations in Japan through stakeholder and social network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anthropogenic and natural hazards increase reliance on donated medicines. However, inappropriate donations (e.g., expired, unlabeled, or poorly matched to local needs) remain common and create negative impacts on disaster-affected communities. In Japan, the coordination mechanisms and roles among stakeholders remain insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to identify and characterize stakeholders involved in the donated medicine cycle in Japan and to examine their relationships. In addition, this study also obtained stakeholder opinions on our proposed collaborative initiati

Prioritizing the location of vaccination centres during the COVID-19 pandemic by bike in the Netherlands.

Once a vaccine against COVID-19 had been developed, distribution strategies were needed to vaccinate large numbers of the population as efficiently as possible. In this study we explored the geographical accessibility of vaccination centres and examined their optimal location. To achieve this, we used open-source data. For the analysis we assessed the centre-to-population ratio served to assess inequalities and examined the optimal number and location of centres needed to serve 50%, 70% and 85% of the population, while ensuring physical accessibility using a common mode of transportation, the

Development of a pandemic-related core set of quality indicators for quality and patient safety in University Hospitals in Germany.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic entailed a global health crisis, significantly affecting medical service delivery in Germany as well as elsewhere. While intensive care capacities were overloaded by COVID cases, not only elective cases but also non-COVID cases requiring urgent treatment unexpectedly decreased, potentially leading to a deterioration in health outcomes. However, these developments were only uncovered retrospectively. Especially university hospitals, which were meant to take on a central coordinating role, did not have detailed information on expected healthcare utilization, ava

Gendered interpretations of the causes of breast cancer: a structured review of migrant studies.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in women worldwide. Despite it having an etiology that has fixed, genetic as well as modifiable, environmental risk factors, the narrative around breast cancer prevention emphasizes gendered interpretations of the etiology, such as "reproductive factors cause breast cancer" and women should change their behaviors to reduce their risk. Since migrant studies can distinguish environmental from genetic risk factors, we conducted a structured review of migrant studies and assessed prominent cancer website resources to determine evidence of gend
