The knee joints from males of two strains (CBA/ORT and STR/ORT) were studied histologically. The incidence of degenerative joint disease was very high in the STR/ORT strain. Degeneration of the cartilage invariably occurred first at the interface of the cruciate ligament and articular cartilage of the tibia. Lesions were only seen on the medial tibial and later the medial femoral condyles. Blocks of fibrillated, uncalcified cartilage were gradually lost across the condyle, leaving the tidemark as a secondary articulating surface. Patients with knee and hip joint diseases or fractures in a limb with a distal portion amputated were successfully treated with total joint arthroplasties. Two patients with below-knee amputations recieved total joint replacements. One underwent a total hip arthroplasty and the other had a total knee arthryplasty on the side of the amputation. Physical therapy was modified minimally for the two patients in comparison to other patients with total joint replacements. Prosthetic changes were required in both cases. With new prostheses, both patients were able to return to work.

This paper deals with the uncommon and frequently unrecognized problem of trapped dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal joint. These may be dorsal or volar. Soft tissue forming a noose, or interposed in the joint, is implicated. There is injury to one or more of the following structures: 1) extensor mechanism, 2) collateral ligament, 3) volar plate, 4) flexor tendon sheath, and 5) skin (compound dislocations). Open reduction and appropriate soft tissue repair are mandatory the essential features of diagnosis and management are discussed and four illustrative cases are presented.

Closed reduction of an anterior dislocation of the hip joint in a 15-year-old boy failed because of interposition of capsule, iliopsoas and rectus femoris muscles. The immediate complications were compression of the common femoral artery, tear of the femoral vein, and fat embolism 24 hours after the injury. The sequelae were periarticular ossification and avascular necrosis of the femoral head. The definitive treatment was a Charnley total hip arthroplasty.

This paper discusses 3 recurrent dislocations of the elbow joint. As possible cause for the etiology of the dislocation the author offers the post-traumatic flattening of the semilunar notch of the ulna. In 2 cases, a successful repair using the Kapel procedure was performed.

Forth hips in 35 patients were converted from pseudarthrosis to low friction total hip arthroplasty (LFA). Pain, function and range of motion were improved in most cases. Gait was improved and number of walking aids required were reduced in most cases. Abduction against gravity and straight leg raising were also improved. Limb length was restored in all but 9 cases. To determine the effectiveness of naproxen in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee joint, a double-blind cross-over study against placebo was carried out on 61 patients. Statistically significant positive therapeutic effects were observed, including analgesia, increased mobility, decrease in joint swelling and improvement in activities of daily living. Side effects were infrequent, mild and disappeared rapidly.

The joint toxic action of mixtures of perchloroethylene with benzene or toluene was tested at five dose levels for each of six binary combinations with 20 rats per dose. LD50 data with 95% fiducial limits are reported for each mixture and tests for additive joint toxicity were made. The results indicate that the mixtures of perchloroethylene and benzene gave values for the LD50 which were slightly less than additive while perchloroethylene and toluene mixtures had LD50 values which could not be predicted by an additive model.

In rabbit knees 600 Staphylococcus aureus organisms produced progressive infection in 50 per cent of the knees injected, whereas 5.3 times 10-7 Micrococcus species caused only transient colonization of the joints. Methicillin, cephacetrile, and clindamycin administered before injection of the staphylococci gave protection. Stainless-steel particles in the knee did not increase susceptibility to infection from injected micrococci but did make established micrococcal infections more persistent.
