We describe the seasonal variation of acute toxoplasmosis in the United States. Acute toxoplasmic lymphadenopathy (ATL) can be a surrogate of acute toxoplasmosis in patients in whom the date of onset of lymphadenopathy matches the window of acute infection predicted by serological tests performed at a reference laboratory. In the aftermath of the Dutch Q fever outbreak, an increasing number of patients are being diagnosed with chronic Q fever. Most of these patients are unaware of being infected with Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever. BACKGROUND/AIMS: Liver involvement in sickle cell disease may take place due to the primary disease itself or to secondary conditions such as iron overload, viral hepatitis and cholelithiasis. In the present study we have tried to evaluate the frequency of hepatic dysfunction and etiological factors in 48 patients with sickle cell disease.
METHODS: Clinical and laboratory investigation including liver function tests, serological tests for viral hepatitis, and abdominal ultrasonography were performed in all of the patients. Additionally, liver biopsies were taken from 13 patients.

A patient with multiple sclerosis presented with seronegative C. burnetii endocarditis diagnosed using C. burnetii-specific polymerase chain reaction and fluorescence in situ hybridization on cardiovascular biopsy. This case supports the necessity of a systematic polymerase chain reaction testing of removed cardiac valves because blood culture-negative endocarditis can be pauci-symptomatic, and serological tests can be negative in cases of immunosuppression.

A 47-year-old male was admitted because of persistent jaundice. Akiyami C disease was diagnosed by serological tests using the microscopic agglutination tests. The source was considered to be a water contaminated with leptospiras which he had drunk while working at a civil engineering job. The reported cases of Akiyami C disease have recently decreased and this is the 6th case reported in the last 15 years.

Cultural and serological tests for Chlamydia trachomatis infection were performed in 213 patients at Düsseldorf University Gynecological Clinic Düsseldorf. 16 of these patients were tissue culture positive. Titers of antibodies greater than 1:100 were found in 37 patients with the ELISA. In tumorpatients the incidence of acute infection is not different from others, however antibodies were found in 35% of all tumorsera tested.

A total of 965 cultures of streptococci received at a reference unit for identification were examined with API-20 Strep kits and also by established methods. The API method, although it needed to be supplemented with additional tests, largely overcame the difficulty that pyogenic streptococci are usually identified by their serological reactions and that biochemical tests are used for the identification of the other streptococci. Serological tests are routinely used to detect Toxoplasma gondii specific IgG antibodies in serum. Serological surveys of T. gondii show a medium to high prevalence in Danish indoor sows at the time of slaughter. BACKGROUND: Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is a life-threatening infection affecting rural populations in sub-Saharan Africa. Large-scale population screening by antibody detection with the Card Agglutination Test for Trypanosomiasis (CATT)/Trypanosoma brucei (T b) gambiense helped reduce the number of reported cases of gambiense HAT to fewer than 10 000 in 2011. Because low case numbers lead to decreased cost-effectiveness of such active screening, we aimed to assess diagnostic accuracy of a rapid serodiagnostic test (HAT Sero-K-SeT) applicable in primary health-care centres.
