Predictors of Attitudes toward Aging in Middle-Aged Individuals: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Objective: Attitudes toward aging (ATA) are among the most important determinants of well-being in old age. However, little research has examined factors contributing to their formation in middle-aged individuals. This study aimed to investigate predictors of attitudes toward aging among Iranian middle-aged individuals in 2022. Method : This study recruited 330 people with a mean age of 56.5 ± 5.6 using multistage cluster sampling. Data were collected using a three-part questionnaire, including demographic factors, an attitude toward aging questionnaire (AAQ), and a multidimensional scale of p

Enriched music-supported therapy for individuals with chronic stroke: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Many stroke survivors still present with upper-limb paresis six months post-stroke, impacting their autonomy and quality of life (QoL). We designed an enriched Music-supported Therapy (eMST) program to reduce disability in this population. We evaluated the eMST's effectiveness in improving functional abilities and QoL in chronic stroke individuals compared to the conventional motor program Graded Repetitive Arm Supplementary Program (GRASP). METHODS: We conducted a pragmatic two-arm parallel-group randomized controlled trial with a 3-month follow-up and masked assessment. The eMST

Changes in Challenging Behaviors Accompanying Transition to a New Facility in Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities.

Challenging behavior (CB), the most common example being extreme self-injurious or aggressive/destructive behavior, is often observed as a major behavior issue in individuals with severe intellectual disabilities. This study investigated how CB changed among residents of a facility for people with disabilities before and after it was restructured from a traditional format single room shared by two to three individuals with approximately 20 residents lived together to a format featuring private areas with two rooms per resident and a unitcare system. Twenty-one residents of Care Home A, which w

Alterations in the brain functional network of abstinent male individuals with methamphetamine use disorder.

Methamphetamine is a highly addictive psychostimulant drug that is abused globally and is a serious threat to health worldwide. Unfortunately, the specific mechanism underlying addiction remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the characteristics of functional connectivity in the brain network and the factors influencing methamphetamine use disorder in patients using magnetic resonance imaging. We included 96 abstinent male participants with methamphetamine use disorder and 46 age- and sex-matched healthy controls for magnetic resonance imaging. Compared with healthy controls, p

Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Resting-State Brain Activity in Individuals with Tinnitus.

This study looked at the possible effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals who came to our clinic seeking relief from tinnitus. The performance of the subjects during the COVID-19 pandemic was compared with similar individuals who came to our clinic before the pandemic began. The study involved 50 adults with chronic tinnitus, made up of a study group (24 subjects tested during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020-2021) and a control group before the pandemic began (26 subjects tested from 2013 to 2017). None of the 24 reported having contracted COVID-19. Data collection involved the Tinnitus H

Factors influencing physical activity in individuals with head and neck cancer: a scoping review.

ObjectivesHigher physical activity (PA) levels are associated with better quality of life in people with head and neck cancer (HNC). Despite this positive association, most individuals with these cancer types have a sedentary or low-activity lifestyle. Limited knowledge exists regarding the factors that influence PA in this group. Therefore, we reviewed and mapped the available literature on factors that may influence PA in people with HNC.DesignWe conducted a scoping review based on the framework of Arksey and O'Malley and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

Psychological Impact in Individuals with Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance and Smoldering Multiple Myeloma.

In our study of 246 newly diagnosed individuals with MGUS or SMM (115 MGUS, 131 SMM), we found that 19% reported anxiety, with no significant difference between the MGUS and SMM groups (22% vs. 17%). Those with a history of psychiatric disorders or belonging to certain racial groups were more likely to experience anxiety. Initial coping responses included religious coping, denial, frustration, irritability, and seeking social support. Given anxiety's detrimental effects, our findings emphasize the importance of incorporating psychosocial assessments to optimize care for MGUS and SMM patients.

Simulative investigation of the required level of geometrical individualization of the lumbar spines to predict fractures.

Injury mechanisms of the lumbar spine under dynamic loading are dependent on spine curvature and anatomical variation. Impact simulation with finite element (FE) models can assist the reconstruction and prediction of injuries. The objective of this study was to determine which level of individualization of a baseline FE lumbar spine model is necessary to replicate experimental responses and fracture locations in a dynamic experiment.Experimental X-rays from 26 dynamic drop tower tests were used to create three configurations of a lumbar spine model (T12 to L5): baseline, with aligned vertebrae

Individual differences in color matches and cone spectral sensitivities in 51 young adults.

Forty-six young adult observers with normal color vision (plus five from an earlier study) made a series of color matches using a new LED-based, multi-wavelength visual trichromator. Thirteen LED lights of different wavelengths were combined to produce 11 triplets of lights that observers were asked to match to a white reference light of 7500 K over visual angles of either 2° or 10°. Matches were initially made by asking observers to adjust the intensities of the three lights making up each triplet. As the experiment progressed, a more intuitive matching procedure was developed. By transformin

Assessment and report of individual symptoms in studies of delirium in postoperative populations: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Delirium is most often reported as present or absent. Patients with symptoms falling short of the diagnostic criteria for delirium fall into 'no delirium' or 'control' groups. This binary classification neglects individual symptoms and may be hindering identification of the pathophysiology underlying delirium. This systematic review investigates which individual symptoms of delirium are reported by studies of postoperative delirium in adults. METHODS: Medline, EMBASE and Web of Science databases were searched on 03 June 2021 and 06 April 2023. Two reviewers independently examined

Development of an individualized model for predicting postoperative delirium in elderly patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common complication in older patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) that adversely impacts clinical outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the risk factors for POD and to construct a predictive nomogram. Data for a total of 1481 older patients (training set: n=1109; validation set: n=372) who received liver resection for HCC were retrospectively retrieved from two prospective databases. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration plot, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate the performance. The rate of POD was 13.3% (148/1109)

Clinical and genetic diversity in Iranian individuals with RAPSN-related congenital myasthenic syndrome.

Congenital myasthenic syndromes (CMSs) are genetic disorders affecting motor function with variable symptoms. RAPSN-related CMS, caused by mutations in the RAPSN gene, leads to muscle weakness. Accurate diagnosis is essential for proper management. This study aims to analyze six Iranian families affected by RAPSN-CMS, focusing on clinical manifestations, genetic variants, treatment response, and outcomes. Clinical assessments, genetic analysis, and whole-exome sequencing were performed on the six families to identify RAPSN gene mutations. The study examined symptoms, disease severity, age of o

A Knowledge-based Decision Support System for recommending safe recipes to individuals with dysphagia.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a disorder that can be associated to several pathological conditions, including neuromuscular diseases, with significant impact on quality of life. Dysphagia often leads to malnutrition, as a consequence of the dietary changes made by patients or their caregivers, who may deliberately decide to reduce or avoid specific food consistencies (because they are not perceived as safe), and the lack of knowledge in how to process foods are critics. Such dietary changes often result in unbalanced nutrients intake, which can have significant consequences for frail patients. This
