A number of different viruses can be primary pathogens in the neonatal calf diarrhea complex. By far the most common viruses causing calfhood diarrhea found throughout the world are rotaviruses and coronaviruses. Primary infection of newborn calves with either one of these viruses can cause severe intestinal alterations and diarrhea. Rotaviruses can produce high-morbidity outbreaks of diarrhea in calves under 10 days of age. Morality is variable mainly owing to secondary bacterial infections and electrolyte imbalances. Rotavirus infection of the small intestinal mucosa leads to loss of enteroc

In 1963 the World Health Organization established a system for the collection and dissemination of information on viral infections and by 1976, laboratories in 49 countries were participating in this scheme. The present study is in two parts: part 1 is an analysis of almost 60 000 reports on neurological disease associated with viral and Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections reported during the 10-year period 1967-76. This analysis showed a steady increase in the yearly number of reports of viral neurological diseases, which closely followed the general increase in the overall reporting of virus di

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a major public health challenge, particularly in sub‑Saharan Africa, where mother‑to‑child transmission (MTCT) is a leading cause of chronic infection. Perinatal HBV acquisition carries a high risk of chronic disease, yet prevention efforts are limited by restricted access to HBV DNA testing. Simplified point‑of‑care viral load assays, such as Xpert® HBV Viral Load, may strengthen MTCT prevention in resource‑limited settings.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between June 2024 and May 2025 among pregnant woman attending antena

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis infection is a common neglected tropical disease distributed worldwide, mainly in tropical and subtropical climates. The impact of S. stercoralis infections on human health ranges from mild asymptomatic infections to chronic strongyloidiasis unnoticeable until the host is immunosuppressed. In severe strongyloidiasis, a syndrome of hyperinfection and larval dissemination to various organs can occur with high mortality rates. The diagnosis of strongyloidiasis is challenging because of the absence of a single standard reference test with high sensitivity and

Chagas disease, also known as American Trypanosomiasis, is a parasitic infectious disease that is primarily transmitted by infected kissing bugs belonging to the subfamily Triatominae. Military personnel that conduct deployment operations (field training, patrols, combat, physical training and sustainment) in kissing-bug infested habitats are at risk. Transmission of disease to humans occurs by contact of skin and mucous membranes with infected kissing bug's feces. Additionally, transmission can result from blood transfusion, and ingestion of infected insects. However, the exact route of infec

Zika virus is a Flavivirus in the family Flaviviridae, and transmitted to humans by Aedes species mosquitoes. Zika virus infection is asymptomatic in 80% of cases and has a mild course when symptoms occur. These symptoms include headache, myalgia, mild fever, maculopapular rash and conjunctivitis. Zika virus has been associated with serious neurological complications such as Guillain-Barre syndrome in adults and microcephaly development in neonates. It has recently become a global public health problem as a result of increasing cases. As it is known that the vector of this disease is present i

Hantaviruses which are the members of Bunyaviridae, differ from other members of this family since they are transmitted to humans by rodents. More than 200.000 cases of hantavirus infections are reported annually worldwide. Hantaviruses can lead to two different types of infection in humans, namely, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). HFRS is the most common type of hantavirus infection in Europe and Asia and the most common virus types are Dobrava, Puumala, Hantaan and Seoul. A total of 25 hantavirus suspected cases have been reported from the

AIM: In order to clarify the biological features of the lung fluke, Paragonimus heterotremus, it is necessary to replicate its complete life cycle in the laboratory.
METHODS: Tricula wumingensis infected with the miracidiae of P. heterotremus were regularly dissected after infection for larvae observation. The cercariae of P. heterotremus from positive snails were used for experimental infection of the crab, Samanniathelphusa nanningensis. The crabs were then examined for the metacercariae at regular intervals. The infection of mammals (cats and rats) was performed with the metacercariae obta

BACKGROUND: In the conjugate vaccine era, viruses are the most common cause of meningitis. Here, we evaluated epidemiological trends in laboratory-confirmed viral meningitis across all age-groups over an 11-year period in England.
METHODS: In England, hospital laboratories routinely report laboratory-confirmed infections electronically to the UK Health Security Agency. Records of positive viral detections in cerebrospinal fluid during 2013-2023 were extracted. Incidence rates with confidence intervals were calculated using mid-year resident population estimates.
RESULTS: There were 22,114 la

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic infections such as Q fever, brucellosis and leptospirosis can lead to serious complications but pose diagnostic and management challenges to general practitioners (GPs) as patients often present with non-specific symptoms such as fever.
OBJECTIVE: To develop a tool to assist GPs in the diagnosis and management of common zoonotic infections
DISCUSSION: An algorithm was developed with advice and comments from GPs, laboratory specialists and infectious disease specialists. Emphasis is placed on understanding patient risk factors, such as non-household contact with animals,

Panhypogammaglobulinaemia is a rare complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but its cause and mechanism are unclear. We observed transient panhypogammaglobulinaemia in a patient with neuropsychiatric SLE after treatment with prednisolone and cyclophosphamide. After the patient developed recurrent infections, laboratory findings disclosed panhypogammaglobulinaemia with B-lymphocyte deficiency. The serum immunoglobulin level returned to the normal range after the prednisolone was tapered off. Because lupus patients are susceptible to infections associated with disease exacerbation or

Onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis (LF) are major causes of severe morbidity and considerable socio-economic problems throughout the tropics. Vector control and mass chemotherapy have helped to control these infections in some regions, but the temporary success of such measures argues strongly for the development of vaccines. Success in such a venture will require detailed knowledge of protective immune responses in conjunction with the identification of target antigens. By comparison with other important parasitic infections, such as schistosomiasis and leishmaniasis, work on the develop

Dogs that live in tick-infested areas are at risk for contracting rickettsial infections. Clinical signs associated with ehrlichiosis or Rocky Mountain spotted fever may be dramatic or mild. Clinicians must consider the possibility of rickettsial diseases to request laboratory tests that will permit a proper diagnosis. Specific antimicrobial therapy usually brings about clinical improvement, although some dogs may not be cleared of rickettsial organisms, even with prolonged treatment. A small percentage of dogs die of rickettsial infections, either in the acute stage or owing to chronic bone m

We reviewed emergency admissions for the complaint of musculoskeletal symptoms for 113 children with sickle cell disease. Over a 2-year period, we accumulated a total of 247 admissions to a major children's hospital. Four osteoarticular infections were identified, resulting in an incidence of 1.6% per admission for musculoskeletal complaints. Admission history, physical findings, laboratory values, and radiographic studies were reviewed. We compared findings in the group with the positive diagnosis of osteoarticular infections with those who were thought to have only vaso-occlusive crisis. Alt

Three hundred and fifty-four soft, loose or watery stool specimens from patients with acute diarrhoea were screened for the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts. A modified Ziehl Neelsen with DMSO staining method was used for detecting Cryptosporidium oocysts in the stool samples. The oocysts were identified in 24 (6.8%) of the samples, while 46 samples (13%) showed mixed infections. Children aged between 2 and 10 years were mostly infected by this parasite, while infection was more prevalent in females than in males for all the age groups. These findings suggest that Cryptosporidium is one of

Screening for infection with human immunodeficiency virus should be offered periodically to persons seeking treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, intravenous drug users, homosexual and bisexual men, and other at increased risk of infection. Testing should also be offered to pregnant women (or women contemplating pregnancy) who are at increased risk for HIV infection. Testing should not be performed in the absence of informed consent and adequate pretest and post-test counseling. Clinicians should be careful to use proper tests and qualified laboratories. Seropositive persons require ade

Since 1981 an increasing number of human parvovirus infections have been reported. There is now clear evidence that parvovirus B19 is the causative agent of erythema infectiosum (fifth disease). Further clinical situations associated with this virus include aplastic crisis in patients with hemolytic anemia and acute and persistent arthropathies preferentially occurring in adult women. Transplacental infection during pregnancy may result in hydrops foetalis, intrauterine death and spontaneous abortion. Additional, thus far barely characterized parvoviruses have been isolated from individuals wi
