Glucose and Oxygen Availability Shape Growth and Architecture of Tumor Spheroids in a Microfluidic 3D Model.

Glucose and oxygen availability are fundamental drivers of tumor progression, deeply influencing cancer cell proliferation, metabolism, and spatial organization. In this study, we present a simplified microfluidic-based 3D model of tumorigenesis that allows for controlled and dynamic analysis of key tumor parameters under metabolic stress. Using this platform, lung adenocarcinoma (A549) spheroids embedded in a collagen-based extracellular matrix were monitored over time to assess growth kinetics, hypoxic response via HIF-1α expression, and structural organization. A multifactorial experimental

Season and oxygen tension during maturation and fertilization impact the developmental competence of bovine oocytes.

Seasonal heat stress (HS) can reduce the developmental competence of bovine oocytes used for in vitro embryo production. Atmospheric oxygen tension (20% O2), commonly used for in vitro maturation and fertilization (IVM/IVF), may also influence embryo development and quality. This study investigated whether oxygen tension during IVM/IVF affects the developmental competence of bovine oocytes collected in summer and winter. Oocytes were matured and fertilized under physiological (5% O2) or atmospheric oxygen tension. Summer conditions showed a significantly higher temperature-humidity index than

Hydrogenolysis of Aromatic Oxygenates Over Pt/WO3-ZrO2 in a Water/Decane Biphasic System.

The hydrogenolysis of lignin-derived aromatic oxygenates into aromatic hydrocarbons under mild conditions remains a significant challenge due to competing over-hydrogenation of the aromatic ring. Here, we report a highly active and water-tolerant Pt/WO3-ZrO2 catalyst that enables the conversion of a broad range of aromatic oxygenates into aromatic hydrocarbons in a water/decane biphasic system at 90 °C under ambient pressure with a H2 partial pressure of only 0.1 atm. The biphasic environment efficiently suppresses side reactions by continuously extracting the arene products into the organic p

Platinum-Based Intermetallic Compounds: Synthesis Strategies, Structural Ordering, and Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis.

Platinum-based intermetallic compounds have emerged as promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), as their ordered atomic arrangements enable effective modulation of electronic structure while offering improved durability compared with conventional Pt alloys. Atomic ordering improves structural stability and modulates ligand and strain effects, facilitating optimized adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates and improved ORR kinetics. This review summarizes recent advances in the synthesis of Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals, covering low- and high-temperature s

A generalized phenomenological model of oxygen depletion for FLASH particle radiotherapy: evidence fromin vitrodata.

Ultra-high dose rate (uHDR: FLASH) radiotherapy reduces normal tissue toxicity while preserving tumour control. The oxygen depletion hypothesis posits that rapid oxygen consumption during FLASH irradiation transiently reduces radiosensitivity. However, experimental measurements suggest oxygen depletion may be limited, particularly under normoxia. This study quantitatively assesses the adequacy of this hypothesis in reproducing experimentally observed sparing effects by comparing mechanistic simulations with in vitro cell survival data across a wide range of irradiation conditions.

Mechanism of molecular oxygen adsorption and desorption on the defective YCrO3 (100) surface: a DFT study.

Density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate the adsorption and desorption of molecular oxygen on the defective YCrO3(100) surface. The formation energy of a surface oxygen vacancy was calculated to be 2.23 eV, substantially lower than the corresponding value in the bulk crystal. Adsorption of an oxygen molecule at the vacancy results in the formation of an asymmetric bridge configuration involving covalent bonding to a surface chromium atom. Desorption proceeds through a transition to a terminal adsorption geometry accompanied by electron-density redistribution and the

Physiological media and oxygen levels modulate cancer hallmarks in cultured breast cancer cells.

The concepts of physioxia and physiological media for mammalian cell culture have gained attention over the past several years. Although the effects of oxygen tension or nutrient composition have been examined individually, their combined, large-scale impacts on cancer cell biology remain poorly understood. Here, we integrated transcriptomic, proteomic, and functional analyses to assess how oxygen levels (18% vs. 5% O2) and medium composition (DMEM vs. Plasmax) influence human breast cancer (MCF7) cells. We found that culturing MCF7 cells in physioxia (5% O2) and Plasmax medium induces a trans

Two Cases of Kounis Syndrome Caused by Contrast Medium: Early Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.

In cardiology, Kounis syndrome (KS), also known as allergic angina or myocardial infarction, is often overlooked in emergencies. Its pathophysiology differs from that of allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis, making differentiation essential. We aimed to report two cases of KS that progressed to cardiac arrest, following the use of contrast medium. In both cases, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was used for resuscitation, and coronary artery bypass graft surgery was planned for coronary artery reconstruction. ECMO should be considered in severe cases of KS, and clinicians should re

Morphology-phase coevolution driven by oxygen chemical potential in Fe3O4/α-Fe2O3 nanosheets.

Studies on the morphology and phase of two-dimensional (2D) non-van der Waals iron oxides are often carried out independently, leaving their coupling relationship unexplored. Herein, we report an oxygen-potential-driven chemical vapor deposition (CVD) route that couples morphology control with phase selection in the same system. We vary only the quartz-tube outer diameter to modulate the oxygen flux, which tunes the oxygen chemical potential (μO) without requiring any sophisticated oxygen supplying equipment and transforms the product from magnetite (Fe3O4) to hematite (α-Fe2O3). With increasi

Clinically significant posture-related oxygen saturation variability in Fontan circulation: prevalence and determinants.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Fontan circulation often have low baseline oxygen saturation (SpO2), and posture-related SpO2 variability is sometimes observed in clinical practice. However, the prevalence and determinants of clinically significant posture-related SpO2 variability have not been systematically investigated. METHODS: This observational study included 103 patients with Fontan circulation and 166 patients after biventricular repair. After 1:1 propensity score matching by age and sex, 103 patients in each group were analyzed. SpO2 was measured in the sitting and supine positions, and th

Advances in the Rational Design, Mechanisms, and Applications of Lanthanide Nanoparticles for the Regulation of Reactive Oxygen Species.

Lanthanide nanoparticles provide an ideal platform for the precise regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to their reversible redox properties, photomagnetic characteristics, and functionalizable surfaces. This review summarizes recent advances in the mechanistic understanding, biomedical applications, and material design strategies of lanthanide nanoparticles for ROS modulation. Mechanistically, lanthanide nanoparticles generate ROS through photoexcited electron transfer, Fenton-like reactions, and ligand-mediated redox cycling, while also effectively scavenging ROS via reversible va

Licoricidin triggers reactive oxygen species-mediated PANoptosis in human hepatocellular carcinoma cells.

Licoricidin (LCD), a natural isoflavonoid compound extracted from Glycyrrhiza species, has been extensively demonstrated to possess diverse biological activities, including anti-inflammatory and potent anti-cancer effects. However, the precise mechanism underlying LCD action against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear, particularly regarding its regulation of cell death. In this study, we comprehensively explored the effects of LCD on HCC cells in vitro and investigated its role and mechanism of action in the induction of PANoptosis. Our results reveal that LCD exhibited potent anti
