Amphetamine and naloxone were examined in place conditioning, in order to study possible interactions between endogenous opioids and catecholamines in reinforcement. Five macrolides were evaluated for anti-cryptosporidial activity in a dexamethasone-immunosuppressed rat model. All the macrolides evaluated reduced the severity of the ileal infection, but their effect on the cecal infection was variable, depending on the macrolide tested and the dose administered. The results of this study suggest that the use of some macrolides as potential anti-cryptosporidial agents warrants further investigation.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) have trophic effects on rat neocortical neurons in vitro. Concentration-response studies reveal that EGF maximally stimulates neuronal survival and process outgrowth at approximately 10 ng/ml, while the maximal effect of bFGF is seen at 10-30 ng/ml. Treatment with maximal concentrations of bFGF results in cultures containing a greater number of neurons with long processes, as well as greater branching of processes, than does treatment with EGF. When EGF and bFGF are added together to cultures the effects are not additive.

To elucidate the role of protein synthesis in the nocturnal increase of synaptic ribbons in the rat pineal gland, actinomycin-D, which inhibits transcription, and cycloheximide, an inhibitor of translation, were used. Earlier studies have shown that one week after sympathectomy in the rat, both bone apposition and resorption are significantly altered. Resorption in the incisor socket was now examined 1, 3 and 5 days after surgical sympathectomy. Morphometric analyses indicated that the total resorbing surface, active resorbing surface and number of osteoclasts per socket were increased one day after sympathectomy; the area and length of the bone surface of the socket were not significantly altered. Sympathetic denervation thus affects bone resorption within the first few hours after surgery.
