Thioredoxin-related protein of 14 kDa, TRP14, has previously been identified only in humans. Here we report the identification and expression of an amphioxus TRP14 gene, named AmphiTRP14, the first such data in a non-mammalian organism. AmphiTRP14 consists of a 372-bp open reading frame coding for a 123-amino-acid protein with a calculated molecular weight of 14 kDa. It shares 56% identity with human TRP14 and possesses a highly conserved motif CPDC. Sequence comparison suggests the evolutionary appearance of the four-exon-three-intron organization of TRP14 genes after the split of protostome/

The high degree of similarity at the molecular level, between humans and other species, has provided the rationale for the use of a variety of species as model systems in research, resulting in enormous advances in biological sciences and medicine. In contrast, the individual variability observed among humans, for example, in external physique, organ functionality and others, is accounted for, by only a fraction of 1% of differences at the DNA level. These small differences, which are essential for understanding disease pathogenesis, have posed enormous challenges in medicine, as we try to und

Cat-scratch disease (CSD) was first described by Debré in 1950, yet the causative bacterial agent of CSD remained obscure until 1992, when Bartonella (formerly Rochalimaea) henselae was implicated in CSD by serological and microbiologic studies. Bartonella henselae had initially been linked to bacillary angiomatosis (BA), a vascular proliferative disease most commonly associated with long-standing human immunodeficiency virus infection or other significant immunosuppression. Bartonella henselae has also been associated with bacillary peliosis, relapsing bacteraemia and endocarditis in humans.

Olfactory evoked potentials (OEPs), obtained by electrical stimulation of the olfactory mucosa, were recorded in dogs and humans to develop an objective method for evaluating olfactory functions. In dogs, OEPs were recorded from the olfactory tract and the scalp. The latency of the first negative peak was approximately 40 msec. A response was not obtained after stimulation of the nasal mucosa and disappeared after sectioning of the olfactory nerve. With increasing frequencies of repetitive stimulation, the amplitude was reduced, suggesting that the response was synaptically mediated. These res

Particles with the characteristic shape of enveloped retroviral particles and maximal specific reverse transcriptase (RTase) activity at buoyant density of 1.15-1.17 g/ml have been isolated from human first-trimester chorionic villous tissue. Murine monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to these isolated particles were generated. One IgM mAb (RV3-27) showed granular staining of cytoplasmic structures within syncytiotrophoblast by immunohistochemistry. Immunoelectron microscopic studies have demonstrated focal localisation to small submembranous regions of syncytiotrophoblast, as well as reaction with d

In this study, alcohol-induced histological lesions in a short-term experimental rat model were compared with those characteristic of human alcoholic liver disease. In the rat model used, pretreatment with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) for 6 weeks was employed possibly to sensitize the liver for the effects of alcohol and shorten the time of induction of alcoholic liver disease. After 6 weeks of CCl4 treatment, subsequent maintenance on drinking water containing up to 10 per cent alcohol for 7 weeks potentiated liver fibroplasia as compared with non-alcohol-treated rats. However, steatosis and a

Immunohistochemical localization of S-100b protein and S-100ao protein in human lymphoreticular system was studied by using monospecific antibody directed against either the alpha subunit or beta subunit of S-100 protein. S-100b protein immunoreactivity was detected in Langerhans cells, interdigitating reticulum cells, and histiocytosis X cells, but not in ordinary macrophages and blood monocytes. In contrast, S-100ao protein immunoreactivity was detected in blood monocytes, macrophages of lymph node, alveolar macrophages of lung, and small numbers of Kupffer cells of liver. S-100ao immunoreac

The role of clinical information and chest film for the discrimination between invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) and its differential diagnoses in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection was studied. The diagnostic performance of clinical information and chest film alone and in combination was studied for eight internists and eight radiologists with regular exposure to IPA patients. The multicenter case sample consisted of 25 patients with proven IPA and 25 with other pulmonary diseases typical for HIV. The cases were presented on a CD-ROM. Malaria remains a major challenge globally and in Africa, where climate change is likely to increase its prevalence among communities with low adaptive capacity. The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics of malaria dependence on meteorological drivers, and project incidences and spread of this disease in five district municipalities in Limpopo province, South Africa. We used data from weekly epidemiological reports on hospital admissions in the five municipalities to derive associations with corresponding regional temperature, rainfall, and evapotranspiration. The nucleus accumbens (NAc) and the anterior limb of internal capsule (ALIC) are effective targets for treating addiction using deep brain stimulation (DBS). However, there have been no reports on the electrophysiological characteristics of addiction nuclei at the single-cell level in humans. This study aimed to investigate the electrical activity characteristics of neurons in the NAc and ALIC using microelectrode recording (MER) during DBS surgery in patients with addiction, and six patients with addiction were included (five with heroin addiction and one with alcohol addiction). Mass and stiffness affect on the peculiar characteristics of transmission of the middle ear and the distinctive behavior of the cochlear mechanics. Applying the principle of the mass and stiffness, the band-pass characteristic transfer function of the middle ear has been explained. The greatest transfer function of the middle ear, approximately 24-29 dB, is observed at 1-2 kHz in both cat and human species. However, at lower frequencies, the transfer function was disturbed by the stiffness of the middle ear primarily due to middle ear cavity. At higher frequencies, the transfer function was di

Psychosocial factors, including type A personality, anger, hostility, and anxiety, have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. Abnormal sympathetic responses to stress may help explain the link between certain behavior patterns and cardiovascular disease. We tested the hypothesis that in normal humans, type A personality characteristics are associated with exaggerated heart rate, pressor, and sympathetic nerve responses to mental and physical stress. We measured heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (obtained with direct intraneural recording

Studies of auditory function in the human neonate indicate adult-like hearing sensitivity, mature cochlear function and well-developed responses in the auditory pathway. Paradoxically, measurements of middle ear function are characterized by responses that would be interpreted as abnormal in older subjects. Consequently, there is not an accepted clinical test for middle ear disease in the newborn population. Like human neonates, chinchillas have normal hearing sensitivity at birth, but middle ear function tested by multifrequency tympanometry is abnormal compared to the adult. A previous study

We have recently cloned an amino acid transporter from the human placental choriocarcinoma cell line JAR which, when functionally expressed in HeLa cells, induces an amino acid transport activity with characteristics known to be associated with the amino acid transport system B(0) (R. Kekuda, P.D. Prasad, Y.J. Fei, V. Torres-Zamorano, S. Sinha, T.L. Yang-Feng, F.H. Leibach, and V. Ganapathy, J. Biol. Chem. 271, 18657-18661, 1996). The presence of the amino acid transport system B(0) (ATB(0)) has however not been previously described in these cells by functional studies. In the present investig

IntroductionArtificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of technology enabling machines to emulate complex human skills; it can also entail problem-solving using bioinspired methods. It is used for automating systematic literature reviews (SLR), that is, defining a clinical question, locating relevant literature, preliminary screening, study evaluation, data extraction and analysis. Title and abstract screening is one of the most time-consuming and error-prone phases involved in developing a systematic review. While AI promises to expedite this process, adopting it faces challenges due to concern

It is apparent that there are many similarities among the various filariae. Besides a common life cycle, with an arthropod vector and human hosts, there are similarities in the diseases that they produce. This clinical picture takes one of two main courses: (1) characteristic disease produced by the presence of adult nematodes in their target tissue, which distinguishes typical cases for each of the filariae, and (2) the systemic hypersensitivity reactions to the circulating microfilaria, which tend to be similar. The characteristic feature of Wuchereria bancrofti is genital disease with funic

Blastocystis spp. are the most common intestinal protozoan parasites detected in human stool samples. While identified long before today, its pathogenicity remains controversial. It is generally asymptomatic but in symptomatic cases, many gastrointestinal symptoms, especially diarrhea, have been associated with Blastocystis infection. In recent years, the relationship between the symptoms observed in cases and Blastocystis subtypes (ST) has been reported. The aim of this study was to detect Blastocystis in diarrheal cases admitted to the Aydın Adnan Menderes University Faculty of Medicine, Dep

Absence epilepsy is a heritable human neurological disorder characterized by brief nonconvulsive seizures with behavioral arrest, moderate-to-severe loss of consciousness (absence), and distinct spike-wave discharges (SWDs) in the EEG and electrocorticogram (ECoG). Genetic models of this disorder have been created by selectively inbreeding rats for absence seizure-like events with similar electrical and behavioral characteristics. However, these events are also common in outbred laboratory rats, raising concerns about whether SWD/immobility accurately reflects absence epilepsy as opposed to "n
