Dynamics of neutralizing antibodies against enterovirus D68 in adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) causes acute respiratory illnesses and has also implicated in acute flaccid myelitis. Neutralizing antibodies (NtAbs) represent key components of the adaptative immunity. However, the dynamics of EV-D68 NtAbs in adults remain poorly characterized. We evaluated EV-D68 NtAb levels in retail workers in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: NtAbs were measured in paired serum samples (N = 194), from retail workers (≥18 years) enrolled in a prospective SARS-CoV-2 cohort at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Québec-Université Laval, in Quebec City.

Predictors of Medication Cessation After Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Procedures.

PURPOSE: Medication cessation is an important motivator for patients undergoing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) surgery; however, evidence on this topic remains limited. We evaluated rates and probabilities of BPH and overactive bladder (OAB) medication cessation in a statewide cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using Michigan statewide claims data (2017-2022) from the Michigan Value Collaborative, patients who underwent BPH surgery with pre-existing BPH or OAB medications were identified. Procedures were categorized as (1) transurethral surgery, including transurethral resection of the prosta

Neuronal overexpression of Kcnn1 in A53T α-synuclein mice suppresses phospho-serine 129 α-synuclein formation and doubles survival time.

Synucleinopathies, including idiopathic Parkinson's Disease, are driven by misfolding and aggregation of the 140 residue α-synuclein protein that plays a role in presynaptic vesicle regulation. We describe effects of a modifier, neuronal overexpression of the mouse calcium-activated potassium channel subunit Kcnn1, on a mouse model in which transgenic Thy1.2-driven human A53T α-synuclein directs fully penetrant lethal motor disease. Kcnn1 overexpression increased median survival of these mice from 8.5 to 18 mo, associated with an altered presentation from rapidly progressive dystonic-like beha

Temporal and Autoregressive Features for Cattle Behavior Classification Using Low-Power LoRaWAN Accelerometer Data.

Accelerometer sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) are reshaping automated behavior monitoring in precision livestock management, yet their joint deployment on extensive rangelands is constrained by energy and bandwidth budgets. Low-Power Long-Range Wide-Area Network (LoRaWAN) collars address these constraints by compressing the raw tri-axial signal on the device into a single scalar per reporting interval, the Motion Index (MI). This onboard compression preserves enough signal to separate active behaviors but discards the per-axis and frequency content that fine-grained classification typ

Pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical management of type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with anal fistula.

BACKGROUND: The comorbidity of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and anal fistula is a prevalent global clinical challenge. Anal fistula is the second most common anorectal disease, with an incidence 1.81-2.01 times higher in diabetic patients than in the general population. Diabetic patients face elevated risks of postoperative infection, delayed healing, and recurrence, closely linked to poor preoperative glycemic control. Current strategies are mostly extrapolated from general population guidelines, failing to address the unique metabolic, immune, and microcirculatory abnormalities in this gr

Submandibular Gland Resection in East Asian Patients: An Anatomical and Clinical Series of 240 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Submandibular gland (SMG) prominence can disrupt neck contour, particularly in East Asian patients with limited skeletal support and reduced soft-tissue camouflage. Although concerns regarding deep neck hemorrhage with respiratory compromise, nerve injury, sialocele, and dry mouth have limited broader adoption, selective SMG reduction may be incorporated into deep neck contouring in appropriately selected patients. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 240 East Asian patients who underwent deep neck contouring with partial SMG resection from August 2024 to July 2025. Concomitant fa

The development of in-group-favoring math stereotypes among adolescents across gender and race/ethnicity: Teacher influence and motivational consequences.

The developmental processes underlying in-group-favoring math stereotypes (i.e., beliefs that favor one's own gender over another gender in math ability) and their associated motivational benefits in adolescence remain understudied. Guided by developmental intergroup theory and situated expectancy-value theory, the present study examined (a) the reciprocal relations between in-group-favoring math stereotypes and perceived math teacher support; (b) their associations with math motivational outcomes (i.e., math expectancies, math identity, and math grade point average); and (c) gender difference

Impact of nonpharmaceutical interventions on infectious disease patterns in Yunnan Province across the COVID-19 pandemic phases.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic substantially altered global infectious disease patterns. Nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs)—including lockdowns, travel restrictions, and enhanced hygiene—were widely implemented to control SARS-CoV-2 but also influenced the transmission of other infectious diseases. This study assessed the impact of NPIs on 36 notifiable diseases in Yunnan Province, China, across three phases: the prepandemic period (2014–2019), the pandemic phase (2020–2022), and the postpandemic phase (2023), when most NPIs were lifted. METHODS: We analyzed surveillance data from the Y

Blood pressure before high altitude exposure: are all individuals healthy with controlled arterial blood pressure?

BACKGROUND: The increasing accessibility of high altitudes due to modern lifts has led to rise in individuals reaching high elevations without acclimatization or medical screening. Acute exposure to hypobaric hypoxia induces hemodynamic and metabolic stress, increasing blood pressure (BP) and heart rate while reducing oxygen saturation. These effects are particularly concerning for individuals with preexisting cardiovascular diseases. METHODS: We conducted an observational cross-sectional study at the base station (1300 m) of the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car, evaluating the demographic and c

Maternal morbidity profile in hospitalizations in the Unified Health System in São Paulo, Brazil: Analysis using data mining, 2014 to 2019.

In Brazil, approximately 80% of births are publicly funded and are registered in the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH/SUS). The SIH/SUS has morbidity data, but its use for maternal morbidity surveillance is still limited. The objective of this study was to apply data mining techniques to identify diagnoses registered in the SIH/SUS that alone or together are associated with maternal death. Obstetric hospitalizations at SIH/SUS of women aged 10-49 years from the largest state in Brazil (São Paulo) from 2014 to 2019 were analysed. Diagnoses were classified into 12 gr
