Trichoderma longibrachiatum, a filamentous fungus, was recently described as an emerging pathogen in immunocompromised patients. Here, we report the first case, to our knowledge, of isolated invasive lung infection by T. longibrachiatum in a patient with hematologic malignancy. The infection mimicked invasive pulmonary aspergillosis and was successfully treated with a combination of voriconazole and caspofungin.

BACKGROUND: Procalcitonin (PCT), the precursor of the calcitonin, is synthesized in the parafollicular C-cells of the thyroid. It has been used to detect and to differentiate systemic bacterial infections from flares of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). PCT in serum increases in severe bacterial and fungal infections, but not, or only slightly in viral infections.
OBJECTIVE: To measure PCT levels in patients with active SLE and to compare them with patients without lupus activity and to determine the possible association between activity and elevation of the PCT.

In a UK-wide survey, 28% of neonatal units reported using systemic or topical/oral antifungal prophylaxis for very low birthweight infants. Systemic prophylaxis is targeted to extremely preterm infants with additional risk factors for invasive fungal infection. Currently, there seems to be sufficient variation in practice to undertake randomised trials of these interventions.

METHODS: Between November 2005 and May 2006, 14 corneal abscesses were reported at the University Hospital Center of Fort-de-France. Two strains of soil-borne Fusarium solani, both characterized for their ability to produce cyclosporin A and C, were examined for their pathogenicity in severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) and BALB/c male mice. We compared the occurrence of severe infections following 71 reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplants (PBSCT) and 123 standard myeloablative PBSCT (MINI and STAND groups, respectively) from HLA-identical siblings. BACKGROUND: Transplantation of organs from donors who are bacteremic is controversial. We examined the outcome of recipients of solid organs from donors with bacteremia and/or fungemia at the time of organ recovery.
METHODS: All organ donors from a single organ procurement organization between January 1990 and December 1996 were retrospectively analyzed. We calculated rates of transmission from bacteremic or fungemic donors to their recipients and compared the graft and patient survival rates for recipients of these organs with those for recipients of organs from non-bacteremic donors.
