On the visibility of radiation at the human fovea.

1. Seeing-frequency functions (psi[S]) determined uniocularly for small (1.6'), brief images at the thoroughly dark-adapted human central fovea take the form of log-Gaussian integrals, for intensity or for exposure-time as the independent variable. They cannot be of Poisson type, since mean (tau') and standard deviation (sigma) are quite independently modifiable. 2. The properties of tau', the abscissa of inflection in the log-Gaussian integrals, and of sigma, are discussed in relation to customary determinations of spectral visibilities; agreements and certain necessary divergences are consid

Twelve-Year-Old Girl with Acute Macular Neuroretinopathy: A Multimodal Retinal Evaluation.

We report a 12-year-old female patient with acute macular neuroretinopathy assessed with multimodal retinal exams. Initial fluorescein angiogram and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) were both normal, and after 4 months OCT-A showed abnormal vascular flow with normal flow in superficial retina layers, choroid, and choriocapillaris.

Purtscher's retinopathy: a case of visual impairment associated with multiple trauma.

This case study describes a patient with multiple trauma associated with acute visual impairment. Funduscopic examination revealed scattered and confluent cotton wool exudates bilaterally. This retinopathy was first described by Othmar Purtscher, an Austrian ophthalmologist, in 1910, which he later referred to as "angiopathia retinae traumatica."

Inhibitors of neovascularization in relation to diabetic and other proliferative retinopathies.

The demonstration of an inhibitory effect on the potent source of corneal neovascularization which is elicited by the stromal implantation of solid tumours raises the possibility that similar inhibition may be obtained in the animal model of retinal neovascularization. A major program has been initiated to extend the inhibitor studies observed in cornea to the retina.

[The importance of OCT angiography and Doppler ultrasound methods in diagnosis of optic neuropathies].

This review of literature presents an assessment of circulatory disorders of the optic nerve and the retina in patients with optic neuropathy of different origin by ultrasound and OCTA methods, outlines basic principles of analyzing the state of blood flow in the ocular vessels, and analyzes the results of Russian and foreign research on this topic.

Bilateral macular coloboma and pigmented paravenous retinochoroidal atrophy.

A patient had bilateral macular coloboma with aggregations of pigment clumps located perivascularly, predominantly paravenously, and in other parts of the retina. The Toxoplasma IgG antibody was negative. The diagnosis of bilateral macular coloboma with pigmented paravenous retinochoroidal atrophy was made and seemed to be a developmental abnormality in origin.

[Diagnosis and etiopathogenesis of retinitis in patients with multiple sclerosis].

Presented are: the incidence, symptomatology and diagnostics together with electroretinography of retinal periphlebitis as well as retinitis and maculopathy in patients with multiple sclerosis. Particular attention is called to the histopathology of the retina in this disease. The etiopathology of retinitis and maculopathy in multiple sclerosis is still unknown. Four etiopathological hypotheses are shortly discussed.

[A case of internal ophthalmomyiasis in Kenya (author's transl)].

An unusual case of ophthalmomyiasis is reported, in which two living fly larvae were observed inside the patient's eye. One larva was removed from the anterior chamber by paracentesis; the other was destroyed on the retina by photocoagulation. The mode of infestation, clinical picture and treatment are discussed in brief.

Derivation of functional retinal endothelial cells from human pluripotent stem cells for therapeutics and modelling.

Retinal microvascular diseases involve a compromised inner blood-retina barrier (iBRB), which remains poorly understood. A renewable source of human iBRB endothelium is thus vital for advancing eye research and treatment development. Here we differentiated human induced pluripotent stem cells into retinal endothelial cells (iRECs) via the Wnt-β-catenin pathway, namely Norrin-Frizzled4 signalling. These iRECs show genetic, protein and functional fidelity as well as unique retinal features. When injected into oxygen-induced retinopathy mice, iRECs integrated into the host vascular network and re…

Protein inhibitor of retinal membrane guanylyl cyclase suppresses cGMP synthesis in photoreceptors.

Retinal membrane guanylyl cyclase (RetGC) regulated by RetGC activating proteins (GCAPs) imparts light sensitivity to rods and cones by producing cyclic GMP (cGMP) to open cGMP-gated channels in the photoreceptor outer segments. However, excessive cGMP synthesis by deregulated RetGC:GCAP complex provokes cone-rod degeneration and causes congenital blindness. We developed the first to date specific protein inhibitor of retinal guanylyl cyclase (PIGCY) capable of reducing RetGC activity in photoreceptor outer segment. PIGCY was constructed by modifying GCAP1 to eliminate its ability to activate …

Dialogue Between the Clock Gene Bmal1 and Retinopathy: What Is the Exact Relationship?

BACKGROUND: Circadian clock coordinates the physiologic and behavioral activities with a 24-hour solar rhythm to maintain the temporal homeostasis of the body. In the mammalian retina, the circadian system regulates the physiological function of this organ. The realm of ocular circadian rhythm has earned kinds of research interest as the circadian rhythms dysfunction will disrupt the retinal homeostasis. Bmal1 functions as a major transcriptional regulator of the circadian clock. RESULTS: In the retina, Bmal1 mediates the processing of light information, sustains photoreceptor viability and g…
