[Mechanisms disordering wound healing on the lip after bilateral crossing of the inferior alveolar nerve and experimental validation of correction methods].

The mechanisms of lip wound healing after bilateral crossing of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) were studied on Chinchilla rabbits in 3 experimental series, 6 animals per series. In group 1 bilateral crossing of IAN was carried out, in group 2 bilateral crossing of IAN was paralleled by removal of a mucous flap in the middle of the lower lip, and in group 3 the same wound as in group 2 was created, after which the wounds in this group were daily treated with a special ointment and a single injection of lidocaine (1% solution) under the wound. The nerve crossing led to development of ulcer on…

Soft tissue profile changes of the midface in patients with cleft lip and palate following maxillary distraction osteogenesis: a preliminary study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine preoperative to postoperative changes of soft tissue profiles in the midface of cleft patients who underwent maxillary distraction. STUDY DESIGN: Nine cleft patients were examined (distraction group). Lateral cephalograms were obtained preoperatively and 6 months after distraction. Changes in the positions of soft and hard tissue landmarks, the nasolabial angle, and facial height were investigated and compared with those in 9 other cleft patients who underwent conventional maxillary advancement (conventional group). RESULTS: Anterior change

Ku protein and DNA strand breaks in lip glands of normal and primary Sjögren's syndrome subjects: lack of correlation with apoptosis.

UNLABELLED: The aim was to examine tissue expression of Ku protein in lower lip salivary gland (LSG) biopsies from cases of primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and from normal subjects. METHODS: immunohistochemistry was used with antibodies to Ku70/86 and also Ki67, PCNA and p53. In addition, the Klenow method was applied in order to detect evidence of apoptosis. Sections of hyperplastic tonsil served as additional controls. RESULTS: in normal controls, LSG acinar cells stained negatively whereas LSG excretory duct cell nuclei stained positively with Ku and Klenow and occasionally with PCNA but …

Comparisons of speech aerodynamics and lateral craniofacial cephalometrics in cleft lip and palate patients with and without Finnish /r/-sound distortion.

To study the associations between the articulation of the Finnish /r/ sound and dentofacial and pharyngeal lateral cephalometric morphology and speech physiology, 18 (12 females, 6 males) young adult cleft patients' /r/ sound was analysed auditorily by 3 speech experts. Laryngeal resistance (LARE), the smallest nasal cross-sectional area (NASA), nasal resistance (NASAR) and velopharyngeal orifice area (VEPA) were measured with pressure flow technique, and 31 points were identified from the lateral cephalograms to landmark the skeletal structure, pharyngeal airway diameters, and position of the

A randomised prospective clinical trial into the effect of infant orthopaedics on maxillary arch dimensions in unilateral cleft lip and palate (Dutchcleft).

Aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of infant orthopaedics (IO) on maxillary dimensions in infants with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). The study design was a prospective two-arm randomised controlled trial in parallel with three participating academic Cleft Palate Centres. Treatment was assigned by means of a computerised balanced allocation method. One group (IO+) wore passive maxillary plates during the first year of life, the other group (IO-) did not. Maxillary casts, made at birth, and at 15, 24, 48, 78 wk were digitised three-dimensionally. Before lip closure alveolar, m…

Control of repetitive lip and finger movements in Parkinson's disease: influence of external timing signals and simultaneous execution on motor performance.

This study addresses the question of whether external timing signals and/or simultaneous rhythmic movements of other limbs can alleviate sequencing motor deficits associated with Parkinson's disease (PD). Subjects performed rhythmic lip and finger movements simultaneously or in isolation. In addition, they had to self-pace their movements or match them to an external signal. Our results are summarized as follows: (1) Seven of 12 patients had adequate mean repetition rates; that is, they fulfilled the task requirements on a global scale. The remaining five patients had various degrees of hasten…

Pre-speech in children with cleft lip and palate or cleft palate only: phonetic analysis related to morphologic and functional factors.

Pre-speech in 35 children with clefts of the lip and palate or palate only were analyzed for place and manner of articulation. Transcriptions were made from tape recorded babbling sequences. Two children without clefts were used as reference. All of the children with clefts were treated according to a regimen of early surgical repair of the velum cleft and delayed closure of the cleft in the hard palate. The frequency of selected phonetic features was calculated. Correlations between phonetic/perceptual and functional and morphological factors were tested. Supraglottal articulation dominated a…

The effects of lip repair with and without soft-tissue undermining and delayed palate repair on maxillary growth: an experimental study in beagles.

Undermining of the soft tissue on the surface of the maxilla at the time of cleft lip repair remains a controversial issue in cleft management. Using 64 eight-week-old beagles, we tested the hypothesis that lip repair with soft-tissue undermining contributes more to maxillofacial growth aberrations than lip repair without these additional procedures. Animals were assigned to four groups: unoperated controls, unrepaired controls, and two experimental groups (with and without undermining). Defects simulating cleft of the lip, alveolus, and palate were surgically created in the unrepaired and exp…

Intercanine widening and sagittal effect of maxillary transverse expansion in patients with cleft lip and palate during the deciduous and mixed dentitions.

Since 1977 cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients with maxillary deficiency have received an interceptive orthopedic treatment consisting of (a) transverse expansion, (b) protraction, and (c) fixed retention. Ideally the treatment should be completed early enough to permit spontaneous eruption of the maxillary permanent incisors into normal occlusion without orthodontic intervention. The early transverse expansion considerably increases space so that unerupted malpositioned incisors spread out spontaneously, creating optimal conditions for eruption and root formation. Dental diagnosis in the clef…

A six-center international study of treatment outcome in patients with clefts of the lip and palate: Part 3. Dental arch relationships.

One hundred and forty-nine dental casts of subjects with complete unilateral clefts of the lip and palate from six European cleft palate centers were assessed by means of the Goslon Yardstick. The Yardstick proved capable of discriminating between the quality of the dental arch relationships between the six centers. Two centers showed especially poor results. Three centers obtained satisfactory results although differing surgical techniques were used in these centers. One of the centers showing satisfactory dental arch relationships employed a more complex and expensive treatment program than …

An unknown syndrome of nose deformity, oxycephaly, aplasia of the nasolacrimal ducts, and symmetrical cyst formation on the upper lip in siblings: craniorhiny.

An unknown syndrome of oxycephaly, nose deformity, hair growth on the skin at the base of the nose, symmetrical cyst formation on the upper lip, and aplasia of the nasolacrimal ducts in a mother and her three children is presented. This syndrome showed autosomal dominant inheritance. All three children were operated on. Oxycephaly and lip deformity in two of the children and hypertelorism that existed in addition to the other anomalies in the third were all corrected. All corrective surgery was performed during a single session for each child.

Immunologic characterization of the mononuclear cell infiltrates in rheumatoid synovia, in rheumatoid nodules, and in lip biopsies from patients with Sjögren's syndrome.

Two subcutaneous rheumatoid nodules and 8 rheumatoid synovia from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA); and 2 parotid glands, 1 "pseudolymphoma," and 6 lip biopsies from patients with Sjogren's syndrome (SS) were studied to identify mononuclear cells. The palisading mononuclear cells in subcutaneous nodules had a surface membrane receptor for complement. B lymphocytes surrounded by larger numbers of non-B lymphocytes were found in RA synovium and between salivary ducts of SS lip biopsies. A "pseudolymphoma" obtained from a patient with SS consisted primarily of B lymphocytes. The predominan…

Cleft Lip and Palate is Common in PORCN-Related Focal Dermal Hypoplasia in Asians: Three New Case Reports and Literature Review.

Focal dermal hypoplasia is an X-linked dominant genetic disorder predominantly affecting females, caused by loss-of-function variants in the PORCN gene, characterized by ectodermal, skeletal, craniofacial and ocular structural abnormalities. We report three cases with de novo novel variants, and performed a comprehensive review of the clinical features of this disorder focusing on Asian patients, and identified significant differences compared with previous literature focusing on Caucasian patients. Cleft lip and palate is a frequently reported feature in Asian patients, but not in Caucasians.…

Lip Pressure, Bite Force and Denture Use as Predictors of Oral Frailty in Physically Active Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Oral frailty is an emerging determinant of late-life disability. While objective functional measures have been proposed as key indicators, their combined role in predicting frailty among physically active older adults remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between the presence of oral frailty and lip pressure, bite force, and denture use. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 192 participants aged 60 years or older from Brazil (n = 131) and Portugal (n = 61), all physically active and with ≥20 natural or rehabilitated teeth. Data were col…

Marginal Orbicularis Oris Hyperactivity (MOOH): An Exploratory Case Series of Inversion-Dominant Upper Lip Dynamics Following Intraoral Botulinum Toxin Type A.

Excessive gingival display (EGD) is most commonly attributed to vertical upper lip elevation, short lip length, or dentoalveolar disproportion. However, some patients exhibit gingival or mucosal visibility during smiling despite minimal vertical upper lip displacement, suggesting the presence of alternative dynamic patterns. This exploratory case series examined an inversion-dominant smile presentation and its documented modulation in association with conservative intraoral chemodenervation directed toward the marginal region of the orbicularis oris. Ninety-four patients with dynamic inversion…
