Women's experience of gestational diabetes and healthcare in southern Sweden - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes is one of the most common pregnancy complications, affecting 14% of all pregnancies globally, and its prevalence is increasing. Gestational diabetes is associated with short and long-term complications for both the mother and their offspring, which are possible to prevent by glycemic control mainly facilitated by healthy lifestyle behaviors. Hence, women diagnosed with gestational diabetes have a significant role in disease management which can be perceived as burdensome. Previous research has well documented the psychological implications of diagnosis in the w

Lived experiences of recovery following musculoskeletal trauma 6 months following injury in the UK: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Traumatic musculoskeletal injuries are common and often life changing. The 6-month period following injury is a critical phase in recovery, during which engagement with rehabilitation professionals can be key to achieving positive outcomes. However, there is limited understanding of which aspects of recovery matter most to patients, how they define a successful recovery and what this looks like when captured during the lived recovery process. The aim of this study was to explore patients' views and perceptions of recovery following musculoskeletal trauma and to understand what cons

Applying self-determination theory towards motivational factors of physical activity in people undergoing haemodialyses: A qualitative interview study.

INTRODUCTION: The level of physical activity of people undergoing haemodialyses is low, so understanding what factors underlie the motivation to be physically active in people undergoing haemodialyses is important. Therefore, this qualitative study aims to explore the different motivation types and corresponding basic psychological needs (BPNs) of people undergoing haemodialyses based on self-determination theory. METHODS: We adopted the objective sampling method to select 19 patients with the end-stage renal disease aged from 28 to 66 years old from a tertiary hospital in Xi'an. They underwe

Identifying longitudinal patterns of HIV treatment (dis)engagement and re-engagement from oral histories of virologically unsuppressed persons in Uganda: A thematic trajectory analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is limited study of persons deemed "harder to reach" by HIV treatment services, including those discontinuing or never initiating antiretroviral therapy (ART). We conducted narrative research in southern Uganda with virologically unsuppressed persons identified through population-based sampling to discern longitudinal patterns in HIV service engagement and identify factors shaping treatment persistence. METHODS: In mid-2022, we sampled adult participants with high-level HIV viremia (≥1000 RNA copies/mL) from the prospective, population-based Rakai Community Cohort Study. Usi

Storm Alex: acute stress responses in the pediatric population.

INTRODUCTION: On 2 October 2020, a violent storm (Alex) reached the French Riviera and caused significant damage in three inhabited valleys in the hinterland of the city of Nice. Entire populations were exposed to prolonged stress (no means of communication, electricity nor water) and were particularly at risk of suffering from psychological consequences. We first hypothesized that a majority of children would experience an acute stress reaction. However, we also hypothesized that their clinical expression would differ depending on their developmental age. Thus, we aimed to evaluate, according

Surgical decision making in premenopausal BRCA carriers considering risk-reducing early salpingectomy or salpingo-oophorectomy: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Acceptance of the role of the fallopian tube in 'ovarian' carcinogenesis and the detrimental sequelae of surgical menopause in premenopausal women following risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) has resulted in risk-reducing early-salpingectomy with delayed oophorectomy (RRESDO) being proposed as an attractive alternative risk-reducing strategy in women who decline/delay oophorectomy. We present the results of a qualitative study evaluating the decision-making process among BRCA carriers considering prophylactic surgeries (RRSO/RRESDO) as part of the multicentre PROTECTOR tria

Understanding health behaviour in pregnancy and infant feeding intentions in low-income women from the UK through qualitative visual methods and application to the COM-B (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behaviour) model.

BACKGROUND: Health behaviours during pregnancy and the early years of life have been proven to affect long term health, resulting in investment in interventions. However, interventions often have low levels of completion and limited effectiveness. Consequently, it is increasingly important for interventions to be based on both behaviour change theories and techniques, and the accounts of pregnant women. This study engaged with pregnant women from deprived communities, to understand their subjective experiences of health in pregnancy. METHODS: The study adopted a women-centred ethos and recrui

The dissonance of "expectation-reality": a narrative study on preoperative identity expectations and postoperative identity reconstruction of patients after metabolic and bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: More than 1 billion people globally live with obesity. Individuals who have undergone metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) face identity reconstruction challenges linked to poor dietary adherence and psychological distress. Few studies analyze the mechanism of dissonance between preoperative identity expectations and postoperative reality, leaving a psychosocial support gap for long-term recovery. OBJECTIVES: To explore the dynamic collision between preoperative identity expectations and postoperative reality and identify key turning points in identity reconstruction among patien

Transforming multimorbidity care: Organizational barriers and provider behaviour in type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals' behaviours are central to effective multimorbidity management yet remain underexplored in behavioural medicine. Co-existing type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) present intertwined behavioural and biomedical challenges; however, the organizational and professional factors that shape integrated care are poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to identify behavioural and organizational determinants of integrated T2D-CVD care and to apply behaviour change theory to provider practice. DESIGN: Sixteen healthcare profes

Emotional distress in the Chinese academic context: an integrative mixed-methods study of gratitude, savoring, and cognitive reappraisal.

INTRODUCTION: Chinese university students face escalating mental health challenges, yet the psychological mechanisms that protect against emotional distress remain inadequately understood. This study investigates whether cognitive reappraisal mediates the relationship between positive psychological resources (gratitude and savoring beliefs) and emotional distress in this population. METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was employed with 497 Chinese university students (49.9% female, mean age 20.3 years) recruited from three large public universities in Eastern China. Creating healthy organizations: an integrated culture of care in high-demand sectors-a qualitative study of private-sector organizations in Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: "High-demand sectors" are characterized by substantial physical, psychological, and emotional demands, alongside persistent recruitment and retention challenges. Despite growing interest in shaping healthy organizations, research has largely focused on workplace- or individual-level determinants. The aim of this study was to deepen the understanding of organizational-level health-promoting factors by exploring experienced managers' perspectives and visions regarding the promotion of a healthy work environment in high-demand sectors. METHODS: Using an exploratory qualitative desi
