Methicillin resistance mediated by the mecA gene in Staphylococcus aureus, also known as "true MRSA", is typically associated with high oxacillin MIC values (≥8 mg/L). Because non-mecA-mediated oxacillin resistant S. aureus phenotypes can also cause hard-to-treat diseases in humans, their misidentification as methicillin-susceptible S. aureus strains (MSSA) can compromise the efficiency of the antimicrobial therapy. These strains have been refereed as Borderline Oxacillin-Resistant S. aureus (BORSA) but their characterization and role in clinical microbiology have been neglected. Considering t

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that often causes nosocomial infections resistant to treatment. Rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are increasing, as are rates of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and possible extensively drug-resistant (XDR) infections. Our objective was to characterize the molecular epidemiology and AMR mechanisms of this pathogen. We sequenced the whole genome for each of 176 P. aeruginosa isolates collected in the Philippines in 2013-2014; derived the multilocus sequence type (MLST), presence of AMR determinants and relatedness between isolates; and determ

Omadacycline (OMC) showed better in vitro potency than daptomycin (DAP) or vancomycin (VAN) against Vanr, Ampr, DAP-nonsusceptible, linezolid-resistant, cfr(B)+ Enterococcus faecium strains. In a mouse peritonitis model, OMC also showed significantly better animal survival during the study and at its end than DAP or VAN with these E. faecium strains. However, OMC, DAP, and VAN showed comparable in vitro and in vivo efficacies against a non-vancomycin-resistant, tetracycline-resistant, DAP-susceptible E. faecium strain.

BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli (E. coli) causes serious health problems due to the high rate of its resistance to common antibiotics. AmpC β-lactamases are important cephalosporinases, encoded by E. coli chromosome, that cause resistance to cefoxitin, cephalothin, most penicillins, cefazolin, and beta-lactamase inhibitor-beta-lactams. This study aimed to detect AmpC β-lactamases among E. coli strains at three educational hospitals in Iran.
METHODS: Two hundred and thirty samples were recovered from the three educational hospitals in Zahedan City in southeast Iran. Sixty E. coli strains were ide

Streptococcus pyogenes is an important human pathogen worldwide. The identification of natural antibacterial phytochemicals has renewed interest due to the current scarcity of antibiotic development. Carvacrol is a monoterpenoid found in herbs. We evaluated carvacrol alone and combined with selected antibiotics against four strains of S. pyogenes in vitro. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of carvacrol against S. pyogenes were 125 µg/mL (0.53 mM) and 250 µg/mL (1.05 mM), respectively. Kill curve results showed that carvacrol exhibits instan

BACKGROUND: Novel treatment strategies to slow the continued emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae are urgently needed. A molecular assay that predicts in vitro ciprofloxacin susceptibility is now available but has not been systematically studied in human infections.
METHODS: Using a genotypic polymerase chain reaction assay to determine the status of the N. gonorrhoeae gyrase subunit A serine 91 codon, we conducted a multisite prospective clinical study of the efficacy of a single oral dose of ciprofloxacin 500 mg in patients with culture-positive gonorrhe

We monitored antimicrobial susceptibility developments of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Germany from January 2014 to May 2021. The proportion of isolates with azithromycin minimum inhibitory concentrations above the epidemiological cut-off increased substantially, from 1.3% in 2014 to 12.2% in 2020. Preliminary data from 2021 showed a further rise (January to May: 20.7%). Therefore, azithromycin as part of the recommended dual therapy in Germany for non-adherent patients is challenged. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing in clinical practice is crucial and continuous susceptibility surveillance in

Streptococcus pneumoniae is an important causal agent of pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, bacteremia, and otitis media. Penicillin resistance rates in S. pneumoniae have remained stable in Argentina in the last years. In the late '90s more isolates with MIC of penicillin ≥2μg/ml were observed; however, their frequency has decreased in recent years. The phenotypic expression of penicillin resistance is due to a modification in penicillin-binding proteins associated with a mosaic structure in the coding genes. The expansion of successful resistant clones varies among the different regions and is i

Enterococcus spp. is a common commensal microorganism, however, some strains can cause opportunistic infections in humans. Treatment of Enterococcus faecium-related endocarditis, urinary and genital tract infections, meningitis, septicemia, and even neonatal sepsis is often complicated by antibiotic resistance. The spread of multi-resistant bacterial strains has renewed interest in phage therapy, which has many advantages: Its advantages include a much lower frequency of resistance development compared to antibiotics and strict specificity, which allows affecting of only their target microbes

Worldwide, there have been few reports of β-lactamases causing penicillin resistance in Neisseria meningitidis. The first known case of disease in the United States due to a β-lactamase-producing, ciprofloxacin-resistant N. meningitidis was recently identified. This has potential implications on standard laboratory testing and empiric management of meningococcal disease.

INTRODUCTION: Enteric fever caused by Salmonella enterica continues to be a major public health problem worldwide. In the last decade, ceftriaxone and azithromycin have become the drugs of choice for treating enteric fever caused by Nalidixic acid resistant Salmonella (NARS) enterica. This has led to reports of drug resistance to both drugs. Since enteric fever is endemic in India, accurate drug susceptibility surveillance is crucial to ensure empiric management of enteric fever is appropriate. The aim of this study is to evaluate the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ceftriaxone and a

Antimicrobial peptides are a new type of antibacterial drugs with a broad antibacterial spectrum. Based on our previous research, PMAP-23RI-Dec was designed by modifying the C-terminal of PMAP-23RI with decanoic acid. In this study, we measured the antibacterial activity, stability, hemolysis, and cytotoxicity of PMAP-23RI-Dec. The mechanism of PMAP-23RI-Dec on biofilm and cell membranes were also studied. The results show that PMAP-23RI-Dec exhibited high antibacterial activity and stability, but the hemolytic activity and cytotoxicity of PMAP-23RI-Dec were not enhanced. Moreover, PMAP-23RI-D
