Atypical neural responding to hearing one's own name in adults with ASD.

Diminished responding to hearing one's own name is one of the earliest and strongest predictors of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Here, we studied, for the first time, the neural correlates of hearing one's own name in ASD. Based on existing research, we hypothesized enhancement of late parietal positive activity specifically for the own name in neurotypicals, and for this effect to be reduced in adults with ASD. Source localization analyses were conducted to estimate group differences in brain regions underlying this effect. Twenty-one adults with ASD, and 21 age- and gender-matched neurotyp

Differential polarization of cortical pyramidal neuron dendrites through weak extracellular fields.

The rise of transcranial current stimulation (tCS) techniques have sparked an increasing interest in the effects of weak extracellular electric fields on neural activity. These fields modulate ongoing neural activity through polarization of the neuronal membrane. While the somatic polarization has been investigated experimentally, the frequency-dependent polarization of the dendritic trees in the presence of alternating (AC) fields has received little attention yet. Using a biophysically detailed model with experimentally constrained active conductances, we analyze the subthreshold response of

Increased anterior cingulate cortex response precedes behavioural adaptation in anorexia nervosa.

Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) are characterised by increased self-control, cognitive rigidity and impairments in set-shifting, but the underlying neural mechanisms are poorly understood. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to elucidate the neural correlates of behavioural adaptation to changes in reward contingencies in young acutely ill AN patients. Thirty-six adolescent/young adult, non-chronic female AN patients and 36 age-matched healthy females completed a well-established probabilistic reversal learning task during fMRI. We analysed hemodynamic responses in em

Common and distinct brain regions in both parietal and frontal cortex support symbolic and nonsymbolic number processing in humans: A functional neuroimaging meta-analysis.

In recent years, there has been substantial growth in neuroimaging studies investigating neural correlates of symbolic (e.g. Arabic numerals) and non-symbolic (e.g. dot arrays) number processing. At present it remains contested whether number is represented abstractly, or if number representations in the brain are format-dependent. In order to quantitatively evaluate the available neuroimaging evidence, we used activation likelihood estimation (ALE) to conduct quantitative meta-analyses of the results reported in 57 neuroimaging papers. Consistent with the existence of an abstract representati

Transcriptional Responses and Mechanisms of Copper-Induced Dysfunctional Locomotor Behavior in Zebrafish Embryos.

Copper-induced delayed hatching and dysfunctional movement had been reported previously, and unbalanced free copper was found in the body of humans with Alzheimer's disease and other neural diseases, but details of the underlying mechanisms are still unknown. In this study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos exposed to over 3.9 μM of copper-exhibited delayed hatching and significantly dysfunctional movement. Using high-throughput in situ hybridization screening and by conducting an in-depth analysis of gene characterization in embryos exposed to copper, we found that copper caused neural crest de

Medial prefrontal dysfunction and prolonged amygdala response during instructed fear processing in borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Affective dysregulation is a clinical hallmark of borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study used an instructed fear task combined with functional MRI (fMRI) and skin conductance response (SCR) to test hypotheses about mechanisms of disturbed fronto-limbic neural circuitry underlying dysfunctional emotional processing in BPD. METHODS: Female BPD patients and matched control subjects were exposed to two visual stimuli during fMRI scanning and SCR recording. Subjects were instructed shortly before scanning that one stimulus (Threat) potentially represents an aversive event wh

Thymic Hassall's bodies of children with congenital heart defects.

The development of the thymus and heart are closely related while in both, the neural crest cells play an important role. In our preliminary study, the thymic microscopic structures of the infant's thymuses with the congenital heart defects were observed. The study was conducted on 36 specimens of newborn thymuses removed due to surgery for cardiovascular malformations. Standard formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue technique was used. Five-microm-thick sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and the microscopic examination was focused on the structure of Hassall's bodies. The Hassa

Neuroimaging in sleep medicine.

The development of neuroimaging techniques has made possible the characterization of cerebral function throughout the sleep-wake cycle in normal human subjects. Indeed, human brain activity during sleep is segregated within specific cortical and subcortical areas in relation to the sleep stage, sleep physiological events and previous waking activity. This approach has allowed sleep physiological theories developed from animal data to be confirmed, but has also introduced original concepts about the neurobiological mechanisms of sleep, dreams and memory in humans. In contrast, at present, few n

Age-related structural and functional changes in the cochlear nucleus.

Presbycusis - age-related hearing loss - is a key communication disorder and chronic medical condition of our aged population. The cochlear nucleus is the major site of projections from the auditory portion of the inner ear. Relative to other levels of the peripheral and central auditory systems, relatively few studies have been conducted examining age-related changes in the cochlear nucleus. The neurophysiological investigations suggest declines in glycine-mediated inhibition, reflected in increased firing rates in cochlear nucleus neurons from old animals relative to young adults. Biochemica

alpha-Fetoprotein in the routine clinical laboratory: evaluation of a simple radioimmunoassay and review of current concepts in its clinical application.

We have assessed the clinical utility of a radioimmunoassay for alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). The method, which relies on ammonium sulfate precipitation for the separation of "bound" and "free" radiolabeled antigen, can be completed in one working day. The assay is specific for AFP, has a sensitivity of < 10 ng/ml, and has intra- and inter-assay precision of 5--8% and 9--11%, respectively. We have conducted a three-year study of 472 pregnancies in which physicians wished to detect neural tube defects, and of 400 non-pregnant patients to assess the value of serum AFP as a marker for certain benign a

BACKGROUND: Poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) has an incidence rate ranging from 24% to 80.97%. It reduces survival rates and increases disability among stroke patients, posing a substantial socioeconomic burden. Current treatments for PSCI primarily involve medication and rehabilitation; however, therapeutic efficacy remains limited, with unsatisfactory improvement in activities of daily living. This study aims to conduct a prospective clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of 40-Hz sensory stimulation-induced gamma oscillations in the treatment of PSCI, including assessment

Utilizing fNIRS to investigate the impact of calligraphy training on cognitive and upper limb motor function in stroke patients: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability, often resulting in cognitive and upper limb motor impairments that significantly impact activities of daily living. While conventional rehabilitation approaches have shown effectiveness, challenges such as high cost, limited accessibility, and poor adherence hinder their widespread implementation. Calligraphy training has emerged as a promising rehabilitation strategy, offering a multimodal intervention that integrates motor and cognitive processes. However, the underlying neural mechanisms and the combined effects of calligraphy t

The basis for using bone-conducted vibration or air-conducted sound to test otolithic function.

Extracellular single neuron recordings of primary vestibular neurons in Scarpa's ganglion in guinea pigs show that low-intensity 500 Hz bone-conducted vibration (BCV) or 500 Hz air-conducted sound (ACS) activate a high proportion of otolith irregular neurons from the utricular and saccular maculae but few semicircular canal neurons. In alert guinea pigs, and humans, 500 Hz BCV elicits otolith-evoked eye movements. In humans, it also elicits a myogenic potential on tensed sternocleidomastoid muscles. Although BCV and ACS activate both utricular and saccular maculae, it is possible to probe the

Transient otoacoustic emissions in children with chronic renal failure.

This study was conducted on 34 children with chronic renal failure: 27 on regular haemodialysis and seven on conservative treatment. Twenty normal healthy children served as controls. They were subjected to clinical examination including otoscopic examination, basic audiological assessment and transient otoacoustic emission testing (TOAE). Four patients had a conductive hearing loss and five had a bilateral moderately severe high frequency sensory neural hearing loss. TOAE testing was carried out for the rest whose ears displayed normal hearing. No response (fail) was obtained in 8% of them bu

Simultaneous PET/fMRI distinguishes the separate and synergistic effects of T2DM and MCI on cerebral glucose metabolism and fALFF.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a recognized risk factor for mild cognitive impairment (MCI), yet the combined effects of T2DM and MCI on cerebral metabolism and neural activity remain poorly characterized. Fifty-four participants were categorized into four groups based on the presence of T2DM and MCI. Simultaneous positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to assess cerebral glucose metabolism and the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF). The main and interactive effects of T2DM and MCI were evaluated using the two-way
