Narcissistic individuals exhibit poor recognition memory.

Here, we examine face memory among individuals who are self-focused and care little about others' needs: grandiose narcissists. Given narcissistic individuals' excessive self-focus and tendency to disregard the needs of others, they may struggle to recognize faces and their surrounding environment. Indeed, narcissistic individuals demonstrated worse recognition memory than non-narcissistic individuals in recognition memory tests for faces (Studies 1 [N = 332] and 2 [N = 261]). This difference also occurred for nonsocial stimuli (i.e., objects, houses, cars), suggesting a broad recognition defi

Causal inference accounts for heading perception in the presence of object motion.

The brain infers our spatial orientation and properties of the world from ambiguous and noisy sensory cues. Judging self-motion (heading) in the presence of independently moving objects poses a challenging inference problem because the image motion of an object could be attributed to movement of the object, self-motion, or some combination of the two. We test whether perception of heading and object motion follows predictions of a normative causal inference framework. In a dual-report task, subjects indicated whether an object appeared stationary or moving in the virtual world, while simultane

Genital self-mutilation.

We present a case report of a 22-year-old Nigerian student who presented to the accident and emergency unit of a Nigerian Teaching Hospital with a history of self-inflicted genital injury following a suicide attempt. He had background history of predisposition to depressive illness, a current diagnosis of a major depressive disorder, and had had two attempted suicidal episodes in the last 3 months prior to this event. The clinical finding shows a patient with sad affect, feeling of hopelessness, and worthlessness; however, the vital signs remained fairly stable. At examination under anesthesia

Evaluation of Geese Theatre's Re-Connect program: addressing resettlement issues in prison.

This study examined the impact of Geese Theatre's Re-Connect program on a sample of offenders who attended it. This program used theatre performance, experiential exercises, skills practice role-plays, and metaphors such as the masks to invite a group of offenders to consider and explore issues connected with their release and reconnecting with a life outside prison. Pre- and postprogram psychometric tests, behavior ratings, and interviews were completed to assess the effectiveness of the program. Significant changes were observed from pre- to posttreatment in terms of self-efficacy, motivatio

Teacher attitudes toward dyslexia: effects on teacher expectations and the academic achievement of students with dyslexia.

The present study examined teacher attitudes toward dyslexia and the effects of these attitudes on teacher expectations and the academic achievement of students with dyslexia compared to students without learning disabilities. The attitudes of 30 regular education teachers toward dyslexia were determined using both an implicit measure and an explicit, self-report measure. Achievement scores for 307 students were also obtained. Implicit teacher attitudes toward dyslexia related to teacher ratings of student achievement on a writing task and also to student achievement on standardized tests of s

Evidence of reduced complexity in self-report data from patients with medically unexplained symptoms.

Physical symptoms which cannot be adequately explained by organic disease are a common problem in all fields of medicine. Reduced complexity, shown using nonlinear dynamic analysis, has been found to be associated with a wide range of illnesses. These methods have been applied to short time series of mood but not to self-rated physical symptoms. We tested the hypothesis that self-reported medically unexplained physical symptoms display reduced complexity by measuring the approximate entropy of self-reported emotions and physical symptoms collected twice daily over 12 weeks and comparing the re

A twin study investigating the genetic and environmental aetiologies of parent, teacher and child ratings of autistic-like traits and their overlap.

In the present study we investigated phenotypic agreement between informants (parent, teacher and child self-report) on ratings of autistic-like traits and compared the genetic and environmental aetiologies of the informants' ratings and of their covariance. Parents and teachers of >2,500 pairs from a community twin sample completed an abbreviated Childhood Asperger Syndrome Test (CAST). The twins also completed an adapted self-report version of the CAST. Structural equation model-fitting was carried out. Correlations between raters were significant but moderate (0.16-0.33). The magnitude of h

An audiotaped mental health evaluation tool for Hispanic immigrants with a range of literacy levels.

Debilitating mental illness is treatable if found. There is no validated self-administered mental illness evaluation tool for immigrant Hispanic farm workers with variable literacy levels. This study tested sensitivity and specificity of an audiotaped survey developed for low literacy levels compared with standard interview instruments. Subjects from 11 migrant camps completed a self-administered audiotaped survey in Spanish to diagnose major depression, substance abuse, panic and generalized anxiety, and domestic violence. Primary care clinics assisted in finding camps and provided follow-up

From dissociation to trauma? Individual differences in dissociation as predictor of 'trauma' perception.

In clinical literature, dissociative complaints are generally considered to be the result of traumatic experiences. However, it has been argued that dissociative complaints, in turn, may indulge over-reporting of traumatic experiences. Hence, correlations between dissociation and self-reported trauma may not only reflect the causal path from trauma to dissociation, but possibly also an increased trauma-item endorsement due to dissociation. To test the idea that dissociation fosters a positive response bias on trauma self-reports, participants completed a dissociation scale, and subsequently ra

Bulimia nervosa following psychological and multiple child abuse: support for the self-medication hypothesis in a population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To unravel the complex role of child abuse as a risk factor for bulima nervosa (BN), from the perspective of the self-medication hypothesis which asserts that in abused BN cases binge eating is primarily a way of coping with the anxiety or mood disorders that stem from the abuse. METHOD: In a population-based study (N = 1,987) DSM-III-R diagnoses were assessed with the CIDI. Differences in exposure rates to child abuse between BN cases versus healthy, psychiatric, substance use, and dual diagnosis controls were employed to test the self-medication hypothesis. RESULTS: A history of

Services research outcomes study: overview of drug treatment population and outcomes.

The study examined a representative sample of the 1,060,000 individuals discharged from drug user treatment in the United States in the 12 months before September 1990, and compared self-reports of behavior 5 years before to 5 years after treatment. Self-reports about recent drug use were compared with urine samples, and the agreement between self-report and drug-test results was high. The key findings are that the number of alcohol and drug users declined markedly, ranging from one-seventh to more than one half; those who continued using drugs after treatment used them less frequently than be

A comparison of cognitive and guided mastery therapy of agoraphobia.

The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of cognitive and performance-based therapy of agoraphobia. Fifty-two patients suffering from panic disorder with moderate or severe agoraphobia and considering agoraphobia as their main problem were randomly assigned to receive either cognitive therapy or guided mastery therapy in a six-week inpatient group program. Significantly more of the cognitive therapy patients attained high endstate functioning, whereas the proportion of responders in the two groups did not differ. An overall test revealed no differences between the two treatment groups

Investigation of supramolecular self-assembly in traditional Chinese medicine by computer simulations.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) supramolecular assemblies are commonly found in TCM decoctions. As a form of the material basis for pharmacological efficacy, TCM supramolecular assemblies not only enhance therapeutic effects and reduce toxicity but also represent an important manifestation of the "integration of medicine and adjuvant" characteristic of TCM components. However, current research rarely focuses on the structural features of TCM components capable of forming supramolecular assemblies, and there is a lack of guiding principles for screening self-assembling components. Evaluating
