Child feeding and care behaviors are associated with xerophthalmia in rural Nepalese households.

The study examined caregiver-child interactions, intrahousehold food allocation and general child care behaviors and their effect on children's xerophthalmia status in the rural Terai region of Nepal. Seventy-eight households with a child having a history of xerophthalmia (cases) were matched with 78 households with a child of the same age having no history of xerophthalmia (controls). Seven day-long continuous monitoring observations were performed in each household (over 15 months) by trained Nepali observers, focusing on feeding and care of a focus child and his/her younger sibling. Ninetee

The impact of facial vitiligo on social appearance anxiety: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo, particularly when involving the face, is associated not only with visible disfigurement but also with profound psychosocial consequences. Despite growing interest in the psychosomatic dimensions of skin diseases, the relationship between facial vitiligo and social appearance anxiety remains underexplored. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the level of social appearance anxiety in patients with facial vitiligo and to compare it with healthy controls. Further, to examine how this anxiety correlates with broader psychological and quality-of-life parameters. In addition, we conducted

The effects of digitalisation on health and social care work: a qualitative descriptive study of the perceptions of professionals and managers.

BACKGROUND: Today, digitalisation is strongly present in health and social care, and it increasingly affects the organisation of work, work requirements, tasks and tools. Due to the constant change in work, up-to-date knowledge is needed about these micro-level effects of digitalisation and how professionals experience the effects in their work. Furthermore, even though managers play a key role in implementing new digital services, their perceptions of the effects of digitalisation and whether they match the views of professionals remain unknown. This study examined how health and social care

Abnormal functional connectivity of the reward network is associated with social communication impairments in autism spectrum disorder: A large-scale multi-site resting-state fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: The social motivation hypothesis proposes that the social deficits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are related to reward system dysfunction. However, functional connectivity (FC) patterns of the reward network in ASD have not been systematically explored yet. METHODS: The reward network was defined as eight regions of interest (ROIs) per hemisphere, including the nucleus accumbens (NAc), caudate, putamen, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), amygdala, and insula. We computed both the ROI-wise resting-state FC and se

Cannabidivarin Treatment Ameliorates Autism-Like Behaviors and Restores Hippocampal Endocannabinoid System and Glia Alterations Induced by Prenatal Valproic Acid Exposure in Rats.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition whose primary features include social communication and interaction impairments with restricted or repetitive motor movements. No approved treatment for the core symptoms is available and considerable research efforts aim at identifying effective therapeutic strategies. Emerging evidence suggests that altered endocannabinoid signaling and immune dysfunction might contribute to ASD pathogenesis. In this scenario, phytocannabinoids could hold great pharmacological potential due to their combined capacities to act either directly or indi

Identifying the social and environmental determinants of plague endemicity in Peru: insights from a case study in Ascope, La Libertad.

BACKGROUND: Plague remains a public health problem in specific areas located in Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador and Peru. Its prevention and control encompasses adequate clinical management and timely laboratory diagnosis. However, understanding communities' interaction with its surrounding ecosystem as well as the differences between community members and institutional stakeholders regarding the root causes of plague might contribute to understand its endemicity. We aim at bridging the traditionally separate biological and social sciences by elucidating communities' risk perception and identifying k

Race Attribution Modifies the Association Between Daily Discrimination and Major Depressive Disorder Among Blacks: the Role of Gender and Ethnicity.

OBJECTIVE: Although the association between discrimination and depression among Blacks is well-known, we do not know if this effect is influenced by race attribution. In this current study, we investigated the effect modification of race attribution on the association between everyday discrimination and major depressive disorder (MDD) among Blacks in the United States, and whether this effect modification is influenced by the intersection of ethnicity and gender. METHODS: With a cross-sectional design, this study used data from the National Survey of American Life (NSAL), 2001-2003. The study

Parental support moderates the interaction of COMT and BDNF genotypes with early life adversity on problem gambling severity index scores among young adults.

The development of gambling-related harm and gambling disorder involves several genetic and environmental factors. However, how these factors interact to influence the development and whether such interactions confer to diathesis-stress or differential susceptibility models remains largely unexplored. To address this gap, data from the Survey of Adolescent Life in Västmanland (SALVe cohort) were utilized, Participants provided a saliva sample for genotyping, completed early life adversity (ELA) and Parents as Social Construct (PASCQ) surveys at age 17, and the Problem Gambling Severity Index (

'I am treated well if I adhere to my HIV medication': putting patient-provider interactions in context through insights from qualitative research in five sub-Saharan African countries.

OBJECTIVES: The nature of patient-provider interactions and communication is widely documented to significantly impact on patient experiences, treatment adherence and health outcomes. Yet little is known about the broader contextual factors and dynamics that shape patient-provider interactions in high HIV prevalence and limited-resource settings. Drawing on qualitative research from five sub-Saharan African countries, we seek to unpack local dynamics that serve to hinder or facilitate productive patient-provider interactions. METHODS: This qualitative study, conducted in Kisumu (Kenya), Kises

Look2React: Making VR NPCs Come Alive with Dynamic Vision-Guided Reactions.

A central promise of virtual reality (VR) games is the increased control players have over their character through pose and body language. However, many non-player character (NPC) systems fail to respond convincingly to these poses, user intent, and situational context, limiting immersion. We present Look2React, an interaction system that captures what NPCs see, using a vision-based reasoning model to select pose and text responses. Look2React endows NPCs with the ability to react dynamically and appropriately to player interactions. Through a gaze and proximity-based detection system inspired

Exposomics as a tool to investigate differences in health and disease by sex and gender.

The health and disease of an individual is mediated by their genetics, a lifetime of environmental exposures, and interactions between the two. Genetic or biological sex, including chromosome composition and hormone expression, may influence both the types and frequency of environmental exposures an individual experiences, as well as the biological responses an individual has to those exposures. Gender identity, which can be associated with social behaviors such as expressions of self, may also mediate the types and frequency of exposures an individual experiences. Recent advances in exposome-

Altered activation in the action observation system during synchronization in high loneliness individuals.

Lonely people tend to evaluate social exchanges negatively and to display difficulties in interactions. Interpersonal synchronization is crucial for achieving positive interactions, promoting affinity, closeness, and satisfaction. However, little is known about lonely individuals' ability to synchronize and about their brain activity while synchronizing. Following the screening of 303 participants, we recruited 32 low and 32 high loneliness participants. They were scanned while engaged in movement synchronization, using a novel dyadic interaction paradigm. Results showed that high loneliness i

Prevalence of dental caries and associated factors in children from a quilombola territory: an intersectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Quilombolas are ethnic-racial groups with black ancestry and territorial ties to quilombo remnants. In 2023, the IBGE identified 494 Quilombola Territories in Brazil, housing about 1.3 million people (0.65% of the population). Historically marginalized, especially in health rights, Social Markers of Difference, such as race, class, and sex, impact the quality of life of Quilombolas. Social determinants like income and education contribute to health inequalities, particularly in oral health. Intersectionality helps analyze how different social markers interact. The Rajarata Pregnancy Cohort (RaPCo): study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Ending preventable maternal deaths remains a global priority and in the later stages of obstetric transition, identifying the social determinants of maternal health outcomes is essential to address stagnating maternal mortality rates. Countries would hardly achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SGD) targets on maternal health, unless the complex and context-specific socio-economic aetiologies associated with maternal mental health and suicide are identified. The Rajarata Pregnancy Cohort (RaPCo) is a prospective cohort study, designed to explore the interactions between social
