Reevaluating the Use of Sound Therapy for Tinnitus Management: Perspectives on Relevant Systematic Reviews.

PURPOSE: Tinnitus is a highly prevalent condition that can severely reduce health functioning. In spite of extant clinical practice guidelines (CPGs), implementation of these CPGs is relatively uncommon. As a result, patients seeking professional services for tinnitus often have no assurance of receiving evidence-based care. The purpose of this tutorial was to clarify the evidence for sound therapy so that it may be included in future CPGs for tinnitus. METHOD: "Best clinical evidence" is obtained from high-quality systematic reviews, which are generally considered the highest level of eviden

United European Gastroenterology (UEG) and European Society for Neurogastroenterology and Motility (ESNM) consensus on functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is one of the most common conditions in clinical practice. In spite of its prevalence, FD is associated with major uncertainties in terms of its definition, underlying pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. METHODS: A Delphi consensus was initiated with 41 experts from 22 European countries who conducted a literature summary and voting process on 87 statements. Quality of evidence was evaluated using the grading of recommendations, assessment, development, and evaluation (GRADE) criteria. Consensus (defined as >80% agreement) was reached fo

Early Detection of Prescription Drug Abuse Using Doctor Shopping Monitoring From Claims Databases: Illustration From the Experience of the French Addictovigilance Network.

Opioid analgesics and maintenance treatments, benzodiazepines and z-drugs, and other sedatives and stimulants are increasingly being abused to induce psychoactive effects or alter the effects of other drugs, eventually leading to dependence. Awareness of prescription drug abuse has been increasing in the last two decades, and organizations such as the International Narcotics Control Board has predicted that, worldwide, prescription drug abuse may exceed the use of illicit drugs. Assessment of prescription drug abuse tackles an issue that is hidden by nature, which therefore requires a specific

Monitoring surgical quality: the cumulative sum (CUSUM) approach.

Monitoring the quality of new or ongoing surgical activities is a necessity. Several Statistical Process Control (SPC) tools are available to professionals. Among them, Shewhart charts and cumulative sum charts (CUSUM charts) are useful methods to provide visual feedback before significant quality issues arise. In this paper, we discuss both methods based on our current approach. On Shewhart charts, one variable value is plotted on a time-series line. This method provides information about every single determination. Random variations of the values appear and by adjusting the adequate control

Service dogs and people with physical disabilities partnerships: a systematic review.

Occupational therapists have recognized the benefits that service dogs can provide people with disabilities. There are many anecdotal publications extolling the benefits of working with service dogs, but few rigorous studies exist to provide the evidence of the usefulness of this type of assistive technology option. This systematic review evaluates the published research that supports the use of service dogs for people with mobility-related physical disabilities. Articles were identified by computerized search of PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, OT Seeker, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews,

Health literacy strengths and needs among migrant communities from Portuguese-speaking African countries in Portugal: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Health literacy among migrants is a matter of public health and social justice. Migrants from diverse backgrounds encounter challenges such as linguistic barriers, cultural disparities, restricted access to health services, and heterogeneous migration statuses. Addressing these challenges requires careful consideration of their unique experiences and needs to promote equitable health outcomes. This can hinder their ability to navigate the healthcare system, understand health information, and engage in health-promoting behaviours. However, there is still a significant gap in our u

Newborn screening for Duchenne muscular dystrophy: the perspectives of stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: The rapidly evolving clinical landscape of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is driving innovative approaches for early diagnosis through genomic newborn bloodspot screening (NBS). However, the potential impact of these programs on families and healthcare systems remains unexplored. This study assessed the perceived benefits, harms, barriers, and enablers for DMD NBS amongst primary caregivers of children with DMD and healthcare professionals (HCPs). METHODS: This Australian multi-centre cross-sectional study used a mixed-methods convergent methodology. Participants completed a co

The basic income for care leavers in Wales pilot evaluation: Protocol of a quasi-experimental evaluation.

BACKGROUND: This study will evaluate the Basic Income for Care Leavers in Wales pilot (BIP), which is the most generous basic income scheme in the world. A cohort of care-experienced young people who become aged 18 during a 12-month enrolment period (July 2022-June 2023) are receiving £1,600 (before tax) per month for two years, and the Welsh Government intends this to have a range of benefits. This evaluation will examine the impact of BIP, the implementation of the pilot and how it is experienced, and its value for money. METHODS: The study is a theory-based quasi-experimental evaluation, a

Designing a Needs-Oriented Psychological Intervention for Chinese Women Undergoing an Abortion.

Accessing good quality abortion care is a fundamental human right and contributes to achieving Sustainable Development Goals. However, well-designed abortion care that meets women's needs is limited. This study aims to systematically develop an intervention to promote the psychological well-being of Chinese women undergoing an abortion. A five-step iterative approach informed by intervention mapping was undertaken to determine the intervention design. Step 1 used in-depth interviews with 14 Chinese women undergoing an abortion to assess real-life stressors and support needs. We identified eigh

Validating laboratory defined chronic kidney disease in the electronic health record for patients in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Electronic health record (EHR) data is increasingly used to identify patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). EHR queries used to capture CKD status, identify comorbid conditions, measure awareness by providers, and track adherence to guideline-concordant processes of care have not been validated. METHODS: We extracted EHR data for primary-care patients with two eGFRcreat 15-59 mL/min/1.73 m^2 at least 90 days apart. Two nephrologists manually reviewed a random sample of 50 charts to determine CKD status, associated comorbidities, and physician awareness of CKD. We also assesse

Drug-related stigma among people who inject drugs - development and validation of the drug use stigma scale (DUSS).

Drug use is a highly stigmatized behavior, and drug-related stigma is a key driver of behavioral risk, lower health care utilization, and associated adverse health outcomes among people who inject drugs (PWID). While instruments exist for measuring drug-related stigma, their applicability to community-based PWID across multiple stigma types (enacted, anticipated, internalized) and settings (health care, society, family) is limited, as most were developed using treatment-based samples and all were developed in urban populations. This study sought to develop a Drug Use Stigma Scale (DUSS) that a

Development of a pandemic-related core set of quality indicators for quality and patient safety in University Hospitals in Germany.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic entailed a global health crisis, significantly affecting medical service delivery in Germany as well as elsewhere. While intensive care capacities were overloaded by COVID cases, not only elective cases but also non-COVID cases requiring urgent treatment unexpectedly decreased, potentially leading to a deterioration in health outcomes. However, these developments were only uncovered retrospectively. Especially university hospitals, which were meant to take on a central coordinating role, did not have detailed information on expected healthcare utilization, ava

Lived Experience of Violence Perpetrated by Treated Patients and Their Visitors in Intensive Care Units: A Qualitative Study of Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Patient and visitor violence (PVV) is a widespread problem for health professionals. Nurses working in intensive care units (ICUs) face a relatively high risk of experiencing PVV, which significantly impacts both the health of nurses and the institution as a whole. The subjective perceptions of ICU nurses regarding PVV are inadequately explored in the literature. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives, experiences, and perceptions of PVV in ICU nurses and to better understand the precipitating factors of violence. METHODS: A phenomenological qualitativ

Mapping evidence of the concomitant management of schistosomiasis by traditional health practitioners and health care professionals in communities with high prevalent infections: a systematic scoping review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is one of the most prevalent parasitic diseases in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), being regarded as a neglected tropical disease in sub-Saharan Africa. Praziquantel is the conventional treatment recommended for schistosomiasis in mainstream healthcare systems. In many poor settings, while many people reportedly use both traditional medicine and public sector mainstream healthcare systems, little is known if those infected with schistosomiasis use both African traditional and prescribed antischistosomal medicines. This review aims to map evidence of the co

Obesity: burdens of illness and strategies for prevention or management.

Obesity is a progressive disease of unwanted fat accumulation which has multiple, organ-specific pathological consequences. The manifestations of obesity occur within virtually every subspecialty of medicine or surgery and they interact importantly to accelerate the ageing process in many organs. Many of the hazards of obesity have multiple causes (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, stroke, colonic and breast cancer, urinary incontinence, tiredness, back pain, breathlessness). All of these conditions become more prevalent with age and are also more prevalent among overweight persons, particularly
